Does anybody know how to get the MacBook Pro to recognize and mount data and program CDs when it is refusing to mount them? The CD player just ejects them before it even recognizes them.
View 9 RepliesWe have two Mac laptops: a PowerBook (running OS 10.5 Tiger) and an iBook (running OS 10.4). In a very unfortunate accident the screen literally broke off of the iBook. (A little kid flattened the screen out, and just broke it off). The computer itself seems to be OK, but nothing shows on the screen of course (cables twisted out, torn, etc.)
My main questions are: I had a few very important documents, that I need to get from that laptop as soon as possible. Is there any way to connect the two laptops and access the broken computer's hard-disk that way? If yes, how would I do that? The broken computer starts up, seems to be working fine otherwise. I do have a firewire cable, could I use that one? How do I make the connection, meaning software-setup?
Secondly, the iBook was just over a year old. Is it worth getting it fixed? The screen itself is not broken as far as I can tell, but it literally broke off of the main body, and some cables seem torn. Otherwise this laptop was in perfect shape before, rarely used.
Long story short I dropped my 500GB Maxtor external HD (which is really just an internal HD in a chase). The drop was about 3 ft. It was not on so I don't think there will be much damage to the disk, but it no longer mounts. I was wondering if anyone could think of a way to get the disk to mount so I can recover files saved to it. I have Tech Tools, and Data Rescue II to recover the drive but as long it is not being recognized by the computer those applications are useless.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a white screen of death and I have tried to alt, cmd, p, r and unplug peripherals and the IMac and plug them back in etc. I did get it to boot from disc and was trying to create an image of my system but it can not copy it it has an input/output error. I tried to click on burn and the hard drive is not available. It is not mounted and will not mount. It will not verify or repair either. Is there a way to copy any of my data off the hard drive to an external drive?

Recently, I was hired by a client to recover the data on a new macbook pro. They said one day the computer just wouldn't start, so they brought it to the Apple store, where they switched out the hard drive. They got to keep the old drive, which I attempted to recover using VirtualLab and R-Studio data recovery programs and a USB hard drive case. Both programs did the same thing: they scanned, and kept finding errors and never even got through 1% of the disk! R-Studio even scanned for almost 24 hours and nothing came up from the partition we needed to recover! Disk utility was the first thing I tried, and it appeared to have scanned the entire drive (this was about 3 weeks prior to trying the other programs)and found a lot of errors, but was not able to recover or repair the drive.
Also, the hard drive kept making a pulsating, repeating sound while it was being scanned that sounded like it was trying to read the disk, almost a scraping sound but not quite. The drive did spin up and was recognized by the recovery programs, but it did not mount in OS X.
I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem, or knows of a better program and/or a good, trustworthy advanced data recovery service she can hire to recover her important data.
I have a dead La Cie Big disk terabyte external drive. It won't mount and it isn't recoverable the way it is. So I looked inside, it's 2 x 500 gig Seagate drives. So, I took the 2 drives out and installed one of them in a Mac Pro to see if it would mount on it's own. I figured probably not, since there were two drives mounted in this La Cie external case, they must have been RAID-ed together. I don't really know much about RAID, obviously.
Disk utility saw the disk, but it wouldn't mount and gave the unreadable message. Tried to disk utility it, and it gave file system errors, not surprised. It looks like you can't separate them, the RAID must split the files onto the two disks.
Is there any point to trying the utility Data Recovery on it? Or should I just tell my boss the only way to get the data back is to send it out to a data recovery place? I don't want to try and reformat them if there is still any possible way to get the data off them. I think the drives are fine and would work as a terabyte drive in the Fantom case if reformatted, but then we lose all these important projects.We seem to have the worst luck with external hard drives.
The odd thing is that I have another dead terabyte drive, a Fantom drive in which one of the 500 gig drives started clicking. I took both 500 gig WD drives out of the Fantom case and installed the two Seagate 500s from the dead La Cie case. It shows up in Disk Utility as an unformatted 1T drive. I was hoping it might just reconstitute itself in another case, but no go. If worse comes to worse, I will reformat it and it will probably be useable.
I'm looking for a FREE data recovery app for os x to recover data from a NTFS hard drive. The hard has lost it's volume and will not mount and I've tried some other programs and I can see the files but I can't get them off because every program I've tried isn't free and won't let me copy them off. I've tried looking for one but I can't seem to find a good one. I just want to copy off the files and then I'll wipe the drive and fix the parition.

View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I have now lost all my data, photos, files, music etc. NO backups, only simply because i did not know how to do them. Is there any way of getting the files back? i have just started my phd and am looking for a portable laptop. my requirements are pretty basic - lots of word processing, music, movies, and of course internet. maybe some photo editing. now first, i am a little mixed up if i should go for the macbook pro (basic 13 inch) or the newly launched macbook air (13 inch basic). pro is more powerful and cheaper than air. but then air is lighter and also has the faster flash memory! on the other hand, i am tempted to go for an SSD option with the pro. the price goes up of course by 315 $ or so. but in a way then the system could last me for a very long time given that the new polymer batteries last 3 times than normal ones. and its really the batteries/HDD that get worn out first.
on the other hand i am a little wary of SSD technology. it seems that the old HDD's are not that bad, and have some advantages over the SSD's. an internet search reveals that the 1st generation SSD's had a lot of problems. so does apple now use 1st generation ones or newer ones? moreover, is the SSD option more reliable or the flash drive one (with air)? basically am ready to invest a big amount provided i am assured that the system will last me for a long time to come.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro that is approximately 2 years old. It has always worked fine without any issues at all. Tonight I was installing some scanner software for a Fujitsu S300M scanner. After installing the software it asked me to reboot so I had reboot. At that time I came back a minute later to see just a black screen. I then after a couple more minutes decided to hold down the power button and turn off the power since nothing was happening.
I then pressed the button again and I saw the light turn on on the button that opens the screen but that is all. There was no startup chime, nothing. All I could hear is at the same time the light came on the optical drive makes it's noise that it makes at bootup. I have tried repeatly to start the computer. I have pulled both the AC Power and Battery for several minutes with still no luck. As I said just the light comes on and the optical drive makes noise and that's it, no startup chime, nothing. I don't think this should be related to scanner software and I'm assuming it was a coincidence that it happened then but any idea what could be causing this and can I fix it without a trip to the genius bar?
I have an aging mac. (macbook pro 15.4" core duo (2006)) I would like ot breath life into the machine by upgrading the ram. I am thinking of upgrading to 2 gigs from 1. What kind of a performance upgrade am I going to see?

First, when charging my Mac at night in off-mode, it will occasionally turn itself on at some point evidenced by the power-on when it's opened. Then,I have had one instance of a shut-down by itself during use. It restarted w/ no problem. Next, the computer turned itself on with the cover closed and the computer had been off all night. I heard it start up, so I am sure. I do have AppleCare if I need to take it in.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook that was given the ol beer in the keyboard treatment and went dark with a ghost image, before I bought it, leading me to believe that it was the inverter board had blown, I bought one online and replaced it but to no avail. The previous owner obviously had very little knowledge as they left a few screws out on reassembly but I don't think they should matter a lot. I could of course use it with an external monitor but kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop. So would like to get the display working without having to buy a new display. I cannot seem to find out if it is possible to replace the backlight, if this is the problem, or to find one for sale online, even on the excellent ifixit site. It is a 2Ghz intel core 2 duo.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel based Macbook pro. I have an old Thinkpad T20 with XP Pro acting as a print server. My printer is an HP PSC 1350. I also have another laptop with XP on it. My wife uses her PC laptop and I'm using the Mac. She can print wirelessly to the PSC1350 no problem. I have downloaded and installed the hpjis, Foomatic-RIP, and Ghostscript in order to get the driver for the HP printer. The 1350 isn't on the list, but the 1300 and the 1400 is so probably close enough. I can see my printer on the network from the MacBook and I load it, etc...
When I go to print, the file goes into the queue, the printer fires up, prepares to take the paper, and then stops. Going to the XP laptop acting as the server - the file is shown in the queue and says Printing, but it's stopped. I have to manually remove the file from the queue from the spool directory to clear it. Has anyone ever been able to get the HP PSC 1350 to print from a MacBook through an XP server?
One that no one would be able to get in at all? I've read where someone could use the install disc and set a new password. There's no way at all to make my computer totally safe from someone getting into it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a small problem with a MacBook. With OSX 10.5.6. I ran BootCamp on it to create a second partition for Windows XP SP3. When it's time to put in the Windows XP disc on the reboot, the MacBook gets stuck with a black screen and a flashing indicator in the top left corner. Supposely it must show a message that the CD is about to boot for the windows installation. But that flashing indicator just stayes there. Nothing happens.
I tried recreating the partition using bootcamp about 3 times, I made sure that the partition was working as I could see it on the OSX desktop. Tried about 4 different Windows CD's, vista included, but nothing changes.
I am now about to reinstall the Mac OS to see if that will help. I am stuck with this as I never had a problem like this and tried everything I could think of except for the reinstalling of OS X.
My daughter has a 3 year old 13" MacBook. We are upgrading the HD and would like to get an exterior enclosure for the old HD from this laptop. Would any 2.5" SATA enclosure work for this or are there other specifications I should be aware of?

Problem is, since the battery packed up, the computer itself is running slower than when the battery was installed. Is this usual?
It's a dualcore processor, and was previously fast enough to watch HD movies, but now HD movies are jerky, and the whole overall operating system seems noticeably more sluggish.
I'm going to be testing a 1.83 GHz Macbook with a bad hard drive and optical drive offered for sale. How can I boot from a USB flashdisk? I have a retail version of OS 10.4 on a DVD, but obviously I can't use it on this machine because of the bad DVD drive. I can, however, copy the contents of the DVD to a USB flashdisk using another Mac.

I would LOVE to pair a decent Bluetooth headset to the laptop for DVDs, iTunes while I surf/Facebook/etc. However, whenever I look on the Apple or CNET websites for Bluetooth headsets, all I can find are headsets for iPhones, MP3 players, etc, but none that indicate use with a MacBook or a laptop. Can someone tell me if I can get a Bluetooth set for this purpose and what modifications or upgrades, if necessary, are needed? More tech data related to my system are shown below in case it helps answer questions I'm not smart enough to ask.
My 2.33GHz C2D MacBook Pro running 10.6.3 has suddenly decided it doesn't have an optical drive installed!
If I put a CD or DVD in the drive it will pull it in, spin but fail to recognise the disc. It is impossible to eject the inserted disc by any means - except by using a piece of cardboard to stop it spinning after a restart. I have tried data, audio and video CDs/DVDs.
System Profiler says I only have a hard drive attached to Serial-ATA and have no Disc Burning devices installed.
Has the optical drive failed? If so why does it still spin up if the computer doesn't know the drive is there? Does the fault lie elsewhere?
