Laptops :: Any Way To Lock Down MacBook With Password?

Oct 10, 2008

One that no one would be able to get in at all? I've read where someone could use the install disc and set a new password. There's no way at all to make my computer totally safe from someone getting into it?

Laptops :: Most Secure Notebook Lock?

Jan 17, 2010

Simple question: what's the most secure notebook lock of those that are widely available (points for it being available on Amazon or Newegg). I bought the Kensington Microsaver Keyed Twin Notebook Lock (two locks; I'm locking a hard drive as well) and the Kensington Combosaver Combination Notebook Lock Ultra to test out and (eventually) send back to Amazon. Links here for reference:

Obviously tubular locks can be picked by industrious thieves (or just about anyone). Does the same hold true for this particular combo lock? I'd much prefer a combo lock if I knew that it was absolutely secure (minus the combo falling into the wrong hands, of course), but some combo locks can be picked even more easily than tubular locks.

Anyway, my point is that I'd like a lock that acts as slightly more than a mere sight deterrent, and actually could stop a thief from taking my laptop/hard drive. Again, I'm looking for something that fits into the standard security slot and can be bought through Amazon or Newegg or another such retailer. Obviously I'm not expecting magic, since industrial solutions are very expensive, but I'd like to fully explore my options.

MacBook Pro :: Never Set Firmware Password - Gray Lock Screen

May 4, 2012

I got a mid-2011 Macbook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) and I have never set a firmware password for it, and now, out of the blue, when I boot using option I get a grey screen with a lockpad and a password field, I typed every password I can think of and none of the are correct. I have never set a firmware password, I would remember that, maybe it's a new malware?

Tried everything to boot to a different state but it would rather boot normally to OS X or I would get that grey lock. I can boot to DVD by choosing the DVD in the Start Up disk option, but it's useless, since I need the old password to turn off or change the firmware password. It will go to a grey screen with the lock if Option key is pressed during boot, so, that's useless too...no need to say cmd-opt-o-f is useless. Is there any other way?

Laptops :: MacBook Pro Default Username And Password?

Dec 27, 2009

I just purchased my first ever Mac yesterday. I've wanted one for years.

I'm trying to install some programs and when I attempt to, Installer prompts me for a Username and Password.

I was never asked while setting up my computer whether or not I wanted to assign my computer with a Username or password.

The Username field is already filled in with "Apple Owner" and the Password field is blank.

Does anyone know if there is a default Username and Password and if so, what it is?

(like a transparent screen lock app) I think you got the idea, can you recommend me a software that does this?

Laptops :: New WEP Password - Clearing Or Resetting AirPort

Nov 12, 2009

My MacBook Pro 17" 10.5 has been working flawlessly for almost two years. I am in an RV resort and their WiFi system has been updated. Prior to that everything worked fine with the old WEP password. However, with the new system and new WEP password my Mac Book Pro will not acknowledge the new password. I know the info I'm inputting is correct because my old iBook is working fine with the new password. I can only conclude that I need to clear every thing out in respect to the old name (The new name hasn't changed), IP address, and WEP password, so Airport will see the new info as if it is for the first time.

Software :: Unable To Reset Master Password / Super Secure Lock On System

Nov 11, 2010

I recently purchased a used imac g4 from a friend but I cannot seem to get it started. I tried to log in with the master password but do not have the password or install disk for OSX. I asked my friend about it and he said the same thing, he lost the user and master password including install disk. I took the comp from his hands anyway, it's in new condition and he never really used it, just forgot about it I suppose. It also seems that on startup the mac searches for disks and servers, so it could of been a part of a network system???????

I would like to know if there is a way to get into the bios and reset the whole system without password prompts and all that. Which is the best way to do this?

I have the mac osx install disk from my ibook but I tried to boot the disk and it's not booting. I also have the install disk for os tiger and that's not booting either. There must be a super secure lock on the system.

In trying to add up to a wireless network at home (with a PC and a laptop Windows XP) I switched to "start from network" on System Preferences. On reboot, shows image of file with a ? or flashes a world clip. Usual command+S or C, Alt, attempt to reboot from CD fail. Before attempting anything else I don't want to lose my documents. When reboot with Alt, the padlock with space for password appears. I didn't set a password when I installed OS.

Laptops :: Migration Assistant Requires Excessive Password Entries - How To Configure Settings

Dec 9, 2009

I used Migration Assistant to transfer apps and files from iBook G4, 10.4.11 to MacBook 10.6.2. The apps transferred and work great, except for iPhoto. I am still working on that one. The photos are in the MacBook, but I think I need to drag them into iPhoto. (?) The bigger concern is that once I found my transferred files in Users, I could not open any of the files without using my password - every time, every file. Further, even after opening the files, I cannot trash any of them without, again, using my password. Is there any way to get around this?

I tried not to use a different password when setting up the transfer, but Migration Assistant would not allow me to use the same one.

I was curious if this was a common problem? If not, is their anything I can do as a substitute for caps lock? Another key perhaps? Or, a button on the task bar or something?

MacBook :: Lock A USB Drive With 10.6.8?

Jun 19, 2014

I have an original MacBook1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to password protect my USB Drive. I have heard of OS X Lion being able to password protect USB Drives but I cannot upgrade to Lion, only 10.6.8, which I'm sure you know. I have seen many apps on the Mac App Store, but none are compatible with my MacBook. (Because of my OS and 32-bit. processor.) I want the password to come up automatically when you plug in the USB Drive. Or I would like to have the password come up when you try to open up the USB Drive. I do NOT want to have one that copies something onto the USB Drive that you can put stuff in. I know that must sound very wordy.
