I just installed the new Leopard and now i have only 3 gigs of memory left out of the original 74.21 gb. I know before i installed it i had ~27 gigs left, is there anyway to find out what is taking up all the additional space?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy iMac displays a message that says the memory run out of space and this do not allow me to work with some of my apps. The problem is that i do not have installed data that can fill 500 GB... in the apple menu - about this mac - the storage status shown in yellow as other takes 499 GB of the space but I don't have this kind of data or it is something that I cannot see.

I've got a Mac mini (2, 1) 2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM. I installed this prefpane:
/Developer/Extras/PreferencePanes/ to get a look at what is going on, like in Activity Monitor in Windows.
I opened up the Processor Palette and did some basic tasks like going over the Dock, opening Dashboard, etc and found that, at time, those basic tasks used 50% of my processing power! Also the Time Machine GUI used 90%
How can I reclaim some of this power?
I am considering getting a used MB Pro for editing home movies. OK, its not Final Cut Pro stuff, but this will be the most demanding thing I use the computer for. In the past I have used iMovieHD and iDVD to make movies on my 12" PB G4 with a 1.25 GHz processor and 1.5 GB of RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64 MB or 128 MB (not sure which). This has worked fine, but I can tell its a little slow. I certainly can't plan on doing anything else at the same time.
But, now the previous generation MB Pros are going for $1000 (used or refurb) on eBay and I am considering getting something like a 2.4 GHz / 2 - 4 GB with a 256 or 512 MB Nvidia 8600 graphics card.
I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.
I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.
Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?
Cheers
FInally my MacPro+Cinema Display arrived today, yet I have a small question regarding Windows. What is the best Windows operating system to fully take advantage of the MacPro processing power? I really need to be using Windows at least until January/February. The only software I use there is Rhinoceros and Maxwell Render. So I really need that the OS takes fully advantage of the 8 cores of the MacPro, to enhance my rendering speed! Which do you think is best for me, only to use Maxwell Render and Rhinoceros: Windows Vista or Windows XP?! And what version should I search for?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI wanted to ask for some advice on getting a new 15 inch MBP. I currently use a 2.2GHZ SR MBP with Anti Glare Screen. The computer works fine after a recent mother board change but I'm concerned about a future GPU failure. Applecare expires in June 2010. I was waiting for the refresh before buying and was wondering if I should go with the refurb 2.66GHZ MBP or a new i5 model. My priority is an anti glare screen and I notice that I would need to buy a high resolution screen in order to get that option on the new models. I'm not a power user and don't play games. My concern on the new model is that the text will be too small. How does the processing power compare on these two models and is the high resolution screen still readable for less than perfect eyes?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI realize this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to figure out how to check how much memory I have left. I know that if you do the following steps "About this mac --> More info... --> Memory" you can see how much you have all together, but it doesn't seem to say how much is being used, and how much free space is left.

Also i haven't got mavericks because i don't think i have enough and i just don't see how i've run out already?? How can i check how much i have left and whats taking up all the space?
On my previous OS version I simply clicked the activity monitor to see how much disc space was used and how much was available? I can't find that function now.

I was wondering if there was a way to check what is taking up your hard drive space. I have a 500GB drive and only have about 150GB left, and I really dont no why its that low...
I have a few movies on my computer (maybe about 20), but I cant see that taking 300GB...
I tried to just highlight everything, hoping a total file size would show, but I dont see one.
I just moved a bunch of video files that were about 1GB each onto an external, and it only cleared about 10Gb...But I have a feeling that iMovie might be the reason, as most of those video files were imported into iMovie. If thats the case, how do I clear out iMovie?
In one document in MS Word 2004, the language keeps reverting to French. I try resetting both the default language and the language choice as English (Tools > Language...), however, rather quickly it reverts back to French. This messes up the spell check. What can I do to keep it on English? (With a google search, I did find a 2005 post that mentions this as a systemic problem. But that forum didn't seem to offer a solution: [URL:....] Has this been settled elsewhere?)Second problem, perhaps related. MS Word automatically corrects some spelling as I type. However, in the document with the French problem, the text is being corrected in a weird way. It's not accepting a semi-colon ; next to a word. Instead, it inserts a space between the word and the semi-colon. What's that all about and how do I change it? Are these problems related?

MBP Penryn Late 2008 2GB RAM 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm getting the following popup from time to time: Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. Then, it pauses the app that uses the most memory (Safari) and shows a window where I can pause and resume applications, or force quit. Strange thing is, I still have 4GB left on my HD, and my memory bar is only 2/3 filled.

View 19 Replies View RelatedIf I delete a file from a memory stick- it does not free space. This is because the item has been moved to the trash and it hasn't been permanently deleted. If I want to free the space I need to empty my trash. If I don't want to empty my trash how can I delete a file from a memory stick to free space (permanently delete just 1 file)? Also (sort of linked) - how do I just delete 1 file from trash (empty just 1 file)? The reason I like to keep trash for a while just incase I need to restore a file, if I know I will not need to restore it, then I want to permanently delete just that file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Laptop runs slow and often spins when I open the browser or other apps sometimes and found the load average to be less than and also about 300MB free memory, till I notice swap as 40MB/256MB on iStat.
Questions:
1. How do I find out what process is causing the swap? The top does not show swap, and the vm_stat does not show swap either like vmstat does.
2. In the memory what does the wired, Active, Inactive memory mean? The only value that makes sense is Free.

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.
