MacBook Pro :: Can The Video Card Be Upgraded

Nov 22, 2009

Following the death of my dual G4 867mhz system, I have been left with an IBM T42 laptop for the last few months on which to work (feel free to Google if you're curious about the stats).

I can't honestly say that I care much for the iMacs and the Mac Pros are beyond my budget so it looks like I'll be going with the next revision of the Macbook Pro.

I've reviewed the Apple website and I'm interested in the high-end 15 inch with the dual video card setup with 512MB of VRAM. What I am not pleased with, however, is that it is also configured with additional RAM and HDD space; both of which Apple charges a premium for.

My line of thinking is that I'll purchase the other two components from third party vendors as add-ons for the base configuration and upgrade the video card either at the Apple store or elsewhere - assuming it's practical.

My question then, can the video card in the Macbook Pro be upgraded?

Mac Pro :: 'Investing' In An Upgraded Graphics Card

Feb 6, 2009

pretty set on getting a single processor Mac Pro, 2.8 in the standard configuration.my dual 1.8G5 died a few weeks back, and as patient as i'd like to be about waiting for a new Mac Pro, i don't think i can wait until June...of course, if i *knew* it were march, i might be able to, but who knows...it's all a matter of rolling the dice.my question is this: is it worth spending the extra $150 (or slightly discounted) on the 8880GT video card in terms of "future usage"?i am not a gamer nor need great video power for my things (i do photoshop but no video editing, etc.)

However, i note that a new 8800GT costs in the 230+ range and i wonder aloud if i'm better off buying it now and being set for the life of the machine.my plan/hope: i will keep this machine, just like i did my old Powermac, for hopefully 4-6 years (assuming it doesn't die...if my G5 hadn't died, i'd still be happily using it for another year or two).or should i wait...and maybe a couple of years down the road, buy a faster video card for about the same $150 (or will such a thing be available once new Mac Pros come out)?

Desktops :: Need A Video Card/Replace A Video Card?

Sep 4, 2009

Ok so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

PowerPC :: Video Card For A G5 - For Video Editing Watching Hulu And Youtube And Netflix

May 25, 2010

Well I got rid of the quicksilvers since they died. Power supplys gave out and took the motherboards, So I sold what was left on EBAY.

My G4 Ethernet was sold to a co-worked and he is quite happy.

And I got this off ebay today:

Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5Procs
2GB RAM (2 x 1GB PC3200U DDR SDRAM)
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
Samsung HD160JJ/P 160GB SATA HDD (not apple labeled, not original to this system)
(1) Power Cord
pci106b,9 PCI Ethernet Controller

Well I didnt' read the fine print and BAZINGA! I noticed that it comes without a video card.

So For video editing, watching hulu and youtube and netflix What do you guys recommend.

I do have a PCI GEforce at home with 512 megs for PC and I was wondering if I could flash it and if so, does anyone know of a good walkthrough?

Mac Pro :: Does A Video Card Always Have To Be The Mac Version Of That Card

Apr 28, 2010

I see here that my Mac Pro (Early 2008) is compatable with:

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600
ATI Radeon HD 4870

It looks like in many cases there's two versions, and the mac version costs about 10x as much on ebay and in stores. Is that accurate, or is one of these models mac and pc compatable, and therefore the laws of supply and demand work in my favour?

(fyi: I just want the cheapest one, I don't do heavy GPU work)

Mac :: MacBook Video Card And Graphics?

Oct 4, 2009

I'm not exactly hardware savvy, so please bear with me.I've been looking into some cool video games for my MacBook (white, couple of years old, Leopard), and it appears I need a new video card/graphics/whatever. I think it's GeForce or something.I've heard in the past that the video card/graphics could not be upgraded in the Macs. Not sure if this is true or if it has changed. Is there any possible way on Earth that I could send the MacBook into a shop and get the video card/graphics updated? It doesn't have to be Apple; a genuine third party would do.

MacBook Pro :: Can Upgrade Video Card

May 18, 2012

I have a early 2008 15 inch macbook pro. I am wondering if I can upgrade the video card somehow. It doesnt appear to be one of the "diy" upgrades that are possible like RAM and Battery replacement, but can I bring it to an apple store and have it upgraded? I have a new videogame that appears to get slower when there are a lot of objects on the screen. I recently upgraded my RAM from 2GB to 4GB so i don't think it is my memory, and my processory is 2.4 GHz which according to the game specifications is fine.

Info:
Mac OS X (10.6.8)

OS X :: Refurbished Macbook 2.1 Ghz Not Sure Of Video Card - Diablo 2 On 10.5.6

Feb 27, 2009

I recently bought a refurbished macbook (2.1 ghz, 120 gb hd, 1 gb ram, not sure of video card), and I have been trying to play diablo 2. I downloaded the installer and patch for it, but after installing everything, I am unable to start it up at all. It says, "The application Diablo II quit unexpectedly." From here I can ignore, report or relaunch. I've reported once already, but relaunching is pointless and ignore obviously closes it out entirely. I am not even able to get a startup or menu screen to come up. I have never owned a Mac before now so I am learning as I go. I am pretty sure I need to get to 256 colors, but I am stuck with millions. There are no other available options and downgrading my resolution has had no effect.

MacBook Pro :: GfxCardStatus And Video Card Switching?

Jun 29, 2010

I was using the nvidia card, which is the higher performance. I had parallels running and it was "dependant" on the nVidia card. So even when I went to battery power, it stayed in nvidia.

I closed parallels (while on battery power) and it switched to Intel video, so that works. Then I plugged the power back in, and have been plugged in for hours, I even unplugged the power and plugged it back in (switch from A/C power to battery, and back to A/C power) but it just stays on Intel.

MacBook Pro :: Video Card Failed / Display Was All Garbled

Dec 6, 2010

I have a 2006 MBP and the video card just failed out of nowhere. The display was all garbled. Took it to the apple store and they confirmed my suspicions. Unfortunately, this is not the video card that was covered in the class-action suit (or whatever it was) where apple admitted fault and agreed to replace for free.

Anyhow, they are offering to change the video card for $300 and throw in a battery replacement. I am otherwise pretty happy with the laptop. Do you think it's worth doing, or is it likely that other components will continue to fail. Should I just go ahead and purchase a new one?

MacBook Pro :: Battery App That Shows Video Card In Menu Bar?

Jun 8, 2012

for reasons I won't go into, I had to re-init my SSD and restore from a TM back-up. I used to have a little app that had an icon in the menu bar showing what graphics mode was being used while on battery/charger. I swear I can't remember the name of the app. It was useful for making certain that the right graphics mode was being utilized (amongst other things).

It's not Battery Health - I can't recall it at all. I obviously didn't get it in the App Store because nothing like that is showing up in my purchases.

Mac OS X (10.7.4), 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD
