View 13 RepliesI would like to be able to have my email set up on a usb memory stick so that I can carry it around, plug it in to a mac and there's my email or plug it in to a pc and hey presto theres my email again. If that's not enough then I would like to be able to have multiple email accounts on the (living in a dreamworld) email client.Anyone got any ideas? I have tried a version of thunderbird that was sort of cross platform and mobile but it didn't work too well and writing a letter and posting it may well have been quicker at times.

Was working on my emails and computer crashed. When I turned the computer back on everything came back except the email program and emails.
Instead it asks me to open new mail account. I can find the emails on my hard drive but when I click on them...goes to same window to open and asks to open new mail acct. How can I recover and have access to my mail account?

I've made two coasters today on my iMac 27" core i7.
I am using Verbatim DVD +R DL blanks and utilized Disk Utility to make one coaster (copy to a .CDR and then burned) and then used Toast 10 to write IFO files.
The DVD will "run" but looks and sounds like a satellite tv signal in bad weather - choppy all over the place. This happens on 4 players - two separate laptops, an xbox 360, and even the original iMac 27" I used to write the DVDs.
I have had no problems whatsoever writing single layer DVDs (even using old Comp USA blanks!) and playing them on aforementioned players.
Anybody have any success writing DL DVDs? If so, what brand of disc did you use? Did you reduce speed to 2x writing? Help - I don't want to create any more coasters!

In windows, I have to click a taskbar icon and cancel the function of a USB device before it can be safely removed. New to Mac OS, and wondered if there is a similar process or whether a flash drive/etc. Can just be unplugged.

I wanted content from some miniDV tapes to be transferred to my computer. I don't have a miniDV camcorder/reader so went to a friend who has it and is using Mac OS X 10.5.8 and does not have machines running Windows at all. I took my miniDV tapes(each an hour long) to him with my external hard drive so that he could copy the content of tapes to the external hard drive. The external hard drive was formatted using NTFS as I was using it on my Win XP. I took it to him and he formatted the external drive using FAT so that his Mac could write to it. Problem was the miniDV tapes of 1 hour content would translate to 16GB or so content and since he formatted the external hard drive using FAT, the tapes are about 3.6GB. I suspect since FAT cannot hold more than 4GB the tapes got clipped. I asked my friend to install [URL] -NTFS 3g so that his Mac can read/write to NTFS. He did that and then tried to format the external drive to OS X Journal Extended mode, but the formatting failed at various times quoting "Unmounting failed".
1. Did what I suggest(have my friend install MAC -NTFS 3g so that his Mac can read/write to NTFS) a proper choice or is there another method which I should have pursued?
2. What could be the reason for Unmounting failed when he tried to format the external drive to OS X Journal Extended mode? Could the hard drive have gone bad(hardware issue) or because he was trying to format a disk having FAT file system to OS X Journal Extended mode there could be issues? What other file system should I ask him to try to format which might work?
3. Are there any other methods we should look into for what I need(digitizing the miniDV tapes to an external hard drive so that I can edit them on my Win XP machine)? I don't know anyone else who has a miniDV camcorder/reader.
4. If he transfers the tapes into the external drive having a OS X Journal Extended mode file system, the way I can read and copy them(miniDV content as AVI files) from the external drive to my Windows machine is using Macdrive [URL] or are there some other better/free utilities available. This is a one time job so if there is a trial version fully functional for 30 days, I can download it and use it..
I'm running Win7 x64 RTM, but I had this problem back when I had Vista too. Macdrive reads and writes to my Mac partition just fine, but for some reason I can't run .exe files that are stored there. Windows gives me some crap about 'windows cannot access *file path here*'. Back when I used XP this wasn't a problem, but for some reason Vista and 7 don't want to run .exe's on my mac partition. For now I've been forced to copy the .exe's from their storage on my Mac drive and paste them to my Windows partition before being able to run them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 with my snow leopard bootcamp on my MBP yesterday and all seems to be running fine and dandy except when Im in windows, I plug in my external hard drive which is formatted to a mac and it makes the noise to show its been plugged in but nothing shows up. I have installed MacDrive on there so I can read HFS formatted disks but the drive just doesnt appear anywhere. I have plugged the same drive into my dell laptop with windows 7 and it appears on there so its not the drive (plus it shows up fine on the mac under SL anyway).

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Win XP box blew last week and we're looking for a computer replacement. Was thinking of iMac higher end i3 21.5" model (due to physical space limitations). This desktop will be used for typical home computer tasks (re: email, internet, minor photos, minor video, minor music, minor web caming, etc. etc.). NO Games - kids have gamining machines for that. If wondering, we have a Windows HP Laptop as well. We use it for portability. Thus, Windows Only applications (like Tax Program) will be used on it. 95% of the time, this desktop is used by my kids - age 9 - 17. Wife does email on it.
For the folks who recently switched from Windows to Apple (re: iMac or MBP), would you do it again?
Note: I've had my fill of Window/Apple comparisons (re Chev vs BMW comparisons). I'm also an MCSE - so I know the Windows platforms better then many. Just want to know if the you'd pick the iMac/MBP platform again?
I have sevral large DV files that I need to move to a PC at a different location. On hand I have a FAT formatted firewire drive, but obviously It can't store files larger than 2 gigs, so I'm looking for the fastest way of splitting these files into chunks, and then re-assembling them on a PC.The options I see so far are using a compression tool which will split at the same time (stuffit, rar, or even zip) (but I'd rather not waste time compressing when it's not nessesary) or using a raw file splitter like Split&Concat, but I don't know if these are cross-platform, or what to use on the PC end to rejoin the files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows 7 using bootcamp and now I want music on both my windows and mac OS's. Now I don't want to have two different music folders, I want both OS's to share the same one. So I linked my windows itunes library folder to my Macintosh HD drive and located my user account, then my music folder. It added all the music files and I can play them, and I don't know yet when I add files if it will add them to both the library's. So I was just wondering if this is safe or something? Since they both have different filesystems FAT and NTFS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need a spreadsheet program that can:
1. Operate cross platform (my IT guys PC, Im Mac)
2. Sort capabilities to five, ideally six, levels
3. Capable of using macros
4. Can convert spreadsheets for an html (online) environment
I founded a national grassroots movement thats gone viral. We list registered supporters on our site, using Google Apps forms, the copy the content into an Excel spreadsheet. A friend out of state (PC user) is able to work magic with macros that magically sorts, fixes, and converts the lists to appear in our online directory (you can see an example at http://www.the350project.net/states/states_a-d.html). I created the graphics; he somehow builds the page using those plus the spreadsheets.
This is something I really need to be able to do on my end, as the owner of the site, but MS took macros out of the Mac version of Office Excel....OpenOffice only sorts three levels, and he says we need at least five....
Since I have no intention of becoming a PC user, I need to find a software program that will work on a Mac and still be able to do all this. I realize many (most?) software programs are capable of opening and saving .xls files, but the multi-level sort, macros, and html are critical to any of this working, according to him.
I just installed windows 7 ultimate on my macbook via bootcamp. I installed all the drivers and everything seems to work perfect besides one thing; I can't connect to the internet with my WiFi. My iPhone has WiFi signal, and if I go back to the mac OS X side, my WiFi has signal. When I'm on windows 7 it doesn't even detect any wireless networks (I have quite a few around the house too.)
