Laptops :: Exterior Enclosure For MacBook HD

Sep 29, 2009

My daughter has a 3 year old 13" MacBook. We are upgrading the HD and would like to get an exterior enclosure for the old HD from this laptop. Would any 2.5" SATA enclosure work for this or are there other specifications I should be aware of?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Enclosure Not Working?

Aug 28, 2010

I went to the applestore and, after purchasing one to one, was turned down for a data transfer from my old macbook pro to my new macbook pro. The "genius" recommended that I buy an external hard drive from newegg and get some screwdrivers and do it myself. So I did, except (I think) he told me to get the wrong kind of external hard drive enclosure and now I'm just really upset because I went through the process and got the hard drive out of the old macbook pro perfectly. What do I need to (re)buy to make this data transfer work?

im looking for an external enclosure that provides a firewire option for my macbook pro. The reason i am doing this is because my macbook will randomly eject my usb powered one for no reason. I have been reading that firewire does not have this problem. Im only looking for an enclosure as I replaced my stock 320gb hardrive with a 64gb ssd for my main drive. Preferably something in the 30$ range because im a poor college student . Anybody know of a good enclosure to go with?

MacBook Pro :: Using Toshiba Canvio 1tb - Can't Open The Enclosure

May 13, 2010

So I took the advice of 9to5mac (might have been my first mistake) and ordered the Toshiba Canvio Plus 1tb portable external drive with the goal of removing the 2.5' 12.5mm 5400rpm hdd and transplanting it into my 13" Macbook Pro.

Unfortunately, the case has a (sort of) "unibody" design to it - there are no screws! I don't want to void the warranty by cracking the damn thing open.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Enclosure For Optical Bay?

Apr 8, 2012

I have bought a caddy from ebay some time back to replace the optical drive with ssd.  It worked great. Here is my current configuration: SSD is in optical driveStock hard drive stays same as it was Now I am planning to upgrade SSD and install the drive in the place of stock hard drive instead of in optical drive (to take advantage of higher speed).  But the stock hard drive doesn't fit in to the caddy that i bought.  It worked great for SSD, but not the internal hard drive.

1) Can someone recommend suitable caddy model, (hopefully cheaper one).  Or if i take out the screws from hard drive, it may fit into the caddy that i have.

2) My admin user is configured in SSD, which should not have any problem after migration.  But my regular user is in stock hard drive.

MacBook :: Unibody Space Between Glass Trackpad And Enclosure ?

I didn't have a chance to take a picture, but I can take one when I get home if needed.I never noticed this before, until I recently compared it to another Macbook, but my glass trackpad has a different feel, and unlike the other unibody macbook, the trackpad is not flush with the enclosure, and there is a small space on the left side, and an even smaller space on the right side.I don't want to take it into the store, if this is something that is normal, or within spec. Aside from this issue, the trackpad works without issue and everything else is great.

MacBook Pro :: External DVD Enclosure That Works With Super Drive?

Jul 1, 2010

Okay so I'm thinking of putting a Intel SSD in my MacBook Pro 13" as soon the next generation is launched thus removing the SuperDrive in order to fit both drives. I haven't used it a lot of times but a few times I do need it and that's why I'm now asking this question.

What external DVD enclosure will work with the MBP SuperDrive if any and how will i eject the DVDs. I'm not going to shell out a 100 bucks plus shipping to Sweden for the MCE Optibay so that's out of question, however cheaper ebay alternative that ships to Sweden with reasonable shipping is okay.

Also while I'm here. I've been thinking about upgrading to 8GB ram kit however a friend of mine told me any ddr3 sodimm ram won't work which sounds weird but to be safe I'm asking if that's true? I'm thinking of buying a Corsair 8GB(2x4GB) 1333MHz kit.

MacBook Pro :: External Storage And Backup - Get Expresscard / Enclosure?

Aug 15, 2010

I just bought a MBP 2010 with the i7, and I'm trying to figure out what to do for external storage and backup since this is my first Mac ever. I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?

MacBook Pro :: Move Hard Drive To Time Capsule Via USB Enclosure And Use 60 GB OCZ SSD

May 23, 2010

Right now I have an i5 MacBook Pro with a 320 GB hard drive. I want to move that hard drive to my Time Capsule via a USB enclosure and use a 60 GB OCZ SSD hard drive in my MacBook. Do you think this is a good idea speed-wise? Also, does anyone have any experience with using iTunes or viewing videos with a hard drive plugged into a Time Capsule that's a few rooms away? I'm probably only going to use the wireless hard drive to listen to music and maybe move files to it once in a while. Would that be too slow? I would unplug it from the Time Capsule and plug it into my Mac to transfer big files or install software that's on the external drive.

MacBook Pro :: No Boot When HDD Inside Machine, Just Fine In External Enclosure?

Mar 22, 2012

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro that's having a strange problem. It crashed hard last night while I was typing something- just froze solid, couldn't force quit, then the mouse pointer stopped. Shut it down with the power button, started it again, got the "not permitted" symbol (circle with a line through it). Restarted with my Tiger emergency USB boot drive and the hard drive didn't show up in Disk Utility. Whoa! Restarted with a Cmd - Opt - P - R, no change.

I pulled the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure that I have. It mounted just fine on my iMac so I backed up all of my data, then plugged the drive in to the MacBook to see what would happen-and behold the MacBook booted just fine with the drive attached in the external enclosure! It worked perfectly! At this point, I had no drive installed in the MacBook, the MacBook's hard drive was attached via an external USB enclosure, and I booted the machine via the Lion USB rescue utility. I ran Disk Utility thinking that it would have all sorts of errors to report, but the partition showed no problems. I repaired permissions for good measures, then put the drive back in to the MacBook. Again, I got the "not permitted" symbol.

I tried booting from the USB rescue drive- when I went to Disk Utility the drive showed up but the system hanged when I selected it. I restarted with the Snow Leopard DVD inserted but it froze before loading the setup process (I assume when it was trying to mount a file system from the HD).

I run Windows 7 in a Boot Camp config on this machine as well, so just for fun I tried to start from the Windows partition. To my surprise, it booted just fine from Windows. On top of that, once in Windows I had no trouble accessing the Mac partition.

I decided at that point that maybe something had gone awry that I couldn't see and that I should repartition the drive. I put it back in the external enclosure, booted the MacBook from the Snow Leopard DVD, used Disk Utility to repartition the drive, put it BACK in the MacBook and tried to boot from the Snow Leopard disc again- and it crashed in the same place. I rebooted from the Lion rescue drive and tried to use Disk Utility to check the drive- DU crashed when I selected the hard drive.

As a last-ditch effort, I swapped out the RAM and tried again. No go. At this point, I'm really hoping it's a problem with the hard drive, but seeing as though it works great from an external enclosure, I don't know what to think. I don't have any other 2.5" SATA drives to test in the machine so I have to assume that other than a failed SATA controller, firmware, or other logic board problem, it must be the drive, right?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Gets Error -50 When Connected Internally But Not In USB Enclosure

Sep 4, 2014

I have a SATA hard drive that works perfectly when connected through an external USB enclosure but whenever it's plugged into the internal SATA connector on my MacBook Pro I receive the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." any time I attempt to move or copy a file to it.

This doesn't happen with any other hard drive I connect internally, so I don't believe it's an issue with the internal cable.

I have made sure all permissions are set to allow reading and writing to the drive as well as selecting the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option in the Get Info panel.

Laptops :: SSD With Macbook Pro?

Nov 8, 2010

i have just started my phd and am looking for a portable laptop. my requirements are pretty basic - lots of word processing, music, movies, and of course internet. maybe some photo editing. now first, i am a little mixed up if i should go for the macbook pro (basic 13 inch) or the newly launched macbook air (13 inch basic). pro is more powerful and cheaper than air. but then air is lighter and also has the faster flash memory! on the other hand, i am tempted to go for an SSD option with the pro. the price goes up of course by 315 $ or so. but in a way then the system could last me for a very long time given that the new polymer batteries last 3 times than normal ones. and its really the batteries/HDD that get worn out first.

on the other hand i am a little wary of SSD technology. it seems that the old HDD's are not that bad, and have some advantages over the SSD's. an internet search reveals that the 1st generation SSD's had a lot of problems. so does apple now use 1st generation ones or newer ones? moreover, is the SSD option more reliable or the flash drive one (with air)? basically am ready to invest a big amount provided i am assured that the system will last me for a long time to come.

Laptops :: MacBook Pro Won't Start

Aug 24, 2009

I have a MacBook Pro that is approximately 2 years old. It has always worked fine without any issues at all. Tonight I was installing some scanner software for a Fujitsu S300M scanner. After installing the software it asked me to reboot so I had reboot. At that time I came back a minute later to see just a black screen. I then after a couple more minutes decided to hold down the power button and turn off the power since nothing was happening.

I then pressed the button again and I saw the light turn on on the button that opens the screen but that is all. There was no startup chime, nothing. All I could hear is at the same time the light came on the optical drive makes it's noise that it makes at bootup. I have tried repeatly to start the computer. I have pulled both the AC Power and Battery for several minutes with still no luck. As I said just the light comes on and the optical drive makes noise and that's it, no startup chime, nothing. I don't think this should be related to scanner software and I'm assuming it was a coincidence that it happened then but any idea what could be causing this and can I fix it without a trip to the genius bar?

Hardware :: Which Enclosure And HD Suitable For G4

Dec 30, 2009

Which Enclosure and HD for my iBook G4? I need to find a good enclosure and HD to use with my iBook G4. I'm running Tiger, OSX 10.4. I need to use the external HD to boot the computer, and also need two Firewire and one USB connections, so I can connect other external drives.

I've been using this enclosure: Rosewill RX30-U2FA Aluminum 3.5" USB 2.0 (USB1.1) 1 port (4pin) FireWire 400 (1394a) 2 ports (6pin) External Enclosure
with this HD: HDD 300GB MAXTOR 16M ATA133 7L300R0 for over four years.

I need a new external HD, because our neighbor was messing around with the circuit breakers and flipped the switches, which cut our power and damaged my external HD!
