IMac :: Right Memory With Correct Speed?
Mar 15, 2009
My iMac is from 2008, the first 3.06GHz version one (with Nvidia 8800 gfx card etc). When I got this one, I read somewhere that this was the first iMac to get the bus speed 1066MHz. When I look under information, it confirms this: "Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz". I instantly upgraded the memory to 4 GB from a local computer shop back then. When I look in the information, under memory I have: "Type: "Speed: 800 MHz"". Do I have too slow memory for the computer? I mean it runs fine and everything but I'm just wondering if I could potentially have faster memory in this computer. Would it make a big difference if this was the case? When looking in computer stores I can't really find memory that has the label SO-DIMM DDR2 - 1066MHz, so maybe I have the right one?

Can all versions of the iBook G4 12" use PC2700 RAM? Even the 800GHz and 1.0 GHz models? I know you're supposed to use PC2100 in them, but the PC2700 is so much less expensive than the PC2100 right now.

I just bought a new MacPro - Quad-Core Nehelem 2.8 GHz. Before booting the first time I installed four Kingston 8Gb DDR3 ECC DIMMS, 1066 MHz (registered, with thermal sensor). It shows 32Gb memory installed, but lists their speed as 800 MHz. I assume this is a sign of a memory problem, but I'm wondering if there's some hardware or OS issue I'm missing.

I am interested in adding a webcam to my desktop Imac (power pc)- Isight is no longer available- an option that I found is the Ecamm Image- but apparently it is USB and not firewire and it will only run with high speed usb- how do I know which type is on my computer? I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?

What do you guys think?I am also curious as to the clock speed of the new upcoming processors. Online it says the fastest one they have is 3.2 GHZ, so will the speed increase come from DDR3 memory and no frontside bus?Does anyone know the actual technical differences between the current processors and the upcoming, other than the memory and frontside bus?

I have got the 2.4ghz aluminium macbook, and I upgraded the ram to 4GB about a 2 months back. I have always felt that my macbook is slower now than before the upgrade(which is strange), but recently the situation became worst. My macbook would randomly heats up very quickly, iStats pro would show me that i only have 1-10MB of free memory, my fan would be running on 6200rpm. response rate would be much slower, and circle of rainbow also occurs much more often.I get panic whenever this happens(i have only got my macbook for 5-months), so when that happens i usually try to quit those application that i am not using like mail, safari, iwork 09 and etc. It didn't really help much(or maybe not at all) until at some point(around about 30-45mins) the systems automatically cools down, reduce fan speed and etc but similar problem would happen again in 30mins.

I'd like to confirm that the two links below are the proper cables for installing a SSD in the new iMacs. Symbology confirmed for the power cable for me already, can anyone else who has installed an SSD confirm the other? If not, can you post a link from Amazon of the correct one? I have a problem but it's not mine it's my girlfriends. My girlfriend cannot seem to type correct words on her keyboard, due to water exposure. Now whenever she wants to type something it won't let her. We tried different methods; unplugging computer power cord, keyboard, and replug everything back in after 15-20 seconds. No luck. I also had her try to do the pram reset, didn't work as well. I suggest that she re-install osx with the disc or with the new snow leopard disc, to do a clean installation of the snow leopard but we haven't tried that yet.

I don't know what the deal is. I'm trying to install 2 sticks of 2GB into my 7,1 iMac, and the screw just won't turn. I'm using a standard Phillips head, and nothin' doin'. The screw is now starting to strip, so I guess I'm going to have to take this into the friggin' Apple Store just to have them open the thing.

I got a iMac on wednesday, everything's been great. Until now. It's been on all day (the problem maybe?) and it now sounds like a fan is catching? I put the fan speeds up to 2000 with smcFancontrol but after 20 secs it goes back down to 1500?

I remember reading that the iMac DVD drives are set not to exceed a certain speed so that they remain quiet, but I would rather the occasional disc burns take less time than be silent and keep me waiting. Is there any way to speed this up?

I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.5.8. Yesterday when I brought the machine out of sleep, the CPU fan began running full blast. iStat Pro clocked it at 3890 rpm. (Normally it runs about 1200 rpm.) All other readings, include the CPU temperature, were normal.
After searching some other Mac forums, I cleaned dust from the air vent and then unplugged the machine completely for about 30 minutes. When I restarted, the CPU fan was at its normal speed, and I used the machine for the rest of the evening without incident.
But when I started up the iMac this morning, the fan immediately went back to 3800+ rpm. Again, all other fans and temperature readings were normal. Again I unplugged the machine completely for several minutes, and on the restart the fan was normal. But I don't know for how long.

Curious as I want to match the speed and pre-order another 4gb of ram (2x2gb) and didn't know what speed they went with?
I assume its as easy as the old iMac's as far as a screw underneath the screen and snap them in?
Also just curious about if their was a brand name on the memory they used - not that it matters just curious?
I ordered base 4gb ram and I am guessing its 2x2gb and I here it has 4 slots so I will buy another 2x2.

I just bought a iMac 27" i5 version with the 2-TB Hitachi HDD.
Under browsing:
Fan-speeds:
ODD: 998 rpm
HDD: Always 1100 or above
CPU: 939
Temperatures:
ODD: 46C
HDD: 57C
CPU: 43C
The only thing what bothering me is the loud HDD fan. Really annoying.
So, what for iMac have you and what are the fan-speeds and temperatures of your iMac? And of-course how did you solve these high fan-speeds? (If you did)

in my system profiler under firewire it says : -
FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed:Up to 400 Mb/sec
Does this mean that an external hard drive with firewire 800 will be no good to me? Or does mean that the last firewire device was only capable of 400 mb/sec?

I downloaded and installed Temperature Monitor and iMac Fan Control - mainly for observational purposes and not for toying around with the fan speeds and I've got some questions. Mind you, I haven't tampered at all with the fan speed settings, just installed Fan Control. Here are my readings (while browsing the internet with Safari and doing a chat via iChat):
Fan Speeds:
CPU fan (desired) 1300 RPM / (current) 1530 RPM
HD fan (desired) 2100 RPM / (current) 2099 RPM
DVD fan (desired) 1300 / 1298 RPM
Temperatures:
CPU Heatsink: 92F
Internal HD: 108F
Internal DVD: 95F
GPU Heatsink: 107F
Are these, under the circumstances, normal readings?

The iMac G3 is a 2002 model, has a 600 mghz processor and 1 GB RAM. It does not have an AirPort wireless card and Apple no longer manufacturers an AirPort card for this machine (which I bought used), so I bought a USB wireless adapter that appears to pick up a pretty strong signal from my Verizon FiOS router, strongest of course when parked next to the router. Unfortunately, I am only able to generate 3.5-4.2 mbps download speed no matter how close I am to the router, whereas the machine can consistently download at 12-15 mbps with a direct ethernet connection. The FiOS router can download at speeds in excess of 20 mbps. Is there some setting I'm overlooking that can improve the wireless connection speed or am I going to have to settle for wired use only?

I am a new Mac user. I bought a 27" iMac today to replace a dead PC. My download speeds are AWFUL on the Mac. While using the PC, my maximum download speed on a 6 mbit connection was over 850kb/sec. Now, with the mac, I can barely manage 250K/sec downloads. I am using all the same equipment and cables as before (not using the wireless, and I have it disabled), and if I plug in another PC into my router, it will get the 850+kb/sec download speeds, no problem at all. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to get things working properly? Poor speeds occur no matter what program I am downloading from, whether it be Safari, FTP, or whatever. I just installed parallels, with windows, and I can download at my old speeds. How do I do it in native Mac mode then?

I just installed windows 7 via Boot Camp, and then installed the game Left 4 Dead 2 on it and started to play the game, and everything was going well until about 20 minutes of playing it.
The game soon started/continued to slow down, or have that lag effect, however, let me note, I'm playing this offline "single player mode" just to make sure it had nothing to do with my internet. Also let me note, nothing else is running on the computer at the time, no updates, nothing.
So then I touched the top of the monitor, and it was extremely extremely hot, and of course since I'm playing a game the GPU will produce more heat, but the only thing I could think of is, the GPU is becoming too hot and effecting my game play. I know most say Apple is very smart and heat should not have an issue, but what else would cause this as everything else on my iMac works fine, and when I close out the game, everything works alright. Videos play fine etc..
I haven't heard anyone else have this problem so I wanted to ask you guys who are experts here to tell me what you think it is?
