OS X :: Delete The Admin Account To Reset To Factory Defaults?
Aug 16, 2009
I've got an iMac I'm selling and I'd rather delete the settings and accounts somehow than sit in front of it for 2 hours swapping CD's to reinstall Tiger.
I understand that in Single-User Mode you can delete the Admin account and therefore restore the machine, so that when you turn it on the next time and it doesn't detect any settings it gives you the Tiger intro, albeit annoying.
So? Anyone haz the command?
Also, post any commands for any other OS' to help OTHER forum guests, I know this would help a lot of people out with their for-sale Macs and new-used Macs.

I have a Macbook air 10.9.4 ... I want to reset it to the factory settings. I do not know the admin password though. I tried doing to holding down command and R thing, but all that happened was a grey screen came up with a picture of a lock, and a block for a password to be entered in, but I don't have a password....

I need some help to walk through adding an admin account and then deleting it after a software install on my kid's mac. I can get into single user mode, but I need some explicit instructions to add an admin account (for the purposes of installing a keylogger) then deleting the account without affecting his computer. thanks for sending me a message if you can help me with some of the commands to do this. There are a lot of instructions on the commands, but I don't want to mess it up.

I migrated my old MBP to my new one last night. Everything was good except that I could not log onto my schools network. I have had this problem since my old MBP. I figured that by migrating my 'Preferences' I migrated the problem along with. After many attempts at many work-arounds, I decided that I will just start fresh.
Here is what I have done:
1) I popped in the factory disc and held 'C'
2) Utility ->Disk Utility ->Erase. I selected the Hard drive. The one in the top of the hierarchy. This also cleared the name of 'Macintosh HD' to 'Untitled'.
Now I did not realize that I was supposed to rename my hard drive "before" clicking erase. This is not a big deal, but was just wondering if I will be able to change that later? Do you think that when I go to use migration assistant this next time, if I only opt to migrate "Files and Folders" and "Applications" this will most likely solve my network configurations problem? That is, it will leave my network settings at the factory defaults so I start fresh?

I have a Mac mini from late 2010 that I am going to try to sell on eBay. Wondering what the most effective way to wipe all the data on it would be. I still have the disks that came with it but I'm wondering if there's something I should do to the hard drive before I use them to restore to factory defaults.

I was messing around with shapeshifter and custom icons, as well as dragging out folders like Documents, Applications, Pictures, Movies, Music onto the desktop. After this, all the Applications folders on all accounts only contain a non-functioning version of iTunes, save for the folder I dragged onto my Desktop. Can I reset my computer defaults? What do I do?

Im running 10.6.2
I just used migration assistant to transfer to my new macbook pro. When i was doing this i needed to set up a new account/user as the one already on my new macbook pro is named the same as the one i was migrating from. With me?
What i want to do is delete the ORIGINAL account and be left with the new one, i migrated over, as the sole account (bar guest account and whatever else is usually there).
I can't seem to see any option for deleting the original account, the minus option is faded out when i highlight the Original account in "Accounts" in the System Pref. window.

A freshly created account under 10.7.4. is a Admin account by default. The checkbox "Allow user to administer this computer" is grayed out. I end up with an Admin account and there is no way to convert this account into a Standard account. Facts: 10.7.4 - clean install on a current iMac i5 Freshly created account uses name of a deleted older account (my name)Repaired permissions several times (disk utility and "resetpassword utility" via terminal and safe boot)The older account had been relocated to a external disc for security reasons. There the access rights got corrupted so that I wanted to freshly create a new account and copy all files from a backup. how to create a new account for me?
