I might just be losing my mind but has there always been a grey bar at the bottom of the screen? It sort of tells me when pages are loading or what website accessing and such?Â
I came home to find my IMAC stuck at the grey apple screen with a circle of dots spinning...I've been trying to piece together the events that led up to this:
1) The night before I ran some updates including the osx 10.7.4 update and then selected restart and went to bed
2) THe next day my son says that they tried to put a DVD in and it was still on the grey screen...they inserted the DVD anyway
3) I tried unplugging etc and then rebooting but same grey screen
4) I rebooted with the track pad held down and it managed to eject the DVD
5) Now when rebooting i get 3 bleeps repeated, I've retried this a few times and its the same
6) I have rebooted using CMD R and see that the Macintosh HD is listed showing 466 GB free which I hope means that the other 534GB is still on there...not sure if I should repair itÂ
I've had this IMAC since January and am ashamed ot say that I DONT THINK I HAVE A BACK UP yet...I was ust about to buy an external HD big enough to back it up so VERY CONCERNED about losing my recently uploaded entire family home movie collection as I speak my wife is holding back the tears..
I have an imac from late 2008 with snow leopard. Late saturday evening 24 Mar I had powered down my imac then later turned it on. Now only a grey screen appears, nothing more. If I leave the imac on a folder with a question mark appears and blinks.I have tried the following to fix the problem and ALL HAVE FAILED:they are:
1. resetting the pram. it doesnt work.
2. booting from the installation cd. The imac doesn't even READ the cd, the screen remains grey and doesn't read the cd at all.
3. booting in the safe mode. nothing happens, the screen remains grey.
4. booting in apple hardware test mode: nothing happens screen remains grey.
5. boot with option key pressed, so as to choose mac HD or my windows partition. nothing happens, the screen remains grey.
When I power on my imac I heard the chord, a slight spin of the HHD I'm sure that's what it is,and then nothing.grey screen.I have tried unpluggling the power cord for 15 seconds, reconnecting it, waiting five secondsand then powering up the imac. it doesn't do any good.do you think it is a hard drive error or failure? why doesn't it read or boot from the instillation CD?? and yes I am using the correct disk.Â
Info: imac 2.8 ghz int core 2 duo, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
everytime I try to boot my iMac it gets stuck at the first grey screen. No logo, no loader, nothing but a grey screen. I have tried everything here > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 > with no results. The grey screen remains there, with no changes. The only thing that seems to work, but only for a seconds, is holding the option (alt) key at startup. After a few seconds, the pointer of the mouse appears.
url...its been there for a couple of months now but not too sure what it is, perhaps mould? I have apple care with it, but i don't think its worth taking into for inspection yet. Its located towards the right edge of the imac.
I tried the two responses that said to delete some plugins to get Safari to let PDFs go to Finder so they could be downloaded. Didn't work for me. I'm guessing I accidentally changed something in Safari (Security?) that prevents the switchover; I don't get the four icons at the bottom of the screen for certain documents (Including the one inviting a download PDF to Finder), while it works for others. So I have to request paper copies of some forms to be snailmailed to me, rather than emailed.
I have a mid-2007 model and I replaced the x2 stock 1GB sticks with x2 2GB sticks. I followed the correct procedures, (I think), and when I powered it on the fan came back on but the screen was black. I unplugged the unit and replaced put the old RAM back in and now when I power it up the screen just goes grey and beeps when I turn it on.
I just installed OS X 10.6 and now when i try to turn on my computer, i get this grey screen with computer code on it and the black box that says to restart my computer. I tried safe boot along with all the other steps on the page for the grey screen but nothing works.
2 vertical lines, running from top to bottom, have suddenly appeared on my screen. On a white back ground they appear blue and green. they have a wide space between them. I switched off and on but they are still there. Whats happening?
I have a late 2006 iMac that has just started giving me a message to reboot after a black screen comes down slowly from the top top of the screen to the bottom. I reloaded software and restored from Time Machine, but it keeps happening, now several tomes a day.
Turn on Mac goes to grey apple screen cog wheels spins but its stuck there tried control option p and r doesn't do anything tried turning it on while holding shift key to try and get it in safe mode but that does not work either.
My 27" iMac, running OS 10.6.8, has started running slowly when loading Apps and when running Safari. Also, when powered, on It has started stopping on the grey screen before the Apple logo displays. To get past this I must turn the Mac off and then back on.
We did the most recent update that Apple produced and our iMac has yet to turn back on properly. We get a white screen with a flashing grey folder that has a question mark on it..
I have a IMac that suddenly can't move past the grey screen, apple logos, and spinning wheel. I have used the OS system disk to repair the Macintosh HD, the app stated that the repair of the volume was successful, but in trying to use the HD to restart, I am still stuck with the spinning wheel. What should I do next, or what am I doing wrong?Â
My iMac was performing ver slowly so I restarted. After that cannot get passed the grey screen.I tried holding the shift button down to go into safe mode but a kernel screen starts ( black and dos type commands appear)
Not sure exactly when it started but I noticed it about half an hour ago and have come straight online to 'troubleshoot' the problem. The is a grey smudge/shadow in the middle of my screen and I am unable to remove it by cleaning the screen or restarting my computer. I have seen similar issues posted with no resolve so I don't know if people discovered a fix or just gave in and took the computer into the Apple store. With no way to transport the computer safely into the city centre, I would like to avoid doing that if at all possible. Â

The bottom left hand quadrant of my screen has dimmed. Apple repaired this a year ago and the problem is back. My Applecare is expiring soon. What are my options?
I have a Mac Mini that my sister gave me because she said it stopped working. She said she wanted me to get all her photos off of it. Its a Model A1176 1.66/2X512/80/COMBO/AP/BT I tried playing with it and it powers up, shows the Apple on a grey screen with a spinning little icon.. It does that for about 30 sec and then turns off. I opened it up, took the hard drive out, put it into an external USB case and hooked it up to my Windows PC and loaded MacDrive 8 software. Got the drive to be recognized on the PC and backed up all her photos.
My 27" iMac, from the centre to the left side of the screen has a light grey shade whilst the right is normal, at times the screen flickers to normal then go's back to the light grey shade.
My computer started having problems some two weeks ago.First it was very slow then it blocked during the use of Photoshop. At that stage I used Apple jack to test and solve the problem and it worked. But two days later the problem came again as a verry slow start-up.I checked the disk and there was no problem signaled.I tried to boot the computer on the installation disk in order to execute the Hardware test...The test gave the folowing error code: 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0)Â
I've had my iMac, 27" 3.4 Ghz i7 16GB, since Jan 2012. From my excitement of having 2TB, I put all my info from every hard-drive ever owned on it, deleting the originals with the faith that I can trust it till I purchase a 2TB external for the backup.Â
Two months later it crashed showing the 'grey screen of death' and got stuck with every restart on the welcome-screen (grey apple logo with the circuling loading graphic underneath) only with a new loading bar in below them. The service center claimed the HD crashed, and replaced it (and it took me more than a month going around finding a place that would recover the data before they could replace the HD)Â
I finally receive it after a long period of living on this earth without a computer (which is problematic for a freelancing graphic designer) and 4 days later crashes again the same exact way, this time the service center claimed it was a software problem but got it fixed.Â
I've received it yesterday again and I only downloaded trusted software (VLC, DIVx...) and did not dare transfer any old data and stuck to only surfing the net catch up to what life I've been missing out on. It is still crashing but restarting fixing it.Â
The only thing common with all 11 'crashings' is safari was open, and I really doubt and do hope that it's not the problem.
