how can i delete admin accounts on imac running lion

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer. I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password. I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account. It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.
why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"? The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

I just used migration assistant to transfer to my new macbook pro. When i was doing this i needed to set up a new account/user as the one already on my new macbook pro is named the same as the one i was migrating from. With me?
What i want to do is delete the ORIGINAL account and be left with the new one, i migrated over, as the sole account (bar guest account and whatever else is usually there).
I can't seem to see any option for deleting the original account, the minus option is faded out when i highlight the Original account in "Accounts" in the System Pref. window.
my mac does not have any admin account so basically my account is a standard account. i am unable to install my apps or change any settings because of it, basically i had an admin but after i reinstalled my lion os x.

I was running my iMac just in admin, which I know is frowned upon but that's the way I had it. I had a corrupt preferences file and I couldn't save any of my passwords etc Finally created a new user and reinstalled everything and it works fine. Had to replace all my passwords for my apps etc but other than that not that big a deal.
Question is can I now delete the other user now that I have a new admin login?:
It is just taking up storage space with a user which is corrupted but I don't want to erase the data in that user and also delete all my data in the new user as well.
Somehow all the accounts on my computer automatically changed to standard. The mac website said that this can happen after an upgrade and to fix it run the "reset password" utility from the install disc. I am using a school computer so I don't know where a mac os disk is. I am using OSX 10.5.8. I also don't know the root password.
I tried this to fix it : [URL] but the account I created was also set to standard. Is there any way to fix this without the install disc?
Edit:
I also tried this but it hung after starting SystemStarter: [URL]
I can't even change the time now....
I am getting my first mac for christmas (a 24" imac) and am planning to setup 3 accounts:
1 for me (admin)
Another one for me (standard)
1 for my brother (standard)
I plan to use the standard one for me as my main account but when installing apps and the like plan to switch to the admin one. What I was wondering is, as far as a I can tell from apple is that if I put music on my standard account my brother would not be able to see the music files, the same for pictures and movies. I would like to be able to share the music files and some pictures across both of our accounts. Would putting the music in itunes from the admin account make this possible and what about pictures? I would also like to keep some pictures private, as would he.
I'm locked out of my computer. I set my iMac to require a password for accounts. Now when I start up 3 accounts appear: my name, my name with an A and guest. My admin. password won't work on any of them. What should I do?

I had two accounts on my laptop, both were admins. I updated to Yosemite, had issues with compatibility to other Apple software, restored the laptop and both accounts lost their admin rights.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am not sure how it happened but after upgrading the gmail account, the user accounts were changed from standard users to Mobile Me users. None of the users has ever had that type of account, and I am trying to figure out how to get it back to a standard user account. When the user attempts to log in, it asks for the user name, but also the Mobile Me user name (which they do not have). to make it worse, Mobile Me is no longer accpting new users, so I annot just add an account and log in using the new info.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have tried to delete a few applications from my harddrive since upgrading to Snow Leopard. When I drag or send an app to the trash it immediately bounces back or reestablishes itself in the same location. I have noticed that a lot of the apps are locked in the Get Info pane. Unlocking makes no difference whether I can delete or not...even with an administrator password.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need some help to walk through adding an admin account and then deleting it after a software install on my kid's mac. I can get into single user mode, but I need some explicit instructions to add an admin account (for the purposes of installing a keylogger) then deleting the account without affecting his computer. thanks for sending me a message if you can help me with some of the commands to do this. There are a lot of instructions on the commands, but I don't want to mess it up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have slight problem. I am making a switch from Windows to Mac, I copied some of my old files, around 30 GB, to my new mac with the help of external HD. I placed the folder on my desktop and the problem is that, now I can't delete these copied files. When i try to delete them Mac asks for a admin password, I type the password but nothing happens the files haven't moved. I have set permission to read & write for all users. What could be the problem here? Is it that files on my old PC wher NTFS, but i copied them to mac OS X.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've got an iMac I'm selling and I'd rather delete the settings and accounts somehow than sit in front of it for 2 hours swapping CD's to reinstall Tiger.
I understand that in Single-User Mode you can delete the Admin account and therefore restore the machine, so that when you turn it on the next time and it doesn't detect any settings it gives you the Tiger intro, albeit annoying.
So? Anyone haz the command?
Also, post any commands for any other OS' to help OTHER forum guests, I know this would help a lot of people out with their for-sale Macs and new-used Macs.
I migrated my macbook pro over to my imac successfully. The weird thing was, when it asked about users, i didnt have the opportunity to overwrite (or merge) the mbp user with the existing imac user. That option was greyed out and the only option was to create a NEW user.. Not the best
None the less, i created the new user from my MBP and figured i would just move a few files over from the other user that I wanted and delete the old existing user.. but i cant!!!
I made sure to give full access to all admins and moved the files with no problem.. (p.s. both accounts are admin users with full permissions)
The problem is when I go into the system preferences, and click on users and then unlock the preferences, I can click on '-' to remove the old user and it asks if i want to create a disk image, just delete it, or remove just the user and keep the home folder.. I chose to create a disk image and delete the user
This is when it gets stuck. I click continue and i get the spinning pinwheel of death.
rebooted and still the same thing.
whats going on?? I dont know how to check if the computer is just not creating the disk image and there is something wrong with that, or if there is something seriously wrong with how the users/files are linked.
I was getting rid of some files of my desktop of the computer I use almost daily so it would not be huge in memory like images, and hew other items and I tried putting them in my trash so I can get rid of them, but it said well this:

I want to delete a previous account and create a new one. Unfortunately, when I go to System Preferences > Accounts, it is blank! It is completely empty, devoid of anything but a title that says Accounts. I have tried the following: Restarting; trying to access it on a different account; accessing Accounts through the help viewer, View menu, right-click on it's Dock icon, and through Spotlight search. In all cases, I get a blank Accounts screen. Also of note, the usually illuminated "Back" button on the upperleft isn't illuminated. All that's illuminated is the "Show All" button, which takes me back to System Preferences. I Verified Disk permissions. I tried to Verify Disk and discovered that it says it needs repair. This may or may not be the cause, but for now I can't use my Install CD because the drive is broken. (It keeps spitting out all CDs/DVDs I put in.)
I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.
