So my new Mini 2.23 arrived today and I'm trying to think of how I'm going to go about restoring the data from the old Mini. I've sold my old Mini, but used SuperDuper to backup to external drive. I have a MBP I can use if necessary.
View 7 RepliesBasically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

The hard drive on my old Power Mac G4 recently failed and I lost all my data. I have I backup of my Tiger installation, but no way to restore it - I have no other Mac computers, just Windows ones. I also don't have any OS X installation discs. Is there any way I could format and restore the files to my hard drive from Windows?

Except for the wireless routing capabilities, is it possible to use a mac mini as a Time Capsule to backup data from my other macbooks wirelessly?
All the macs will be hooked to the same wireless network FYI.Do I need any specific software to do that? Obviously I will be adding an external hard drive to the mac mini to support more storage space.
Okay I've had it with VMware Fusion 3, tried Parallels. The graphics capabilities are poor for my standard of work (we use 3DS Max and Maya for intensive modelling during studies). I know my graphics card is quite outdated (ATI X1600) but a lot of the graphics-intensive apps on the Mac side run very smooth.
So I'm going down the Boot Camp route since graphics-wise, it'll use the actual X1600 instead of some virtual one. It's telling me that I need to reformat into Mac OS Journaled or something, and some basic research tells me the only way to achieve this is a fresh install.
My question is, if I perform a Time machine backup onto my external drive, will it restore the applications/settings/files completely how they were, after I reinstall OS X?
I just wanted to let people know about an experience I had the other day. After using my Powerbook G4 for about 4 years with some files encrypted with File Vault my Mac suddenly refused to let me log into my user account. I took the Mac to an authorized Apple repairer and was told that a file in File Vault had become corrupted and infected the rest of my hard drive. I lost all my files and documents, photos, music - the lot. When it happens, all you get from Apple is "Sorry about that, but there is nothing we can do - You should have backed up all your files".
I'd just like to warn people not to use File Vault.
I have a question about upgrading the harddisk on my unibody macbook (last year's model). I have done a time machine backup and the macbook is running snow leopard. However, I currently don't have the snow leopard DVD with me, only the leopard DVD that came with the macbook. Can I still do the hard disk upgrade? In other words, can I boot with the leopard DVD, and restore back to snow leopard via time machine or do I need the snow leopard dvd?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Time Machine external drive is flaky so I'm replacing it. What I did was copy my backups folder to my iMac's main drive temporarily because I was unsure of the process. Will I be able to move that folder to the new drive and restore Time Machine or not? If there's another process, please advise me. I don't trust the old drive another day, its working intermittently and making clicking noises of death for a week now. BTW, how many are using USB vs FireWire for a Time Machine Backup Drive. Would a FW (for whatever reason) drive be more reliable than a USB one? Or vice versa?

What are my options for getting around this problem? I have VMware fusion but I cannot easily see my external drive in XP. I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?

I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it?

When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?

I have a Mac Mini 1.83 Ghz running 10.6.4 that I backup to a 1TB Newer Technologies dedicated drive that will not appear on desktop or finder yet occasionally it backs up the system but not always as scheduled. At first I thought it was a drive issue so the retailer replaced the 1TB drive only with the same results. I have it connected via USB.
