OS X Mavericks :: Migrating Data Stuck On Mail
Jun 19, 2014
I have just upgraded to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro. After starting mail it first says that it is "optimizing my database", soon after it starts "migrating data" and it never stops to do so.

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro from my very Old MacBook, but it was running latest version of Snow leopard. I first tried the set up assistant to transfer all my Information from Time Machine Back up to New MacBook pro. This seemed to work fine except Mail.
Mail launches says that it is transferring my e-mails (11,000+) this runs OK, then it says that I am going to be upgraded and the little box says "Migrating data", this just runs and runs and basically nothing happens and I can't run Mail.
My iCloud is configured and this is all working from the web, also it is working fine on my iPhone 4s. I have also tried creating a Test account deleting the origional transferred account (my old Computer) then instead of using the Wizard I used the Migration assistant. This has basically done the same as the above.

I never thought I'd say it, but after decades of PC use I am finally seriously considering switching to the world of Mac, which would entail a pretty massive data migration. Anyone know if there's a way to just link up my ATA hard drive from my PC to a Mac via USB or firewire or something, and just transfer the data (word docs, photos, music - obviously not apps) to the hypothetical new Mac? That would be a heck of a lot easier than burning a jillion CDs in order to transfer the data, which is my current best option.
Also, and this is more obscure, and might not even be possible, but I figure I'd ask - I've been using Eudora as a mail client for years (really old version, 3.0, still works under XP believe it or not). I would love to be able to migrate my mail. Eudora 3.0 stores the mail as text in these files marked ".mbx", but of course, it's not that simple, because to actually index them, the app has to refer to corresponding "table of contents" files with a ".toc" extension. I could transfer the .mbx files to a new mac easily enough - I mean, they're just text - but it would be lovely, so lovely, to keep the indexing. Anyone know of a converter out there that could carry that all over into a mail client, any mail client, for Mac OS?

One of these days, I may purchase a Crucial SSD (512GB).
I need to know how to copy the contents of my current factory HDD (seagate 5400rpm 500GB) to the Crucial SSD. Note that they are of different sizes.
What I have:
- Carbon Copy Cleaner
- Time Machine (with time capsule)
- Spare 750GB external HDD
Which is the fastest, safest, and easiest way to accomplish this task? Again, the drives are of different sizes, and only one can be in the machine at a time.

I have a new MacBook Pro and need to move my data from my old MacBook Pro to the new one.
I will keep using the old one but want to move all the data, except my Aperture/iPhoto library - can I do this?
Also, what is the best way to move the data - via a Time Machine back up or a cable?

Here is what I have: Macbook Pro - utilizing around 80GB of HDD. I have a large iTunes library, a small amount of Word and Excel files, very few applications (VLC, Microsoft Office, Transmission, Toast, etc.), and a large iPhoto library. I have everything backed up on a Western Digital external hard drive using Time Machine. Over the past two years, I have accumulated a lot of files and extensions that I don't need or want. I am soon going to trade for either a 15-inch MBP or an iMac. Rather than restore everything on the new machine using my Time Machine back up, I just want to start with a brand new computer. How do I get single applications from my external hard drive to the new computer? For example, I want MS Office on the new one. How do I get it over without reinstalling with the disc?

I originally formated my Drobo to 2TBs which I've now outgrown and need to reformat to avoid having two partitions. That requires that I xfer the data on a Drobo to another HD. Right now I have 1.2TB of data on the Drobo. I'm pretty a 1.5TB drive will be able to handle this, but not 100%. Will it once it's formatted? Next question: is migrating data from a Drobo to an ext. drive as easy as using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and cloning the Drobo and then using CCC/SD again to send the data back to the Drobo? Do these apps see the Drobo as one drive and Drobo does the rest, as it normally does?

Is migrating from one computer to another equal to merging the 2 computers or is it only transferring the old one (10.6.8) to the new one (10.9.3) ?

I am about to purchase a new iMac. How do I go about migrating my programs and files from my old iMac to my new one using Mavericks. Let the Apple Store do it? Use the Cloud? I am running OS X Version 10.9.3. I found information on the apple.com site about using Mountain Lion and earlier operating systems, but not Mavericks.

I've recently installed leopard on my macbook and I'd like to migrate from thunderbird to mail so that my contacts and all can be synced from one application to another. That's the beauty of mac osx afterall.
Alright, So I launched mail, clicked import from thunderbird and everything seemed to be running smoothly and when all my mails finished importing, I did a quick check on the mails and. The mails weren't properly sorted into the different folders and I had tons of mail missing! Does anyone here have any experience with migrating from thunderbird to mail and faced these problems during their migration? If I did it manually, would it be better? Kindly advise.
Secondly, I used to run filters on my mail such that my mail will get sorted out into different folders. It's really handy because it keeps my mails organised and stuff. How does mail do this? Is it the smart mailbox that I see?

Just used migration assistant to switch from an older iMac to a new iMac and now I have two admin accounts under Users & Groups. My name is slightly different on the two admin accounts. When I switch to the other admin account it appears the files are from ~2010. This admin account is greyed out, so I cannot seem to remove it. Is it taking up space? Will it create a problem?

I just bought a new Rev A. Macbook Air for my GF. I don't have it yet. Currently she has a Powerbook 12" running Tiger. She will want to do some very light file transfers. Being the resident geek, I am in charge of this. I don't see any real need to bother with migration assistant. Tranferrring her music, bookmarks, and address book are no issue for me. She barely has any apps worth transferring.
My only real concern is about mail, coming from Tiger to Leopard, and the fact that she uses a mix of email sources...MobileMe, Gmail, etc. Setting up the accounts is not a problem, but I'm wondering about the actual message files on her Powerbook. After I set up her main user account on the MBA, can I just replace the mail folder in her home folder with the mail folder from her Powerbook? Some of the messages are IMAP, and some are POP accounts which she doesn't want to lose. I did this very thing when I got a new desktop, but it was a Tiger - to - Tiger transfer, so I just want to check if there are any issues doing this from Tiger to Leo

I upgraded to Leopard quite some time ago and do not recall having any problems. I bought OS X Leopard to upgrade my parents' computers this weekend (got a good deal :-) and in both cases, their Mail did not work following the upgrade. I thought this was odd since I've never had problems upgrading OS X in the past. I also found out today at work that a friend of mine just picked up a new Mac Mini this weekend and migrated from his old iMac (running Tiger) and experienced a similar problem so perhaps there is a problem upgrading to more recent versions of Leopard. I looked in the forums but did not readily find an answer to this problem. I tried a few things, including putting aside the preferences file (plist) for mail without success.
The symptoms:
Mail comes up for the first time after the upgrade or migration from another computer and says the conversion of the mail database to the new Mail format is complete, but the message window does not open automatically and when you open it, it does not show any of your old messages. The Mail app also does not actually get mail when you ask it to, just kind of sits there. I let it go for quite a while but nothing different happened. "Quit" does not quit it, you have to force quit it.
Here's what I did to get my parents' computers fixed up:
1. Make sure Mail is not running. Force Quit if you have to.
2. Go into you <home>/Library folder.
3. Rename the "Mail" folder to something else (I used "Mail.old")
4. Start Mail.app. This time Mail will get mail from your mail server(s) but still will not show any old mail messages.
5. If any of the new incoming mail is important to you, save (export) it out somewhere.
6. Quit mail. A normal quit should work now.
7. Go into your <home>/Library folder again.
8. Delete the new "Mail" folder (do not delete the one you renamed earlier).
9. Rename the folder you renamed in step 3 ("Mail.old") back to "Mail".
10. Re-start Mail.app. Your old messages should be in your inbox and you should be able to send/receive mail.
That's it. That fixed it for 3 user accounts used in both of my parents' iMacs.

From what I can figure out, MobileMe stores my emails on the server. Does that mean I don't have a copy of my emails on my hard drive even though I check email using the Mail application on my MacBook Pro? In the sidebar of Mail I notice there's a section called "On My Mac" with a folder called "Local Backup" with a bunch (but not all) of the same folders that are under ".Mac Account". The most recent email in these folders is from 2010. I have no idea how this folder got there or if it's even needed.Am I obsessing over this for nothing? I feel like I should have a backup of my emails after reading that once I've migrated to iCloud, I'm cut off of MobileMe. I need to delete my MobileMe account from my iPhone before migrating to resolve an Address Book historical sync problem. That means the only copy of my emails will be on MobileMe which I won't be able to get to. Unless of course, Mail saves them somewhere on my hard drive.

I just transferred a group of users from the Local directory to the LDAP directory. There directories are in place and haven't changed, and neither has the size of the email folders in the Library->Server->Mail->Data folder. But now, there are no messages in the directories, including the Inbox. It's empty except for a single message that says "no subject" and has no content.

I have an HP 8000 hooked up with a USB cable. I've tried disconnecting everything, restarting, trying different ports, nothing is working. I also tried resetting the print system in system prefs, reinstalling the drivers as well. When I try to print the printer just sits there. Its always stuck on sending print data. I don't use this printer often but it used to work and I would get this problem once or twice every few months. I solved it just by restarting but now it wont go away.

If I make a mistake and I can't open OS X. In windows I think you can start in safe mode and undo the mistake? I was installing UBUNTU on an external disk, but for some reason my original OS X is not working and was affected. Disc Utility can see the disk, repair permissions and check hard drive ok. But I can still not boot from it. Now I try DiskWarrior but for the last 15 min it has been stuck on "Locating directory data" so I guess some thing is wrong. I did not try any other apps, for fixing broken hard drives yet. If Disk Warrior don't work I will try TechTool and Genius. Then it's no more options then to reinstall.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS Lion (10.7.3) and in the last two weeks I face the following problem with the Mail application and my Yahoo mail account: although the account appears in the side bar of the application and it will search for new messages when I launch the Mail app, it doesn't load any messages and I also realised that all Mailboxes of the named account are blank! The messages appear normally when I reach my account through the Yahoo page! I tried to remove and re-import the account in the Mail app, but it just worked for two days and now the Mailboxes are blank again! I have no problems with the other two mail accounts I reach through the same application (both POP accounts).

I updated my 15" MBP (MD 104) to the latest version of OS X and while restarting, it got stuck and has not recovered for quite a while. It shows my wallpaper and even if I close the lid, the screen refuses to turn off. I cannot access anything as it is stuck in the phasing out stage so I see my wallpaper as a blur.when the battery finally runs out, it will have to shut down which I cannot do right now despite holding down the power button for quite a while.

My late 2008 macbook pro 2.4 ghz 4gb Ram 250 gb HD has mavericks on it im not sure exactly which version but I know its mavericks. When I boot it sticks on the apple logo with spinning wheel. When I boot into OSX utilities I get stuck. I can move the mouse but cant click on anything. Hitting the up and down keys lets me highlight the 4 available options which are "restore from time machine backup" + " reinstall osx" + "get support online" + "disk utility" I cannot choose any of these options no matter what buttons I press or how many times I try to click on it. Press up or down and I can change what is highlighted between the 4 choices immediately.
