MacBook Pro :: "WIFI" Very Slow, Speed Test Shows It Is Fast?
Feb 18, 2010
I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs.
I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful. Any ideas?
Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I'm not sure if many others have found this problem but my internet has been suffering recently.
I took a speed test on speedtest.net which stated that my download speed was 9.7mbps which is what I'm paying for, but still my browsing speed is ridiculously slow on all websites.
I've tried using firefox and chrome but they all seem to be having the same problem.
I am connected by ethernet as airport has full connection but can't seem to load anything. I have also tried to configure my ethernet connection manually as i read that this would help the issue.
I recently purchased my first Mac computer, a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I receive free internet included in my apartment rent, and I don't use a router, instead I simply plug into the wall. I previously used a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista and there was no problems. I am not very knowledgeable about computers really, especially when it comes to the internet. I need advice on how to speed my downloads, but speak to me like you would 2 y/o.
I can't seem to find anything that applies to me or I can understand. I'm currently using Transmission for torrents and Safari for browsing, but my general internet connection outside of downloads seems to be fine.
i downloaded about 3.1 gbs of music onto it and it was working ok, well now that i removed everything off the internal memory its running so slow!! my safari got updated and everytime i go to a website is see that blue bar lag to the other end ,i bought a 1tb external HD to keep memory free in the macbook to keep it from slowing down but its still slow .i am really considering selling this and getting an hp computer if i cant fix this, cause i paid nearly 2k dollars for the laptop
I think there's something wrong with my Mac. The surfing speed for web pages can be extremely slow, even when I checked bittorrent download speeds to be above 25kbps. Even for webpages like major sites like amazon.com and flickr. Any ideas if there's any setting I need to tweak. I've tried different browsers and it's still the same.
Here are some extra info: - Max possible download speed 800kbps - Torrenting and downloading at same time. I download small items so torrent speed is typically around 25kbps - One other user in network. I'm using WiFi on a Buffalo router, and cable modem. Problem starts after surfing for a while. Maybe 10-20 minutes after logging into the network.
My client is a trader buys the best of everything. He is recently experiencing crazy slow page display for almost all websites. When I run speed tests speakeasy.net, his speeds are reported "blazing" Anybody got any ideas?

recently I bought WD6400AAKS hard drive. I made to partitions (1st for OS and applications, 2nd one for photo files). I also did fresh OS install and loaded basic applications. Strangely I didn't notice any speed boost while booting and to be honest I feel like all applications (photoshop for example) are also starting much slower than on original hdd.
Is there any way to test hard drive if it performs as it should be? I also have 2 more older drives installed. is it possible that one of them would slow the system down?
I have two Macs that I use in my apartment on the same WiFi network. The network is made with my Apple Airport Extreme router. The problem is, on the iMac (2009), internet works perfectly. I checked on speedtest, it is just as it should be! On the Macbook Pro (2006), it is horrible. It may take up to half an hour to load a 4 minute YouTube video, a minute to load a page, etc. The WiFi connection on both is 4/4. I have done a software update for both of them recently.
I'm facing a very misterious issue with my internet connection, using a Time Capsule; If I use a network cable to connect to the Time Capsule, the connection to the internet is very slow (Maxes at 2mbit, never more). If use a wifi connection to connect to the same Time Capsule, internet is flawlessly fast, reaching well over 80Mbit.
I checked and the ip is always the same, the downloads are the same, at the same time. Even trying with 2 computers (a Macbook and an iMac) (one over wifi, one on ethernet cable) the one using wifi can download stuff way faster. If I switch connections the one using wifi is always faster.
I use DHCP for both ethernet and wifi on the same local network, all the machines can see each other, it's just the internet connection that becomes so slow when using ethernet. The local network as as fast as a gigabit connection allows. The Time Capsule has the latest firmware installed, and has no problems at all besides this internet issue.
i'm currently using the linksys w610n router thru wifi, i'm experiencing very slow internet speed on pages loading on safari but when i tried to download files on igetter, it goes on full speed
around my house, even right next to my wireless router, I have a pretty slow WiFi speed - normally my downloads are under 20kbs a second (I have a hard time even watching YouTube videos). When I plug my laptop into an ethernet port, it greatly increases and I sometimes see speeds above 100kbs. I'm using a really cheap router, but I've used other routers with the same results.
i have a 1.5 Mbps AT&T DSL connection, and multiple speed tests show a download speed of 1.2 Mbps (and 200 Kbps upload). when i download files, such as software updates from Apple, various podcasts, and even Silverlight from Microshaft, the speed is always between 140 - 160 Kbps. i contacted AT&T, and the rep said it was because of buffering by the servers i was receiving the files from. is this a reasonable explanation? is this an accurate use of the term "buffering"?
After my MaBook Pro2,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - 2,33 GHz & 2 GB Memory - with 10.6.8. Freeze on startup every time, only running in "Save Boot" mode. I choose do perform a hardware test with the version 3A116 on a earlier Mac OS Install Disk. The test (3 times) shows an error code (after 1. test I switched memory cards), I am not able to interpret this: 4SNS / 1 / 400 000 00 : TBOT
Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 17"Display Intel core 2 Duo 2.33GHz
I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.
It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.
If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.
Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?
Pressing the power button on the main unit, the button lights, then flashes, long-short, long-short, etc.Nothing else happens - no screen, no chime, no disk activity. can I get this (and other) Power-on Self Test (POST) information?
I have a Time Capsule as my main router with a 802.11n (b/g compatible) network, with an Airport Express (802.11g) extending it. I have AT&T Elite DSL ("up to 6 Mbps") and according to both 2wire.com and speedtest.net, I'm getting somewhere in the neighborhood of 5.1 Mbps. When I hook my DSL directly into my computer via ethernet, I get the same results. I ran a few "real world" tests and found that the results I got were pretty accurate. I downloaded a 4.8 MB file in about 7 seconds and a 17.8 MB file in about 30 seconds. So my question is...at what speed does wireless n come into play? I'm getting close to the highest speed AT&T offers on a network that is, for all intents and purposes, a g network.

I have a 2008 2,4 MBP and I have a problem with it. I was using snow leopard and everything was going fine for a few months. Then suddenly, it froze on the desktop at the opening. After few minutes, and command+ctrl+Shift+esc, and a few prayers it sometimes came ok.
I got tired of that and decided to format my hard drive and reinstall osx. I had to do it 3 times before it worked. Then I installed the updates and BANG! New problem! Now it was booting for 6 minutes before I see the desktop.
Been months and issue is still the same, why does my desktop work blazing fast online from browsing to loading streaming videos etc. And my Macbook Pro can't, its a little slower browsing online which I can put up with but youtube, rottentomatoes, basically any streaming type site sucks. And it doesn't matter whether it's by wireless or connected directly by ethernet. It just buffers like every 15 seconds (does the samething on Safari and Chrome). I mean before my 4 year old HP laptop died it could load videos on those same sites almost instantly with no buffering.
I have a friend with an Imac that does the same thing, and a buddy brought over his MBP 15 and same thing happened like at his house, and I showed him how fast the desktop is in comparison.
I just moved to a new condo, have high speed internet from Comcast, and its def not the internet since the desktop works perfect. Any ideas on what to do as I use this MBP more being I carry it around the place and its so irritating knowing how quicker my desktop is, and that desktop is 2 years old.
I've tried different DNS etc and that helped a little bit (was a lot worse before) but still sucks, this is what I have inputted from this forum under DNS servers: 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4
When watching Videos on youtube longer then 10 min my 1.6/80 MBA slows down to a crawl, its driving me bananas for $2k Canadian this thing should work like a charm.
My Ipod Touch has no problems with the same videos on Youtube.
I have an iMac 10.3.9. Every time I try to burn a disk on iTunes it tells me that my burn speed is too fast-even at 1x. I have run "fsck, onyX, Macjanitor, repaired permissions in utilities, and even down loaded BurnX. Nothing works! I have also tried various CD'S.

But if i come to download something on my Mac or Xbox, it is slow as fudge :P
I am downloading the update for BFBC 2 on xbox atm, and it has taken me half an hour to do 14% and it took my mate (who lives about 10 min walk away from me) about 20 mins to complete the whole thing...
I'm looking for an app for my mac which can test my ADSL download speed automtically at regular intervals through the day and log the results for me to look over later.
I bought a new Sandisk Extreme SSD 240GB and installed it. In System Information, the Link Speed is shown as 3 Gigabit but the Negotiated Link Speed is only 1.5 Gigabit. What's the difference between the two values? And why is the Negotiated Link Speed is only 1.5 Gigabit?
