Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?

IMac :: Installing Panther On External Hdd?

Mar 26, 2009

I've acquired a rev A bondi blue iMac G3 (the one in my sig... which doesn't have fire wire). It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.

I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?

OS X :: Installing Leopard From External HD On IBook G4 14"

Jan 7, 2009

nice to be a part of macrumors.

just here to ask one simple question:

i put leopard's OS X install dvd on my western digital passort 250gb external hard drive. i plugged it into my ibook, recognized it as a OS X install dvd. i could click it and it can give me the option to restart my computer in order for the installation to begin. the thing is, it stops me and tells me to boot from the installation CD instead.

i'm just doing a little experimentation, but is it true that PowerPCs need Firewire external HD's in order to startup from it?

i also tried using 'startup disk' to restart from the external hd. no luck, it gives me that error sound (the sound in system prefs. says it's called 'funk').

but i just want to know how else i can install leopard. my optical drive is totally messed up, and my iBook unexpectedly kernel panics at the wrong moments: usually when i install 10.4.11 from the software update or when i restart the computer and it's unable to book from the grey screen or the blue screen or even when it shows the desktop then suddenly kernels.

OS X :: Installing Leopard Using External Monitor From MacBook

Mar 28, 2009

So I'm in a unique situation. I'm upgrading my Tiger Macbook that has a broken screen (only top 1/3rd is visible) to Leopard. The problem is, the Leopard installer runs on the primary display so I can't see the installer properly. I've tried blind clicking to no avail. I was wondering if there is anyway to use the Leopard installer with an external screen? I've searched the internet to no avail and was wondering if I could get a definitive answer for this problem. I've just ordered a new screen for the Macbook and am going to try to DIY replace it.

Hardware :: Installing New External WD Hard Drive On PPC Mac

Sep 17, 2009

I just thought I'd mention this for anyone who is thinking of using a Western Digital 1TB drive on your PPC Mac running 10.4. The MyBook Essential 1 TB external USB 2.0 drive is not compatible* out of the box with my Mac PPC G5 computer. If I plug it in, I get a message that the drive is not readable and an offer to initialize it. However when trying to partition the drive using Apple's Disk Utility (in 10.4), I get formatting error: Input/output error.

The solution is to download the WD Macintosh + Turbo Drive utility from Western Digital and install it on your PPC Mac. As previously mentioned, I have a G5, so while I assume this should work for any PPC Mac running 10.4.11, I don't know for sure. If you have an intel Mac there should be no issues with this drive requiring the utility to be installed. This hard drive worked as it should when it was first plugged into the MBP.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Installing Snow Leopard On External HD?

Apr 26, 2012

I am currently running Lion on my Mac Mini, I have an external drive onto which I want to install Snow Leopard so that i can play some older Mac games I have which do not work under Lion. I insert the Snow Leopard CD, restart the Mac whilst holding down the option key and boot from the Snow Leopard CD, hoping to then select the external HD for Snow Leopard installation. The Mac starts up, I can hear the Snow Leopard CD being accessed, however, after about a minute or so, a screen comes up saying that I have to shut down the Mac by holding the power button, so obviously the Mac will not continue to boot from the Snow Leopard CD. Is this because I am running Lion on the Mac or is there a problem with the Snow Leopard CD. If it is because the Mac is running on Lion, how can I install Snow Leopard to the external HD. I am using the Newer Technology USB 3 Universal Drive Adapter to connect the external HD to my Mac, the Mac sees the external HD no probs and I can format the external HD etc., so that side seems to be OK.

OS X :: Installing Tiger Directly To External Hard Drive

Jan 29, 2010

For the moment I have my OS back up (10.3.9 )cloned to an ext FW HD. I have a 10.4 install or unpgrade disc (not sure which, nor if the disc is any good and would prefer not to risk screwing up my int.HD). Could I install Tiger directly to my ext.HD, thus being able to use the two systems depending on where I boot from. (if the install works?) Asking this because I'm not sure if I have enough free space on my Int HD (7GB) to do an Install and Archive, where as on my Ext HD I have about 11GB free space on the partition. Then if it all works could I CCC it back to my Int.HD?

OS X :: External Speakers Won't Work After Installing Adobe Flash Player?

Jun 10, 2009

I have had a MacMini for about 2 months now, and use brand new Creative brand speakers to plug into it. Everything has worked fine, but this morning as I went onto a band's MySpace page I was informed that the music could not be played without installing a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. So I clicked the link and went through the installation and sure enough now the MySpace music player came up. Unfortunately, I noticed there was no sound coming out of my speakers. First, I checked each plug, but still no sound. Second, I reinstalled Adobe Flash Player for Mac (from the Adobe website), but it still didn't work. Third, I took the audio plug connecting my speakers and MacMini out and noticed that the music was playing through my MacMini, but when I plugged it back in I noticed that it wasn't coming through my external speakers. Dumbfounded, I plugged my iPod in through the Aux In on my speakers and noticed it worked perfectly fine. Finally, I switched audio cables connecting my MacMini and my Creative brand speakers and it still didn't work! What is going on here?

So, could I install Leopard Server on my Powermac by putting it into Target Disk Mode and installing it via my MBP?

MacBook Pro :: Installing And Configuring New Intel G2 SSD

Jan 9, 2010

how to get it setup nicely. [URL:..] So first thing, I need to physically install the drive. Is there a good tutorial for a macbook pro 4,1 (old style aluminum) that shows you how to swap the hard drives? I'd like to just mirror the contents of my internal drive, and I've got an external 2.5 inch enclosure to help me. So, do I take out my current drive and put that in the enclosure and startup and mirror to the SSD (with super duper?)? Or is there a better way. Also does it need any special drivers or setting up? And finally are there any tips on perfomance tuning and optimizations I can make.

Intel Mac :: Installing 10.6 On Preinstalled 10.7 Mid 2011?

Apr 5, 2012

As far as I'm aware the hardware is not an issue it's the firware lacking the drivers to be able to install Snow Leopard. I've tried 10.6, 10.6.3 & 10.6.7 to no avail.

I've also tried formatting the drive and booting the dmg's like that also to no avail, now backing up to lion via time machine.

Years of using windows being easily configurable and moving to mac 4 months ago finding that it quite restrictive but probably why its safer as an OS is frustrating.
