Intel Mac :: SuperDrive Ejecting Inserted CD / DVD After 30 Seconds
Mar 26, 2012
I have an iMac now powered by OS X Lion. But the problem is that when I try to insert a disk the superdrive accepts it but it doesn't show in the desktop. And after 30 seconds the disk is automatically ejected. I have tried restarting the PC a lot of time. The problem persists with all cds and dvds.
I own a macbook pro, mid 2009 and its superdrive was working fine till 3 days ago. Now, whenever I try to insert a CD or DVD, the drive doesn't read it at all and after 2'' it ejects it. I tried reseting SMC and PRAM with no luck. I also tried that "batmac" trick [hold the mac upside down] with no luck either except my neck is now damaged too..
So, two questions:
1)What could the damage be? It's not a lens thing since it doesn't even try to read the cddvd.
2)My warranty is no longer valid [expired 1 month ago..]. How much would it cost to replace it? I live in Greece and no Apple Store exists here yet. I must take it to my provider [authorized reseller], check it [don't know how much this is going to cost either] and have it replaced.
I just got my shiny new mac today. I'm ecstatic, as you can imagine. Except the optical drive is being weird. When I insert some types of burned media (Sony, TDK) it makes horrible scraping noises (I think I even smelled something bad too) and doesn't read the disc. TDK and Sony are good brands. They work on everything else I've ever tried. So, I'm guessing this isn't normal?
I tried calling AppleCare but what do you know, they're 6am to 6pm, which is great. So while I wait I wanted to ask - is this going to be an easy "they give me a new drive and I put it in" type of deal, or am I going to have to be cutting some red tape? And can I do this at the apple store?
Recently, my internal superdrive started ejecting any sort of media I'd insert, about 30 seconds of chewing on it and then spitting it back out. Does that mean the drive's dead, I can't even run hardware test since I can't mount the boot disc that originally came with the PB? The weird thing is that it is showing in System Profiler and there aren't any messages or errors! I tried inserting a cleaning disc but it received the same treatment as any other cd or dvd I had tried inserting.
The Super Drive on my MBP seems to be completely busted, whenever I try to read a DVD or CD it takes the disc in, spins it around a couple of times and then ejects it again without ever coming up with any options as to what to do with the disc. Discs don't appear in Finder either. It's obviously failing to read the discs and ejecting them within 30 seconds.Â
Now I've searched for a solution and as a result I've reset the NVRAM to no avail, and also tried using a CD lens cleaner but that seemed to have no effect either, I guess maybe as it got ejected within just 30 seconds as every other disc does.Â
The next solution I've found online is to delete Finder's preference files. The files I'm supposed to delete are "com.apple.finder.plist" and com.apple.sidebars.plist", however neither of these files appear to exist on my computer. Â
I remember discovering the fault while my MBP was still in warranty but I rarely use the Super Drive so totally forgot about it and it's now out of warranty
I have never had any problems with this SuperDrive, until I installed Toast last week. I went to burn a disk, and it failed the burn; then after that any kind of disk I inserted into the drive would be ejected.
The drive doesn't even try to read it, nor does it try to spin up whatsoever... I put the disk in, it makes an 'accepting' noise, then less than two seconds later, it rejects it. I'm running 10.6.4, with HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N running AP12 firmware.
Like I said before, the disk drive never had trouble reading anything, but all of a sudden decided to reject every one under the sun.
Restarting in Windows doesn't effect it, nor does inserting a disk before the computer boots. Everything appears normal in diagnostics, but the drive is not even trying to read it.
The CD slot is so close to the memory card slot, and I usually find them by feel as they are on the far side of the computer. I have to actualy stand up to peer around the side of my screen. While trrying to retrieve the card, I heard something drop, presumably it has droped inside somewhere.
I have a mid-2010 iMac. Recently, it has failed to mount DVDs, either video or data, on a reliable basis. I have been able to work around it by restarting my iMac, but that doesn't always work.

i have an imac and have accidentally inserted an sd card into the cdrom drive located on the side of the screen, one above the other. how can i get it out as it seems to have disappeared?
How do I remove a usb cable for a media card reader after I have downloaded photos? I get the "you just screwed up your card dummy" notice.I finally figuered out how to eject a cd/dvd. The Mac only takes small media cards and I have to use a card reader to load photos onto my Mac from a SanDisk CompactFlash camera card. With the cd/dvd's I can go to Finder and hit "eject" and it will. With the usb for the card reader I have to pull it out, of course it will not eject like a cd. Â
I've been having problems with my iMac recently, more precisely with my DVD drive. I think it's a software problem, and no mechanical problem. Let me explain:Â
When I insert a DVD:
- it will sometimes work perfectly. I can read, burn or whatever I feel like…
- it will sometimes not work. I don't know why, but the drive gives a few try (mechanical noises), and than ejects the DVD. If I try a few more times to reinsert it, it will sometimes just keep the DVD and not eject it, without recognizing it. When I try to open the Disk Utility program, it will simply froze. Or it will open after 5 minutes, but the DVD player will not exist and not appear.Â
I need to restart the computer. Sometimes it will work after the restart. Sometimes not. It's really random, and I haven't found out on what it depends… Sometimes, when I reboot it because of a trapped-unrecognized DVD, the DVD player will not open. "Initialization error [-70012]"…Â
I've tried Option-Cmd-P-R at the Start, but it didn't help… I feel like there's something wrong with the software.Â
It's a 2 years old iMac, using Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8).Â
I've tried looking on the net, but a lot of people are experiencing mechanical problems (it simply never works), which I think is not the case here (it does randomly work perfectly).

I am using a Mac Mini with a Realtek USB wireless dongle to connect to the internet. The software and drivers appear connected perfectly and i see the wireless utility and I can access my wireless network, which says signal strength 100%. I connect to it and it accepts the wireless key. Says connected. Then after a few seconds the connection is lost and it says 'Disconnected'. A few seconds later it connects then disconnects and this continues indefinitely but Safari never allows me to access any webpages.Â

I got this message this afternoon "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with the options to either "Ignore" or Eject"  This is in reference to my External Hard Drive "Buffalo" 1TB. I just got my Mac 27inch this week and when i got it i hooked up this hard drive to it, historically used on my old windows machine, but was still FAT32 formatted. I was able to upload all my pics to Aperture and music to iTunes. Was able to surf the data no problem. This afternoon i noticed that it was no longer visible in the "Finder" and afre rebooting several times, got this message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" Neither the mac nor the HD was moved since yesterday, early this am when it worked. Â
Some info:I had used this external storage unit for more then a year.I sold my PC today so cant test if the hard drive still works on that. I have the latest 27 inch mac (2.7GHz)Storage is connected to a power source ( I tried both USB and FireWire, both yield the same message)
This machine will simply not go to sleep. I have wake on lan turned off, bluetooth turned off, wifi turned off. OSx Lion 10.7.3. Click finder - Sleep, Screen goes black, between 3 and 10 seconds later : machine is back on. Using Bluetooth Trackpad , Mouse and wired keyboard. Nothing else is connected to the machine (apart form an ethernet cable).
I was tempted to put this in the 'Safari' section, but after a little more trial I thought it went deeper than that. The issue is, for about two weeks now, i'll be surfing the web and then head to one of my commonly visited websites (namely Wikipedia, Google, Huffington Post, and this website) and though I'm fully connected to the internet, the pages won't load and i get the "Server Not Found" noitce.Â
I don't, however, have this problem with ALL webpages when this is happening to the others. Gmail, Facebook, Mediaite, etc. all have no issue and they work just fine. Â
Primarily I use Google Chrome as my browser. So the first thing i did was clear the cache to see if it would help, but nothing changed. So i opened both Safari and Firefox and they both suffer the same problem. After about 60 seconds the issue goes away and all things are normal again. About 10 to 15 minutes later, if I'm still surfing the web, the problem may creep back up again. I can't say for sure but I've noticed that this typically happens when I first try to go to those pages after a few hours of not using the net.Â
When this happens, I've also tried loading these pages on my iPhone and iPad during the 60 seconds and have encountered the same problem. Using a Wireless internet connection thru a cable modem.
The internal SuperDrive has a big demage and needs to get replaced by a new device. The replacement is to expensive. Therefore I bought an externalisier drive. But how can I deactivate the SuperDrive by Software?Â

This has been happening consistently when I try to burn DVD's, during this time the drive stalls and I am not able to eject. (Possibly because software is trying to write with faulty hardware maybe?) The error message changes if I try to burn DL DVD 's. Also CD's often fail while burning some do complete. Errors also occur with Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere CS5 and DVD Studio Pro. Â
MATSHITA DVD-R  UJ-85J: Superdrive won't accept CD or DVD keeps spitting back out - alas 1000's of iMacs with this superdrive have had the SAME problem from what I have read elsewhere. Apple should replace for free or discount for us out of warranty [URL]
I'm having issues with the computer, among which is that the superdrive will not accept any disks... it clicks a couple of times, then spits the disk out. This has been an intermittent problem for about 5 months, but now it seems to be constant. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior (hard drive based) say that I have problems that can only be fixed by restarting with a system disk or DW disk inserted.
I did do the System Management Controller reset but it didn't work. I'll take the computer to an apple store if need be, but is there any way to force a disk to be accepted and read? Also, since I bought Lion via the app store, and have no system disk. Is there a way to fix my hard drive without a physical system or repair disk? I do have the physical disk for Leopard if that would work on Lion. I can't get a CD or DVD to stay in the drive and be read.
I just tried to put a DVD into my iMac and it ejects it after about 15 seconds. I tried another DVD and it does the same! I bought the Mac December 2010 so I no longer have Apple Care. it doesn't need a new drive!
