IMac :: Can't Delete A User (admin) - Get Spinning Pin Wheel

Dec 7, 2009

I migrated my macbook pro over to my imac successfully. The weird thing was, when it asked about users, i didnt have the opportunity to overwrite (or merge) the mbp user with the existing imac user. That option was greyed out and the only option was to create a NEW user.. Not the best

None the less, i created the new user from my MBP and figured i would just move a few files over from the other user that I wanted and delete the old existing user.. but i cant!!!

I made sure to give full access to all admins and moved the files with no problem.. (p.s. both accounts are admin users with full permissions)

The problem is when I go into the system preferences, and click on users and then unlock the preferences, I can click on '-' to remove the old user and it asks if i want to create a disk image, just delete it, or remove just the user and keep the home folder.. I chose to create a disk image and delete the user

This is when it gets stuck. I click continue and i get the spinning pinwheel of death.

rebooted and still the same thing.

whats going on?? I dont know how to check if the computer is just not creating the disk image and there is something wrong with that, or if there is something seriously wrong with how the users/files are linked.

OS X :: If I Delete A New User Login - Will It Delete Data On Admin?

Jun 26, 2009

I was running my iMac just in admin, which I know is frowned upon but that's the way I had it. I had a corrupt preferences file and I couldn't save any of my passwords etc Finally created a new user and reinstalled everything and it works fine. Had to replace all my passwords for my apps etc but other than that not that big a deal.

Question is can I now delete the other user now that I have a new admin login?:

It is just taking up storage space with a user which is corrupted but I don't want to erase the data in that user and also delete all my data in the new user as well.

IMac :: Screen Stuck On Spinning Wheel?

Nov 13, 2010

I was away at a friend's yesterday and left my computer on and downloading a torrent (I have done this before and everything has been fine). When I came back today, I noticed that my computer was working very slowly so I restarted it. However, it would just stay at the grey screen with the wheel spinning forever instead of moving on to the blue screen.

I know that this has been reported many times before, even on this forum, but everything I tried does not work. I tried:

Holding down Command+S at startup and entering the command fsck -fy. Did not fix the problem
Opening the Install Disc and going into Disk Utility. I repaired the permissions and verified that the HD has no problems but the problem persisted.

Going into Safe Mode. This actually works fine, but unfortunately offers an extremely limited functionality of my computer.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Change Admin User To Standard User (2 Admin Accounts)

Mar 6, 2012

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer.  I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.

For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password.  I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.

I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account.  It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.

why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"?  The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

OS X :: 24" IMac Not Booting - Froze With The Spinning Wheel Of Death

Mar 18, 2010

My imac has just all of a sudden stopped working out of the blue. It was working fine yesterday and then just froze with the spinning wheel of death.

After a long long time it still was frozen so i held power button for 4 secs to power down.

PS: i am running snow leopard up to date on both macs.

I tried to power up and it has random start up issues.

1) It sometimes has the flashing folder with question mark and grey/white screen

2) It sometimes has the plain blue screen

3) It once out of the last 30 attempts to boot goes to the desktop and i noticed my wallpaper had been reset to default mac one. - Every move i made had the spinning wheel and i did not get past loading
Firefox and it froze again.

I have tried resetting the PRAM from boot disk but did not help. I ran Disk Utility from boot disk and repaired permissions and disk. No change in imac..

I have also tried pulling out one o the 4gig rams and booting and still the same problem so im guessing the ram is ok??

I have tried connecting imac to my macbook pro via 6 pin firewire cable and booing the imac into Target mode but the imac never appears on the macbook pro desktop to access files. The cd-rom appears showing the disk in the imac and i could eject it from the macbook pro. So looks like the target mode boot works, kind of..

I am running out of options and found out today my imac is not under warranty anymore.. !!!!! $%#%$#%

Any chance i have a virus of some sort?

OS X V10.4 :: Old IMac Won't Start Up And Stuck In Gray Screen With Spinning Wheel

Apr 24, 2012

I have a very old IMac which I purchased back in 2005, and has been working fine. I have left it in storage about 1 and 1/2 years ago. Just now I try to restart it, the screen is forever stuck in the grey screen with the spinning wheel. I tried many times off-on, hold down the apple function key but none worked. I no longer have the rebooting CD with me. I wonder whether the computer can still be saved? I have already backed up the contents so it doesn't matter if fixing the computer requires me to delete all my old files. I think it's tiger or earlier that it's using.

IMac :: Transferring Apps From Admin To User Account?

Jan 20, 2009

I have an imac running Leopard which is my son's machine.

All his music and Office are sitting on the admin account, not him and I want to transfer it all to his account, but cannot find any clues in the help menu.

Also when logged on as him, I can't access the internet, even though I can when logged in as administrator - any clues?

I have tried installing Office when logged on as him but it won't recognise the admin log in details required during the install. My log in details are first name and last name but once I have entered my first name it won't allow me to enter any more characters. I've tried entering "admin" and "administrator" at this point but no dice.

What i want to do is delete the ORIGINAL account and be left with the new one, i migrated over, as the sole account (bar guest account and whatever else is usually there).

I can't seem to see any option for deleting the original account, the minus option is faded out when i highlight the Original account in "Accounts" in the System Pref. window.

OS X :: Getting Constant Spinning Wheel Of Death?

Aug 26, 2008

When I start up my iMac, it runs ok for a good 3-4 minutes, then all of a sudden when I try to click somewhere, I get the spinning wheel of death for about 2-3 minutes. Then when I click somewhere else I get another spinning wheel of death for another few minutes. This goes on and on and the computer is basically unusable, unless I want to wait 30 minutes to complete easy tasks that should take 2 minutes.

I tried resetting the ram by holding apple-option-P-R while restarting, but nothing is working. I have a good 15% free on my hard drive.

OS X :: 10.6 Not Booting - Spinning Wheel Of Death

Sep 8, 2009

I'm currently using Win 7 on my partitioned drive since I can't get OS X to boot. Here's what I did to screw everything up: Installed SL awhile back without performing what people here are referring to as a "clean install" (I had lots of third party apps installed). Things seemed to be working fine, though Finder seemed to lag more in 10.6 than it did in 10.5. Today, however, I tried updating Parallels 4.0. It required that I reboot in order to finish the installation.

But, when the Apple logo appeared, that damned spinner just wouldn't stop. [Perhaps Parallels is "tainting" the kernel?] First, I tried reinstalling from the SL Install DVD. No luck there. I tried downgrading to 10.5 (archive and install). Still didn't boot. I even tried several volume repairs. Those didn't help either. So, now I've heard that some users are having luck booting in safe mode. But, if I try that, will I be able to transfer data to a backup drive?

Anyway, now I getting very often a system hang with a spinning wheel. When I try to repair permissions in the Disk Utility, the progress it stays like 10 minutes on the same place at the very beginning, then spinning wheel again then the system doesn't react. I can move the mouse that's all.

OS X :: Ridiculous Finder Lag - Getting Spinning Wheel

Feb 19, 2010

In the past couple of weeks, Finder on my MacBook has been ridiculously laggy in doing just about anything. For instance, if I try to rename a file, I can usually count on having to wait anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds for the new name to appear on the Desktop. The same thing often occurs when moving files. Finder also constantly beachballs for ~5 seconds, which extends to things like save dialogs in other applications -- if I open up a Save as... dialog, the app usually hangs for awhile waiting for Finder to figure itself out. During these periods of lag, the computer is otherwise 100% responsive -- I can use other apps, I can open other apps via LaunchBar or the Dock (as long as I don't try to use Finder, which is busy beachballing), and my CPU usage sits at around 90% idle.

No problems at all except for Finder constantly beachballing and lagging. Performing disk tasks like moving and renaming files via Terminal complete instantaneously, so it doesn't look to be a problem with my disk. When I started writing this post, Finder was "Preparing to move" one file, and only just now finished. I don't recall exactly when these problems started, but it's possible it was around the time I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I imagine that reinstalling Snow Leopard would fix these problems, but I'd rather not resort to that. I've got another computer running the same software as far as I can tell that doesn't exhibit any of these problems.

Software :: Spinning Wheel After Login?

Sep 28, 2008

I'm really stuck with this one. I have just purchased 2 Macs, an iMac and a Macbook (the white one). This problem only happens with one of them, the Macbook.

When I login using my windows account (DOMAINUser) on my iMac everything works fine. When I try the same on my Macbook however I type my password, hit Login, and then I get the spinning colorful wheel, and nothing else (I have waited a loooong time).

This is really frustrating because:

1. I can log in to a local account on the Macbook

2. the settings between both machines for Active Directory are exactly the same

The only 3rd party software I have installed on both machines is Office 2008 (the standard edition - not home & student).

This is what I have tried so far (remembering, I'm not a Mac expert, but am a PC expert):

1. Reboot

2. Removed the mobile account that was created when I logged into Active Directory, then logged in again

3. Typed a wrong password, this confirmed that the Macbook was talking to the Windows server (I can see network traffic as well)

4. Cleared the Library/Caches folder, and System/Library/Caches folder

First I thought I had a faulty ram and I ran memtest but everything was ok! then I reinstalled the system but still the problem exists not so ften though.

most of the times happens when I work on safari.
