I have a computer running Windows Vista, and I want to install Mac OS X Leopard on a 500GB external USB hard drive. I have seen many tutorials on how to do this on a Mac, but not on a PC.

I just replaced the hardrive in one of my macbooks. i am trying to load snow leopard on it and it just skips through the installation and says Intallion failed?
anyone have any thoughts. i am installng it from an external harddrive!

just here to ask one simple question:
i put leopard's OS X install dvd on my western digital passort 250gb external hard drive. i plugged it into my ibook, recognized it as a OS X install dvd. i could click it and it can give me the option to restart my computer in order for the installation to begin. the thing is, it stops me and tells me to boot from the installation CD instead.
i'm just doing a little experimentation, but is it true that PowerPCs need Firewire external HD's in order to startup from it?
i also tried using 'startup disk' to restart from the external hd. no luck, it gives me that error sound (the sound in system prefs. says it's called 'funk').
but i just want to know how else i can install leopard. my optical drive is totally messed up, and my iBook unexpectedly kernel panics at the wrong moments: usually when i install 10.4.11 from the software update or when i restart the computer and it's unable to book from the grey screen or the blue screen or even when it shows the desktop then suddenly kernels.
So I'm in a unique situation. I'm upgrading my Tiger Macbook that has a broken screen (only top 1/3rd is visible) to Leopard. The problem is, the Leopard installer runs on the primary display so I can't see the installer properly. I've tried blind clicking to no avail. I was wondering if there is anyway to use the Leopard installer with an external screen? I've searched the internet to no avail and was wondering if I could get a definitive answer for this problem. I've just ordered a new screen for the Macbook and am going to try to DIY replace it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Lion on my Mac Mini, I have an external drive onto which I want to install Snow Leopard so that i can play some older Mac games I have which do not work under Lion. I insert the Snow Leopard CD, restart the Mac whilst holding down the option key and boot from the Snow Leopard CD, hoping to then select the external HD for Snow Leopard installation. The Mac starts up, I can hear the Snow Leopard CD being accessed, however, after about a minute or so, a screen comes up saying that I have to shut down the Mac by holding the power button, so obviously the Mac will not continue to boot from the Snow Leopard CD. Is this because I am running Lion on the Mac or is there a problem with the Snow Leopard CD. If it is because the Mac is running on Lion, how can I install Snow Leopard to the external HD. I am using the Newer Technology USB 3 Universal Drive Adapter to connect the external HD to my Mac, the Mac sees the external HD no probs and I can format the external HD etc., so that side seems to be OK.

I have booted up using the install DVD that i bought a couple years ago to upgrade from Tiger. However each time i install i get an error saying that it cannot be installed. It allows me to start the install and is almost complete before i get this error. I have it partitioned using the Apple Partition Map so i can boot up on a PowerPC computer.
What should i do to install 10.5 on an external drive?

I've been using the same 500gb external drive since last September for my iMac, also with 500gb. A couple weeks ago I was getting an error saying that there was not enough room on the external drive to backup my computer. I posted here, and I was told to erase old backups. So I did that.
Now, I'm getting another strange error saying that the external drive requires over 500gb to complete the backup. I don't see how this is possible since the my computer doesn't even hold that much.
I have had a Lacie 500gb external hardrive formatted and used with time machine on my macbook pro for about two years now. I haven't had any problems until recently. When I plugged it in, it wouldn't mount. I opened disk utility and it was visible but showed as unmounted and I wasn't able to mount them manually from there.

I've got a WD 500 GB external hard drive that has worked perfectly for about a year. I don't use time machine or any other backup software. I prefer to organize it myself and backup files individually.
Suddenly, today, it's freaking out at me. I've got several folders in it that I copy things too. One of them being Music. I was copying a few gigs of new music into that folder, but when it finished copying I couldn't access any of the other files.
It's like I'm stuck in the sub menu where I can just see the music I have on the drive and nothing else. The rest of the files are there somewhere because I only have about 50gbs of music and it says that 300gbs of space are being used, but I can't see them and i've tried a bunch of different things to get them to show up.
Yesterday I tried to upgrade my WD software but after the update was finished my external drive was no longer visible, either on finder or on disk utility. I have valuable information in there about my recent research for the uni.

Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? View 15 Replies View Relatedwhen I went into the "get info" window for the G-Drive and switched the ownership/permissions dropdown from "read/write" to "no access". When I tried to switch it back to read/write, it would say read/write in the dropdown, but then I'd try to access the g-drive and I'd only get to the first set of folders--when I'd click on a folder, there would appear to be nothing in it. (Not sure if this is really related to my current problem.)
I then tried ejecting and remounting the drive, but it didn't show up on my desktop. Stupidly, I assumed my computer didn't recognize it at all and unplugged the firewire without ejecting thru disk utility. When I did this I got the device removal error.
I then plugged the firewire back in and tried repairing the disk in disk utility, but it said it didn't need repair. When I click on the G-Drive in disk utility the info at the bottom says:

0 Files! I'm worried about losing all my stuff! I then tried DiskWarrior (v4.0). When I first opened it I think the info at the bottom said "This disk is a Mac OS Extended disk. This disk does NOT appear on the desktop." I'm not quite sure about that "not" b/c after rebuilding the directory of the G-DRIVE I know it now says "This disk does appear on the desktop." Anyway, it's definitely not appearing on my desktop. After building the directory it said "All file and folder data was easily located. Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicate that there will be changes to the number, the contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders." And later: "19 files (and 2 folders) had a directory entry w/ an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired." And:

I then clicked "Replace" whereupon it said it was successfully replace. But still it did not appear on the desktop even after ejecting, remounting, rebooting computer, etc.

(FYI I already tried going into the Finder permissions and unclicking and reclicking the box for showing disks on the desktop. Also, I plan on getting DataRescueII in case that's necessary, but i hope it isn't)
I have a tower Mac Pro with Snow Leopard running on it.Unfortunately one of the software that I use doesn't have yet a Snow Leopard update. So I am thinking maybe I can install older version of Leopard on one of the internal drives (i have 3 additional internal drives), so I can boot my computer from either Leopard or Snow Leopard, depending on needs (i don't want to get rid of Snow Leopard).

I've acquired a rev A bondi blue iMac G3 (the one in my sig... which doesn't have fire wire). It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.
I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?
I just thought I'd mention this for anyone who is thinking of using a Western Digital 1TB drive on your PPC Mac running 10.4. The MyBook Essential 1 TB external USB 2.0 drive is not compatible* out of the box with my Mac PPC G5 computer. If I plug it in, I get a message that the drive is not readable and an offer to initialize it. However when trying to partition the drive using Apple's Disk Utility (in 10.4), I get formatting error: Input/output error.
The solution is to download the WD Macintosh + Turbo Drive utility from Western Digital and install it on your PPC Mac. As previously mentioned, I have a G5, so while I assume this should work for any PPC Mac running 10.4.11, I don't know for sure. If you have an intel Mac there should be no issues with this drive requiring the utility to be installed. This hard drive worked as it should when it was first plugged into the MBP.
