OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: MBP Slow Start Up - Takes More Time To Work At Regular Speed
May 8, 2012I have had my mac for a little of year, a few days ago I downloaded a few things. Since then it takes it about 10-15 minutes to start up, even after it starts up it takes a few more minutes for things to work at a regular speed. I have cleared firefox cache and reset the Pram.

I remember I was able to boot Windows XP in 17 second before on my Pentium 4 many years ago. I would like to improve my boot time, is there anyway to do it?
OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Slow Boot Time (10 To 15 Minutes)
May 21, 2012My iMac 2.66 running 10.6.8 runs fine. But when I restart or boot up from shutdown, it takes a good 10 - 15 minutes of blank gray screen to reach the gray apple. Once there, it goes quickly to the login screen and all is well again.
Having searched these discussions, I've tried the following with no success:
- Safe Boot
- Deleted from Login Items
- Zapped the PRAM (possible clue: I can only do it once; when I continue to hold down the keys for an additional 2 minutes or so, nothing more happens after that first Zap. PRAM battery problem?)

OS X :: Snow Leopard Download Speed Too Slow?
Jan 3, 2010Ok so i am using a macbook running snow leopard and up until recently my internet has been fast. download speeds at about 360 kb/s. Then this morning my download speed plummeted to about 15 kb/s. I have tried everything to fix this and have found no solution. The problem is in both firefox and safari. I am using wireless network for internet.

Sep 5, 2010I need your help diagnosing this early 2007 Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It isn't mine, rather my sister's, so I don't know the full details of everything as I don't see her all the time. Last December, I swapped in my 160gb 5400RPM SATA drive from my late 2006 MBP into her MBP as I had just bought and installed a 500gb 7200RPM drive into my MBP. I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard onto her machine, patched it up, and sent her on her way.
A few weeks ago, she came to me saying she was having trouble booting into OS X and was just having trouble using her laptop in general. The hard drive wasn't making any erratic noises, so I figured the system install had corrupted itself. The problem was I wasn't able to boot to the Snow Leopard DVD. The DVD would show up at boot when holding down the Option key to show boot devices, but when clicked, it would show the Apple logo, then the "prohibitory" symbol and the fans would spin up on full blast, with no further progress.
Booting into Single User mode, I was able to run disk repair and after running it over a few times, I was told the drive was without errors, the laptop booted fine (minus the booting to Snow Leopard DVD) and I gave the MBP back to her.
Fast forward to today, she's having issues booting in to OS X again. It'll show the Apple boot logo, but the small spinning circle will freeze, and the whole laptop will come to a halt. I still can't boot to the DVD either, with the same symptoms as above. I'm sure I can boot into Single User mode, run Disk Repair, and probably be good, but I want to attack this issue at the source.
Is the hard drive I've got in her MBP going bad (I can't hear any of the erratic noises you hear when you know a drive is going bad)? What else could it be? What about the inability to boot to the Snow Leopard DVD? What is the problem and how can I fix it? Thanks, and sorry for the long winded post.

May 14, 2012I want to reformat my hdd and split it on few partitions but i get following problems
- Disk utility doesn't allow to split it, i check it in single user mode, nothing works
- Doesn't want to boot, I tried to boot it from external hdd, usb, cd, dvd, nothing works, I just see Grey apple and that's it,nothing happends
I left it even like that for whole night and nothing happened..I did scan disk, check blocks etc. no errors :/ it give me some filesystem error (which i googled and it sayd you need to boot from different partition so it will work) c, cmd r, doesnt work..starting with opt key gives me list of devices but it freezes after My macbook pro is from mid 2010, 8 gb of ram (i did change it by myself, but works perfectly)The os snow leopard works perfectly, but I need to split the partition..Tried to reinstall os but it stops after restart (in middle of instalation) , it gives me grey apple and thats it.I don't have original dvd, lost it some time ago, can't get new one since I moved to middle of nowhere(no apple shops or anything)single user mode commands would be most helpful, id just format the hdd and split/reinstall the os from zero..Is there any chance to reformat/partition hdd from single user mode? or any software that I can boot from ?

Aug 31, 2009Strange as it may seem, when I installed Snow Leopard, I immediately freed almost 40 gig on my Macbook pro (can't imagine why) and speed was increased by a factor of 2-3 times. One more thing is that parallels is now "almost" as fast as a native program, especially with Quicken for windows, which is the only reason that I use parallels.

Oct 16, 2009When both Mac OS X 10.6 and Windows 7 were tested on a MacBook Pro, Apple's new operating system clearly beat Microsoft in terms of speed, a new test has shown.
Both operating systems were tested on a 2008 MacBook Pro machine by CNet, and each was given its own, separate, clean hard drive. The 64-bit version of each OS was included in the test, which measured a variety of speed and performance related tasks. Snow Leopard was given true, full 64-bit support with most of its native applications taking full advantage of modern processors.
Each OS had the same software installed: iTunes 9, QuickTime, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Cinebench R10. In the test, Snow Leopard booted and shut down significantly faster than Windows 7.
"In time-based tests, Snow Leopard consistently outdid Windows 7," the study found. "It took only 36.4 seconds to boot up, while Windows took 42.7 seconds. In a shutdown test, Snow Leopard took only 6.6 seconds, while Windows needed twice the amount of time: 12.6 seconds. Both computers, however, took just about 1 second to return from sleeping. For this reason, I didn't actually test the wake-up time as it was too short in both operating systems to produce meaningful numbers or even allow me to measure the difference."
The Mac software also unsurprisingly ran Apple's own native applications more efficiently. Converting a movie from M4 format to iPod in Quicktime X on Snow Leopard took 444.3 seconds, while Windows 7, with QuickTime 7 (the latest version available) took 723 seconds. Similarly, converting 17 songs in iTunes from MP3 to AAC took 149.9 seconds in Snow Leopard, while Windows 7 required 162 seconds.
The test also found that Mac OS X 10.6 had better battery life on the MacBook Pro than Windows 7. The 2008 model has a removable battery. But author Dong Ngo said he believes Boot Camp drivers were mostly responsible for the Windows 7 battery life, as many PC laptops fared much better than the 77 minutes the Microsoft OS fared.
One area where Windows 7 was able to easily trump Snow Leopard was in graphics performance. The system's 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card helped the system score much better in the latest version of Windows, earning a 5,777 3D rendering score in Cinebench R10. Snow Leopard scored 5,437.
In testing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Windows 7 again came out on top, with an average 26.3 frames per second performance, compared to 21.2 frames per second within Snow Leopard.
Ngo's conclusion: Unless you are a gamer, get a Mac.
"If you can get by with just software designed by Apple and if money is not a big issue, you will be happy with a Mac," he said. "Examples of these software choices are iTunes, iLife, QuickTime, Safari, iChat, and so on (and you probably won't need much more than those for daily entertainment and communication needs). Finally, if money is not an issue--and it definitely is for most of us--you should get a Mac anyway. It's the only platform, for now, that can run both Windows and OS X."

Aug 28, 2009I was planning to get Snowey and a SSD at the same time, but the latter had to wait. So far, I�m seeing at least a ten seconds improvement in boot time with Snow Leopard:
17" Macbook pro unibody 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB ram 7200rpm HD
before SL: boot up from 39 to 55 seconds
after SL: boot up time from 30 to 39 seconds
Ok, so there is no interest in this topic.
For me boot time is a rather important criterium.
And I think the fact that SL reduce this with almost 10 seconds is AMAZING.
OS X :: MacBook Won't Boot After Installing Snow Leopard
Aug 28, 2009It just hangs at the spinning pinwheel. I shut the machine off and booted it into Verbose-mode (Command-V) and it stops at "Initializing Power Manager" or something very early on. I pulled the battery and unplugged the machine, am letting it cool off (not that there's a point) -- it's one of the original MacBooks that had that "shutoff" problem with the wire that'd melt and short to the heatsink but mine never had the issue because I wasn't using it very often at the time. Any ideas? The drive does show up when I hold down Option.

Now that Snow Leopard had been out for quite sometime and many issues solved; I thought of installing it instead of Leopard. All I did was follow the instructions to install Snow Leopard [the only option with Snow Leopard was that it did an "Archive and Install" kind of thing by default]. It did take a lot of time [1 hour?] and I was finally taken to my desktop. I looked to check if everything was okay. Though there was nothing spectacular about Snow Leopard. I shut the computer down. Today morning I get this and I can't boot.

May 17, 2012After dropping my macbook I had a black screen with just a cursor that would move though could not perform any actions. After reseting pram and smc, i now get to the screen with the stars and what looks like the aurora borealis or whatever. when i insert my DVD into my ROM, i doesn't boot from it, and it ejects automatically, i can boot other OS, Like WIndows or Linux, if i take to service somewhere it costs alot, the boot page (White page, by holding "Alt Option Key") doesn't recognize the DVD, and it does other OS DVDs.

I can`t: boot the Mac OS X install DVD and Snow Leopard , enter single-user mod (freeze), enter verbose mod (freeze), enter safe mod (only the apple appear and nothing happen) and whatever you can think off.I tried to reset using comand + option + o + r and ANYTHING you can think off. It just open with a flashing folder with a question mark on it. Btw i format the hard drive on my windows ( in hfs+ of course).

I want to put Snow Leopard on one of the partitions, because I still need to use Rosetta from time to time. The computer didn't come with any installer disks... "no problem," I thought, because I own a Snow Leopard installer DVD (which says "Version 10.6" on it).Â
But it won't boot from that DVD.  The Apple logo stayed on the screen for seven minutes before I gave up.Â
Is that because this computer requires a later version of Snow Leopard?Â
What are my options for getting Snow Leopard onto this thing?Â

Feb 2, 2010I have a MacBook 13" 2.0 GHz with 1 GB Ram and a 80GB harddrive 2006 model. This machine recognizes all ram, DVD, Hard Drive and ng usb etc. seems to work perfectly. BUT, it will only startup if I HOLD the PowerButton down all the way down until I see the the Apple Logo. If I just hit the powerbutton and go, it will t reboot over and over and over. I have bought new ram, nope. I tried a different HD, nope. I disconnected the DVD, nope. It simply won't boot properly. Once I HOLD down the power button to get it running it works fine, sees the camera, BT, WIFI, clock is at right time, all keys on KB work, and usb peripherials. I cannot reset the pram or vram at all, even while holding the power button down to boot. If I just hit the button and quickly press Command option p r it just reboots like always. Does anyone have any ideas??? I'm at a loss as it works fine once booted. While holding the power button to boot it I see my front led flashing and then hear the several beeps and it starts up just fine.
I have pulled the battery, removed the PSU, held the power button for a whole minute battery or power and let it sit overnight like this but nada, still does this.

May 24, 2012My hard drive recently crashed. I just bought a new one and installed it myself. Now it's simply a matter of reinstalling the operating system, which is where I'm having trouble. I insert the Snow Leopard Install DVD into the drive. I power on the computer and hold 'C' (I've tried Option too) to boot from the disc, but it doesn't work. It spits out the disc after a few seconds, whether I hold 'C' or not, and then it gives me a folder icon with a question mark in it in the center of the screen, the same thing it showed when my hard drive first crashed.

Aug 2, 2009I was just about to order Snow Leopard, but then it hit me. Could it screw up rEFIt and my triple booting-ness? I asked my friend who is also using rEFIt and they think it could mess things up. What's your opinion, will it do no harm, or will it? And if it does, should I still get Snow Leopard? It was a bit of a pain installing everything, and I've just finished installing 80GB of games onto my Windows partition, so obviously I don't want that getting wiped or unable to boot!

Mar 26, 2012I bought a Mac OSX 10.6.3 Snow Leopard CD (Family Pack) to upgrade on my Macbook Pro, but it won't boot. There are sound like it was running but it reject in the end. My Macbook Pro is Intel Core Duo 2GHz with 2GB Ram. It is currently running OSX 10.5.8. I tried the disc on other Macbook running 10.6.6 purchased 2-3 years ago and it work. So I don't really know what happen with mine. My DVD drive work fine though.
