Hardware :: IBook G4 Freezes Sporadically
Jan 9, 2008
I sent in a question, but I thought I would also post a thread in case anyone else might have some helpful suggestions.
I have an iBook G4, Tiger edition 10.4.11, 1.07 GHz, 768 MB DDR SDRAM.
My system sporadically freezes. Whenever it is moved (i.e. resituated on my lap, or from my lap to the table). Or if I leave it unattended for a period of time (i.e. downloading something, and walk away, by the time I come back it's froze if I am not constantly DOING something). Or if I try to access 3 or 4 applications at a single time.
Sometimes the freeze is a complete system freeze where nothing works or moves. Sometimes everything but the mouse freezes and I can still move the black arrow around. Sometimes it freezes and the little beach ball just keeps spinning, but is still mobile.
Sometimes after it freezes it will not restart. Instead it goes to a screen where it is all white with black flashing horizontal lines.
Sometimes a screen will pop up and say simply "You need to restart your computer. Please hold down the power key."
The only thing that I've found that fixes the screen is to take out the battery for 5-10 seconds and then it restarts immediately and perfectly.
I've done my "google" research and found that the early G4's (which mine is) have issues with the logic board and my Mac showed similar symptom's. It also said the "clamp" method temporarily fixes the problem. I tried this and it did nothing but readjust the black flashing lines. It did not fix the problem.
I've tried completely reformatting my hard drive. Starting from scratch. I installed an additional 512 MB of RAM on top of the 256 built-in. I ran Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions. I installed SMART reporter, and it says that my hard drive is fine. I ran ClamXav before reformatting my drive and it found nothing. I can't run it now, it freezes before it's finished every time

I have a G4 iBook - 1.07Ghz, 768Mb RAM, Panther - that keeps giving me the swirling beachball of death depending on the date setting on preferences. If I set the date to 2004 the machine runs fine, but if the date is set to today or (I'm not sure of the exact date) after 2007-ish the thing keeps freezing.
Also, after the freezing troubles I installed Ubuntu and it ran perfect with the correct post 2007 date.

My beloved iBook 1.33 wont boot, has flashing? and freezes when I try to boot from original CD with a bunch of vertical lines. I ran the diagnostic DVD and it says Invalid memory access. I removed the external ram chip for computer and still get same error. I also zapped PRAM, reset NMVU (whatever it's called). I already have the iBooks case open and willing to try anything.

I naively tried to install leopard OS on my 5-year old ibook G4 (with very little RAM). It makes a horrible clicking sound from the dvd drive and freezes on the screen that says its looking for OS 10.4(?) (which is not on the computer). When I reboot it immediately starts the install process, because the dvd is still stuck in the drive, and freezes over & over again.
All I want to do is remove the disc and go back to the original OS, so that I can add more RAM and update the OS properly. (The only motive for the update is so that I can have the same version of Garageband 2008 on both my desktop and laptop so I can work with the files interchangably.)
Is there a way to restart the computer that bypasses the install disc and dosen't default into the install porocess?

I was working on my iBook G4 and it froze up on me. When I restart, it goes to the apple and spinning wheel then goes to a blue screen and sits there. If I restart it does the same thing. The only thing I have done for it to go to the login screen and not the blue screen is let it sit of a long time then try again. I have done a hardware test and everything passed. After much troubleshooting I figured I would erase the entire disk on the OS install and start over. I get about a quarter of the way through the OS install ( i have tried Leopard and after many freezes, reverted back to the original OS disk Panther) but I get the same thing everytime it just freezes. Usually everything freezes including the mouse pointer. My only option is to restart which gets me back to the blue screen. I have gone into the hard drive via firewire target disk mode and backed everything up. ANd everything seems fine in TDM. I also erased the disk through disk utility figuring if nothing is on the disk there should be nothing left to be causing this error. So i erased everything but still freezes up on the OS install.

I've been reading the other post and searching for ways to fix this. My ibook froze a couple of days ago, so I pressed the power button to do a hard turn off and then restarted it. It hasn't made through the blue screen since. It seems to load all way and then stops at the end, but stays on the blue screen. The mouse is not frozen though, I noticed that was a problem for some people. So I've already tried a lot of the suggestions I could find. I've tried resetting the PMU,Start your computer holding the ⌘ and S key on your keyboard. When the black screen turns up and the "writing" stops, you will see something like

I have an ibook g4. It freezes at the blue screen with the apply on it. The little circle goes around and around but nothing happens. I took it to an apple technician yesterday who told me the hard drive is toast so I should just throw it away. (Actually, he offered to take the keyboard.) When you do the fsck -fy it says that the hard drive was repaired sucessfully. Is it possible to have a hard drive that is bad and a message which says it has been repaired successfully? I don't mind having the hard drive replaced if that is what is wrong. I do not have any of the install discs any longer.

recently my ibook keeps randomly locking up, it first started the other day when it got stuck on a blue screen at start-up eventually it came on, but kept locking up, no spinning beech ball just completely froze, i held down the power button to turn it off, i then had to wait at least ten minutes before trying to start up again, if i didn't it would get stuck on the blue screen, then something else weird happened, when i started up it came up with the mac set-up assistant similar to when you first upgrade, so i turned it off again and it went away, so i started up again this time i noticed that spotlight was indexing, despite it already doing that ages ago when i upgraded to leopard, so i thought this had something to do with it, because it kept freezing in the process, but today i turned it on, let it index and to my surprise it didn't lock up, so i went to play world of warcraft, and as soon as the login screen came up it locked up agai

I have a MAC OS X 10.4.11 IBook G4 1.1. It's acting up on me. Crashes often and freezes as well. The only CD I can find is the Mac OS X Tiger Install DVD. Is this the Hardware test cd as well?
If yes, how do I get the hardware test started. I tried the "restart while holding "C"" and "restart while holding the "option key""... Doesn't work... Don't see a hardware test option. If no, Can I download the application

well where do i begin ?? basicly i purchased a ibook g4 14" 1.33ghz that had its harddrive upgraded by a apple service provider. About two weeks after this upgrade took place the harddrive started playing up and the machine would not see the boot volume on the drive when restarted or every now and then the machine would freeze after some time of use, a few hours maybe. i ran apple hardware test and it came back clean after zapping the pram and disk warrioring the drive it fixed this for a day then it started again oh well.
so i sent it back to the service provider who said yep its the hadrdrive goody !!! oh NO he calls back the next day and says the new harddrive is not reconized and that they tried a new ribbon cable WTF when i sent it in the machine saw the harddrive via target disk mode all the time it just didnt see the boot volume.
NOW his saying its the logicboard **** sake !!! so my question could this machines logicboard be fried when it was fine before i sent it in , i mean the ide controller was fine i checked it and now im faced with a brick !!!what do i do ????

in the last week or so I've begun having a problem with the WiFi connection on my MBP. While using the Internet, web pages will no longer load, my mail client can't connect to the mail server, etc. When I use the terminal to ping Google or any other site, I get the message that the server can't be found. In the menu bar, the WiFi icon indicates a strong connection, but when I open Network Preferences, it says that WiFi is off. When I click, "Turn WiFi on," the menu bar icon goes to the empty fan icon but WiFi refuses to turn back on again. The only thing that I've found to work is to restart, and once or twice now that hasn't worked either.
One other thing I noticed was that this last week Network Preferences had identified my fitbit tracker USB syncing dongle as a network device and had added it to the list of devices on the left side of the preferences pane. This happened after I had already begun to have problems, and after I deleted the syncing dongle from the list, WiFi came back up again with no problem. This is a MBP with a 2.7 GHz i7, eight GB of RAM, running 10.7.4.Can you offer any solutions or suggestions for further troubleshooting?

MacBook Pro, bought in April of 2007. I've had this thing for almost three years now and I love it. It's my baby and has been with me through alot. Anyways, I've never had a problem with it before until now. Actually I take that back, the battery went ka-put about a year or so ago when it was under warranty. Regardless, here's the problem: The LED doesn't shine anymore. It's really dim. The battery does not charge at all, it's stuck at 0%, so right now I'm stuck with a really cool desktop.
When I play music from my computer on my stereo, the line out feed has a lot of static interference, like theres a ground or something in the metal casing of the computer. The computer randomly shuts down. I've come to notice it normally does this when it is under "too much" stress. (ie: too many windows or applications open) I use quotations because I bought it w the 3gb upgrade and it never has problems w RAM, so for it to be shutting down the computer when only 4 safari windows or tabs are open is bull..

My MBP 13" (summer 2009) has been getting slower and slower for a while. Finally yesterday it was just hanging on the spinning rainbow and completely unresponsive. I had to hold down the power button to restart, but even then it was frozen, no matter how many times I restarted. I had everything pretty much backed up, so I deleted my HD and did a clean reinstall of Lion.
Even that had hiccups: at first I was getting the error message that the HD couldn't be deleted because the disk couldn't be unmounted. Finally when booting from a Lion DVD I was able to delete and clean reinstall. All seemed well last night but today I am still noticing some problems. There is a few seconds delay when opening any new folder in Finder, opening a program from the Dock, or clicking on a menu item.
Sometimes the cursor gets frozen on an arrow or other special cursor, after mousing over a link or seemingly for no reason at all. When typing, I'm getting sporadic delays: three times while typing this message, the computer froze up for about 5 seconds, and then the text finally appeared. I'm also seeing similar delays in scrolling.
Sometimes scrolling works, sometimes I need to wait a few seconds for a webpage to become responsive. This is alarming to me considering that there is almost nothing installed on the computer except Lion and a few light programs (Evernote, OpenOffice). I haven't put anything back on the computer from the backup since the clean reinstall.

My MacBook Pro 13" i7 2012 model keeps sporadically freezing. I can see the screen, but can't do anything, just hear a stuttering sound, for example if I'm listening to a song it repeats a tiny segment of the song non-stop. When trying to use the webcam on Tinychat it also periodically froze and stuttered.Â

I have an old Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 (aluminum tower). When it boots up, I get a message that the Date & Time are no longer correct. I go into date and time settings and reset them, however when I shot down and reboot later, the time has been reset to June 1969 or some similar date. Also, when the computer shuts down, it cannot be rebooted immediately. If I try to reboot it, I hear the fans start up and drives start spinning, but then they all seem to power down (a red light can still be visible inside. If I shut it down and wait 15 minutes, it will boot up fine, however the date/time has reset to 1969. Â
I have done the obvious things like replacing the clock battery and resetting the pram and smu, but still no joy. I suspect a hardware fault of some kind, but don't know what to try next.

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.
Information:
imac 24 inch
Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I have an iBook (running OS X Tiger) which is wirelessly connected to a home network via a wireless router. On this network I have a Windows PC to which a HP Laserjet 1010 is connected via USB. I would like to be able to share this printer on the Windows PC so that I can print from the iBook.I have set file and print sharing options on the Windows PC. I have then added a new printer in OS X over 'Windows Printing'. OS X sees the printer and allows me to add it after puting in a username and password (I used the 'Guest' username). However when I try and print from the iBook the printer initialises and then procedes to print "%!PS-Adobe-3.0 %RBINumCopies: 1 %%..." and then lots of random letters. I thought that this looked like the iBook wasn't using the right drivers and after checking it appears it is using Generic Printer drivers.

I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

Right now I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, 640 MB RAM, Combodrive, 40 GB HDD). I'm looking at a G4 iBook (1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive, 60 GB HDD).
How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?

I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.

CD-ROM
currently has 6 GB HD
ibook G4- 1064 MHZ

So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?
