I had achived data from another computer (windows platform) and I decided to back up my data of my mac book from using time machine. After I did that I lost all the data I had before. how do I restore the old data back I had in it?

I tried to install Ubuntu (don't ask me why) onto my G5 dual core 2.5 Ghz PowerPC and after the installation not working as I had hoped (it worked fine on my netbook btw) I switched off the mac using a hard-shutdown from the power button as the whole system became completely unresponsive. I then tried to reboot and found that on my reboot rather than booting into the user screen as per usual I got the dreaded "circle with a cross through it". After fiddling about with a hell of alot of boot options I managed to get into the open firmware (option,o,f) terminal style screen up. from this screen it would seem that on my internal hard drive that pretty much all of my files are still on the hard drive. As I couldn't open them from the open firmware I was then told by a friend that I could run disk utility from the install cd provided with mac os x and I managed to find my internal hard drive using disk utility.
It seems as though during the ubuntu install I've deleted all partitions on the hard drive and therefore on the "partition" section under "current" it has no partitions set up and I have the option to set one up. It also gives me various different formating options; Mac os x Extended, Mac os x Extended (journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive journalled), Mac os x Extended (Case sensitive), unix file system and free space. I think it was originally on Mac os x Extended (journaled) but I'm not certain. Before I hit that re-partition button do u think that this is the right thing to do and if so which formatting option should I use? Presuming that the re-partitioning goes well, will I then have to re-install os x? Also will I loose all the data on the hard drive? Although I have the vast majority backed up there are still a few odd files that I wouldn't mind keeping if at all possible and obviously I didn't think to back up those hundreds of apps I've acquired over the years.

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.
Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!
Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMacbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.
The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.
I am trying to use my hard drive I have had for a couple years to back up some files on my computer, but the data I had stored on there already has disappeared. I previously had the hard drive connected to the Time Machine application, but have not used it in over a year when I received an error message trying to backup my computer using that application.
I know the data I already had on there is still on the hard drive because nearly half of the space on the drive is used up, but when I plug the hard drive in to my computer and open it there are no files to be found. I want to back up the current files on my computer, but I don't want to risk losing what I already had on the hard drive, so is there any way I can find and access the old files again?

Our old Toshiba External Hard drive has failed ( approximately 3 years old ). It powers on and the blue light comes on, but the fans don't spin and you can't see it in the finder or on my computer ( we tried on both PC and Mac ).

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. I forced the computer off while the drive was still running and now when I try to mount it it, every computer tells me that the drive I inserted is not readable, and it gives me the option to initialize, ignore, or eject. How do I partition my external hard drive without losing the data already on it? I've been using it with Time Machine on my old computer, but want to use it as a regular drag-and-drop type back up on my new computer. I have a new mac mini and a vista pc on the same network. I want to have my pictures, videos and itunes library on a time capsule so I can access them with my mac and pc. I will not be using time capsule as a backup drive. What I want to know is if I can use an external HD to backup my time capsule content. Would it be better to plug the drive to the capsule with usb or to the mac with fw800? The reason I want a time capsule and not a nas is because time capsule is a router at the same time, which means I save space on my desk and dont have to mess around with different components for my network to work fast.

I have an external hard drive that I was previously using on PC, having attempted to use it on a Mac, it will not write to it. I've found that I have to format to FAT32, which I think i can just about manage (yes, im a girl) but my concern is, if i format through the MAC, will i then lose what's on the hard disk as the tab says 'erase'? When I ejected the WD external hard drive the trash bin no longer displayed any trash inside of it, and when I re-connected the external drive the "trash" (contents of my external drive) appears again in the trash. Is there a way to break the connection which has formed between my data on the external drive, and my trash bin? I was simply trying to eject my external drive as I've done hundreds of times by dragging the icon to the trash/eject area. I don't want to risk losing the data. Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Had a hard drive failing/failure. I am having my bad hard drive replaced with a bigger hard drive. (New Obviously) I have an iMac. (1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17-inch) To have my data transferred from the old drive will cost over a hundred bucks more. I am trying to save money but transferring it myself. All im looking to transfer is my photos. I did not have an external drive but i WILL purchse one now. My question, (to save some money) is how would i transfer my old pictures from my old drive, too my new installed hard drive. Can i use USB? Firewire?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?
