Hardware :: Migrating Data From Drobo To External Drive?

Sep 14, 2010

I originally formated my Drobo to 2TBs which I've now outgrown and need to reformat to avoid having two partitions. That requires that I xfer the data on a Drobo to another HD. Right now I have 1.2TB of data on the Drobo. I'm pretty a 1.5TB drive will be able to handle this, but not 100%. Will it once it's formatted? Next question: is migrating data from a Drobo to an ext. drive as easy as using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and cloning the Drobo and then using CCC/SD again to send the data back to the Drobo? Do these apps see the Drobo as one drive and Drobo does the rest, as it normally does?

ITunes For Mac :: Migrating Library With External Drive To New Machine?

Jun 5, 2014

for capacity reasons, i currently run itunes on an aging macbook pro with media stored on an external hard drive. how can i transfer my library to a new macbook air and keep the media as-is on the external? the library size is still too large to keep on the computer itself and i'm actually content with this setup. i'm trying not to affect the song ratings, playlists, apps, podcasts, settings, etc..

the macbook pro is currently running snow leopard, while the air is up-to-date with mavericks, if that makes a difference.

both machines are running the latest version of itunes (11.2.something-something).

Hardware :: Used Drobo With Win NTFS Now Have A Mac... How To Switch Over Data

Oct 2, 2009

I formatted my Drobo with NTFS and used to use Bootcamp. Now I got rid of Windows and only use my Mac running OSX 10.6. How do I transfer all my data from my Drobo and reformat to HFS? If I reformat to HFS I will lose all my data on the existing drives... I basically want to be able to access and write to the Drobo as I did with Windows before, with the data intact.

OS X :: Best Option For Migrating Data From PC To Mac?

Nov 11, 2009

I never thought I'd say it, but after decades of PC use I am finally seriously considering switching to the world of Mac, which would entail a pretty massive data migration. Anyone know if there's a way to just link up my ATA hard drive from my PC to a Mac via USB or firewire or something, and just transfer the data (word docs, photos, music - obviously not apps) to the hypothetical new Mac? That would be a heck of a lot easier than burning a jillion CDs in order to transfer the data, which is my current best option.

Also, and this is more obscure, and might not even be possible, but I figure I'd ask - I've been using Eudora as a mail client for years (really old version, 3.0, still works under XP believe it or not). I would love to be able to migrate my mail. Eudora 3.0 stores the mail as text in these files marked ".mbx", but of course, it's not that simple, because to actually index them, the app has to refer to corresponding "table of contents" files with a ".toc" extension. I could transfer the .mbx files to a new mac easily enough - I mean, they're just text - but it would be lovely, so lovely, to keep the indexing. Anyone know of a converter out there that could carry that all over into a mail client, any mail client, for Mac OS?

MacBook Pro :: Migrating Data From HDD To SSD?

Jun 21, 2012

One of these days, I may purchase a Crucial SSD (512GB).

I need to know how to copy the contents of my current factory HDD (seagate 5400rpm 500GB) to the Crucial SSD. Note that they are of different sizes.

What I have:

- Carbon Copy Cleaner

- Time Machine (with time capsule)

- Spare 750GB external HDD

Which is the fastest, safest, and easiest way to accomplish this task? Again, the drives are of different sizes, and only one can be in the machine at a time.

IMac :: Scratch Space / External FW800 HDD / DROBO?

Aug 13, 2010

My new 27" i7 is supposed to be delivered next week, got the SATA cables for installing my own SSD, but am a bit doubtful as to where placing my Scratch space. So, I will end up with an iMac with two internal drives (SSD + HDD).OS, System Library and Applications go to the internal SSD (120GB).

As I will be using FCS (besides CS package and other smaller programms) I would like to set up a dedicated Scratch drive for it.

Which of the following options would you go for, and why?:

1: install scratch space on the internal HDD together with all the other data (pics, music, videos - space is not the issue with a 2TB drive). Would a partition be advisable in this case, since I heard that partitioning slows a disc down considerably.

2: install scratch space on the internal HDD (scratch only), and all other files (pics/music/video) on an external FW800 HDD.

3: install scratch space on the external FW800 HDD (all other files on the internal HDD like usual).

4: use an external RAID backup as scratch space as well (something like the Drobo) with a FW800 connection.

I was looking for feedback on using the Drobo not only as a backup, but also as a scratch - some people found it great working, others not so much...I'd like to find out, if that has to do with the FW800 bottleneck, or if a Drobo scratch is even slower than an external FW800 HDD would be. I know that eSata would be faster, but that is currently out of reach (besides the OWC mod.).

MacBook Pro :: Migrating Data And Files To New Computer

Oct 12, 2009

Here is what I have: Macbook Pro - utilizing around 80GB of HDD. I have a large iTunes library, a small amount of Word and Excel files, very few applications (VLC, Microsoft Office, Transmission, Toast, etc.), and a large iPhoto library. I have everything backed up on a Western Digital external hard drive using Time Machine. Over the past two years, I have accumulated a lot of files and extensions that I don't need or want. I am soon going to trade for either a 15-inch MBP or an iMac. Rather than restore everything on the new machine using my Time Machine back up, I just want to start with a brand new computer. How do I get single applications from my external hard drive to the new computer? For example, I want MS Office on the new one. How do I get it over without reinstalling with the disc?

OS X :: Recover Data Fom Hard Drive / External Drive Stopped Mounting

Sep 4, 2009

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!

MacBook Pro :: Transferring Email - Migrating Data (Stuck)

Mar 31, 2012

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro from my very Old MacBook, but it was running latest version of Snow leopard. I first tried the set up assistant to transfer all my Information from Time Machine Back up to New MacBook pro. This seemed to work fine except Mail.

Mail launches says that it is transferring my e-mails (11,000+) this runs OK, then it says that I am going to be upgraded and the little box says "Migrating data", this just runs and runs and basically nothing happens and I can't run Mail.

My iCloud is configured and this is all working from the web, also it is working fine on my iPhone 4s. I have also tried creating a Test account deleting the origional transferred account (my old Computer) then instead of using the Wizard I used the Migration assistant. This has basically done the same as the above.

Mac Pro :: 64bit Kernel With Drobo Recommendation For High Capacity External Storage?

Dec 4, 2010

I currently have external storage devices by DataRobotics - 2 DroboPro and 1 DroboElite. I bought the new MacPro 2 months ago and have been having problems with the Drobo devices disconnecting constantly. After a lot of diagnostics including Apple replacing the logic board in my MacPro, it was identified that the issue was with the iSCSI initiator that DataRobotics uses. It is not 64bit kernal compatible and as a result, the drives disconnect randomly especially when moving data from one external drive to the other. I am forced to boot the MacPro in 32bit kernel mode for the drives to work properly. DataRobotics is not committing to fixing the 64bit kernel issue so I'm now looking to replace this technology.

I found some interesting technology by Netgear and was considering buying their product, however, I had the worst experience ever with dealing with pre-sales & technical support department, after dealing with 4 different individuals, I concluded that they have no clue about their own products, the staff is so junior, it's as if I called a completely different company when talking about their own product. I am therefore going to stay away from that company.

OS X :: Cannot Copy Data To External USB Hard Drive

Aug 17, 2009

Macbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.

The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.

Software :: Data Corruption On External Drive?

May 20, 2009

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio eddition 750Gb plugged, via USB, into a MacMini (10.5.6). I store my whole music collection (~100Gb) on this drive, and a little while back, started to have trouble playing certain songs from within iTunes. iTunes would not error, it would just refuse to play the track. It then refused to play a long mix, which I had listened to from the very same source the previous day. I copied the same mix back from my laptop and diff'd the two. They where indeed different. If I run "file" on them both, sure enough, the working one reports "MP3 blah blah ...", the broken one "data". I have ran a find over the entire livrary and discovered that about 20% of the tracks are now reported to be "data". Whats more, the corrupted tracks seem to be in groups (entire albums or several albums by same artist etc.).

I'm assuming this is a hard drive fault, but I have run every check in both "Disk Utility" and "Diskwarrior", and no problems are reported.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be going on here, or offer me any advice on how to debug further?

OS X :: Cannot See Files On External Hard Drive (Data Disappeared)

Sep 21, 2010

I am trying to use my hard drive I have had for a couple years to back up some files on my computer, but the data I had stored on there already has disappeared. I previously had the hard drive connected to the Time Machine application, but have not used it in over a year when I received an error message trying to backup my computer using that application.

I know the data I already had on there is still on the hard drive because nearly half of the space on the drive is used up, but when I plug the hard drive in to my computer and open it there are no files to be found. I want to back up the current files on my computer, but I don't want to risk losing what I already had on the hard drive, so is there any way I can find and access the old files again?

I'll include my hardware information on here in case that helps to find a solution:
2006 MacBook Pro 15"
Intel Core Duo
Mac OS X 10.5.8
1TB Western Digital My Book: Studio Edition II
Dual-drive Storage System with RAID
