Power Mac G5 :: Display Shows Gray Screen - Fan Runs High Speed ?

Oct 10, 2007

I purchased my PowerMac G5 in 2003 and no problems till now. My problem is that on startup, the display first shows gray screen with a globe in a white box flashing in the center of the screen. This continues for about 90 seconds --- then the globe in box icon changes to a small file folder icon with alternating face/question mark flashing in the file folder. At about the same time, the fan speeds up dramatically. The fan continues to run at this high speed for about 90 additional seconds, then the fan returns to normal speed, and the startup continues normally to the blue screen. Once startup is complete, computer runs okay. The whole process takes about 4 minutes.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - When I Press Power Button, Power Fan Comes On, But No Picture Shows

Feb 10, 2008

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

Power Mac G5 :: Bad Ram Identified By Apple Hardware Test?

After a lot of erratic behavior with my dual 2ghz g5, I ran the apple hardware test. When testing RAM it gives me the following error message each time I run the extended test:

2MEM/1/4:DIMMI/J11

I'm wondering how to interpret this exactly which RAM is bad (more specifically where is it?) I'm wondering if there is a diagram out there so I can relate this an exact location on my computer.

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Downloading Speed Very Slow / Speed Test Shows It Is Fast

Apr 30, 2009

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

Power Mac G5 :: Hardware Test Error Code - 2ATI/1/4: 113-A13601-120

So I've been having problems with video in quicktime. I get green dots and other such errors in the video. When I play the same video in VLC I don't get an error. I was told that this is probably the video card, so I ran the hardware test. I got the error code '2ATI/1/4: 113-A13601-120' I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it actually meant, and whether I'll have to buy a new video card, or if there's some other way to fix the problem.

Is it possible to test a G5 power supply like an ATX power supply, by connecting two pins which would make the fans start ?

OS X :: How To Test A Macbook With Broken Screen

Aug 18, 2010

I just found a working macbook with a broken screen being sold for $60 on craigslist. I asked the seller for specs and she said she doesn't know the details except for the model # (which is A1181). It comes with no power adapter or software. Is there any way I can I test the computer to know if it is worth buying when I get there? I want to make sure it is able to run properly before investing in a screen. I have a 13" macbook. When I was at the apple store today, the employee was able to run diagnostics on my computer with his MBP without having to touch my computer. (Edit: There was a cord running between both computers, and my comp. was running, but everything was being done through his OS). Is there an easy way for me to do the same thing?

IMac PPC :: Test A G5 Logic Board Without Hardware Test?

Jun 25, 2012

My son's 17" imac PPC G5 was not booting up. After a trying a couple of things I got it to boot using Disk Warrior and reparing the file directory. At that time I also ran DW's hardware test which said the drive was fine. My son hard restarted it shortly after I fixed it and it wouldn't start up again. Just a gray screen, no apple logo. When I tried to use DW again it told me there were problems with the hard drive and it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to fix the hard drive in target disk mode using Disk Utiltiy and Drive Genius. No luck. So I pulled a working drive out of my Mac Pro and reformatted it and swapped the internal drive of the iMac with it. There were no DIP switches to set. Started up the imac with a Leopard retail disk thinking I would just install a fresh system onto the replaced internal drive of the iMac. Disk Utility on the leopard disk didn't see the hard drive. Now I'm beginning to think it's a logic board problem but I can't find the original disks to do a Hardware test with. Is there some other way to test a logic board? Or some other idea that I'm not thinking of that could be wrong with the machine?

Power Mac G5 :: 2.0 DP Apple Hardware Test Error "2SVM/1/2: CPU B AD7417 AD3"

Nov 19, 2007

I have an Apple Power Mac G5 Dual Processor model M9747LL/A (Early 2005) which fails the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) v2.5 with the Logic Board error code "2SVM/1/2: CPU B AD74717 AD3". This appears to be a problem with the thermal module voltmeter sensor for CPU B. The problem is, this machine is working just fine. The fans don't run abnormally and everything works. It could be that this failure is real and will eventually lead to other failures later, but I did find another thread in this forum where a user of the same system that had the exact same problem that turned to be a bad copy of the Apple Hardware Test DVD:

[URL] This user was given another copy of AHT that worked fine. I have already reset the NVRAM, PRAM and SMU -- all with no effect. Like the instructions on AHT said, I have removed all peripherals and run the test again, also with no effect. This machine is not under AppleCare and Apple was not all that helpful on the phone. They referred me to an Apple store, where I was told that replacing the CPU would cost "$500 or $600 plus labor", but they did not even write down the error code or check anything specific to my machine.

Does anyone know if there is some way to confirm this is an actual hardware error, as opposed to just some problem with the version of AHT I have?

Intel Mac :: Screen Gone Black - How To Run Apple Hardware Test

May 18, 2012

My early 2008 24" has suddenly developed a problem - screen has gone black (initially it was 'black' with backlight on, now not even a backlight) The machine has Lion installed but it came with 10.5.2. I can access the machine via screen sharing & it all runs fine so I want to determine what is wrong with it. I dropped in my original grey system discs, pressed 'D' on start-up, nothing. It seems Lion no longer supports Hardware Test from discs on older machines. How I can run hardware test on this machine?

Mac Pro :: The Hardware Test Actually Froze In The Middle Of The Ram Test?

Feb 27, 2008

if you recall a thread I started trying to get help on why the Mac Pro was crashing... I finally narrowed it down. After speaking to about 4 different people at apple.... they had me run the Apple Hardware Test off the boot CD.I took out EVERYTHING except the 2nd DVD burner (Apple Branded Superdrive from my old 2.5 Dual G5)... and ran the test. The Hardware Test ACTUALLY FROZE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAM TEST.I thought I had bad aftermarket ram... as it wasn't playing nice with the Apple ram when I added them together.Looks like I had fine aftermarket ram... the Apple ram was bad.I REPLACED the Apple Ram with the Aftermarket Ram... and the Hardware Test completed fine. So, now I'm going to be calling them again in the morning and letting them know what happened. I wonder if they'll just let me RMA the bad ram, or if I'm going to have to lug this dang thing down to an apple store.I WONT BE HAPPY IF I HAVE TO DO THAT.Oh, and no more lockups since switching out the ram... and all the other quirks (not able to burn CDs in Windows, sloooow Internet page draws, etc...) are all but gone now.

IMac :: FireWire Fried By Power Cut - System Profiler Shows No Awareness?

Dec 20, 2009

Someone switched off the power to my iMac the other day. Since I've rebooted:a] System Profiler shows no awareness of FireWire ("Unable to list FireWire devices" in red) b] Every boot takes about five minutes, 3+ of which seems to be spent waiting for a response from the FireWire socket (the logs show a 3-minute gap followed by a line that goes something like this:"/usr/lib/exec/hidd: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet")
c] if it's idle long enough to go to sleep, it goes into a kernel panic (the last line in the log before the panic says"kernel[0]: IOPMSlotsMacRISC4::determineSleepSupport has canSleep true")b] looks connected to a], but I can't see any connection with c] (apart from the reference to IO).

OS X :: Graphics Card Not Picked Up By Hardware Test / Parts Of Screen Starts Going Black

Apr 15, 2010

I've got a 2007 Macbook Pro. It's on its second graphics card (8600M GT), the first one failed on me a year ago. OS X 10.5.7, all firmware updates installed.

I think I have a new graphics card issue, but I can't prove it. In Front Row, after 10-20 minutes, often parts of the screen will start going black. Then it freezes. Sound works fine. It doesn't look like the same kind of wild distortion that I got when my GPU failed the first time, though, it just looks like things have been rendered incorrectly.

When Front Row finally quits, I've had black and white bars across my menu bar a couple of times. Once the computer then totally locked up and I had to reboot.

In Windows XP in boot camp, things are worse. I only use boot camp for games, since they use a lot of graphical power, it made sense that the problems happen there more often. After 15-20 minutes, the screen will start stuttering, then the keyboard/mouse will stop responding. The sound will hiccup a few times too. That lasts about 10 seconds, then everything returns to normal for a while (as little as 10 seconds, or as long as 5 minutes.)

The Apple Hardware Test (short and extended) shows no trouble. Techtool Pro shows no trouble. I ran the very thorough memtest86+, and it showed no memory trouble.

Can anybody give me any tips on definitively diagnosing this problem? Is there any kind of really intensive hardware test I can get (a live CD maybe)?

Second question, has anybody heard of Apple replacing a laptop that has had many faults with a brand new unit?

MacBook Pro :: Apple Hardware Test Freezes, "one Second" Into The Test?

Apr 9, 2012

I have a 17" unibody MBP (early 2009, specs below). It was running hotter than usual the other day, so I F2 booted into AHT to run a diagnostic. The status box within AHT showed 1 second into the 1st pass, and never got beyond that. Several seconds after that status message was displayed, the cursor froze. The time counter never advanced after that, and although I waited a long time, nothing happened. The test froze.

I've tried it several times more. It once worked, but every other time has frozen. Checking the "extended test" box, or trying to run in loop mode has made no difference - still freezes at "1 second".

I've had this machine for 3 years, OS's Leopard through Lion, and this has never happened before. I last ran a test, successfully, in January. I've not changed any components or suffered any damage since then. Memtest (ver 4.22) says my RAM is fine. (I ran this because the first portion of the AHT is the RAM component.) Aside from the aforementioned overheating episode, which disappeared, my machine's been fine.
