OS X :: Wifi Speed Differences Between OS X And XP

Aug 22, 2009

I am currently running 3 systems on my home network. 1 Notebook. Apple Macbook (Core Duo) running 10.5.81 Netbook. Acer Aspire One D250 running XP1 PC. Dell Dimension 3000 (PoS) running XPThe Macbook and Netbook are both connected via Wifi, while the PC is connected via network cable to my Macbook with Internet sharing on.Out of curiosity I ran a speed test (speedtest.net) to see if there was any difference between what I was getting through Wifi, and through sharing. I could understand losing some speed going from wifi to internet sharing, but I also get 8-9 mbps download results on my netbook.

Mac Pro :: Boot Drive - Read And Write Speed Differences?

Apr 27, 2012

My Mac Pro came with a 500GB boot drive when I ordered it 3 years ago.  It has been used most days and now runs Snow Leopard (for scanners and a canopus video box that don't work with Lion) and Lion. I did a write & write test on the drive recently at both were approx 60 - 65 MB/s.  I have another drive in my machine I bought last month, replacing an WD drive that failed in less than 18 months. This new drive (complete same as replacement is a WD Caviar (Black) 1TB 64Mb drive. This drive tests at speeds for 110MB/s.  This may seem an obvious question, but will I notice much difference if I swap the drives around and have the newer drive as my boot drive. Also, does having two OS on a HD slow the drive down also?

PowerPC :: Differences In Speed Between PC2700 And PC2100 IGB Chip In PowerBook G4 1.33Ghz

Can anyone confirm the real-life differences in speed between a PC2700 1GB chip and a PC2100 IGB chip in a PowerBook G4 1.33Ghz which normally takes the PC2700? I know the slower chip is compatible so I'm just wondering about the difference in performance. I can get it at half the price of the normal, slightly faster chip.

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Downloading Speed Very Slow / Speed Test Shows It Is Fast

Apr 30, 2009

Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

OS X :: Internet Speed Over Wifi Vs. Ethernet?

Ive got a pretty fast internet connection at home and I have just realised that when I plug my iBook and desktop pcs into my wireless router ethernet (LAN) ports I get a much faster internet connection speed compared to the wifi.I.e. 12-17mbps when through ethernet and when I connect to the wifi I get 2-4mbps. My computers are all located in the same room no more than 5 metres away from the router.

OS X :: Speed Degradation On Wifi Network?

Aug 3, 2010

I have a wifi network running with two Airport Express units. One unit is an Airport Express "N" and one is a "G". The "N" is connected to my router and configured as the main basestation. My "G" is connected as a remote station and extends my network and I connect my stereo to it.I've noticed that my wifi network starts off relatively fast (speedtest from my Powerbook laptop is about 10-15mbs), however it soon slows down significantly (to about .2-.5 mbs). My line connection is fiber optic. My PC (which is connected directly to the router) gets very fast speeds (about 80mbs).

OS X :: Slow WiFi Speed - Downloads Are Under 20kbs?

Aug 11, 2009

around my house, even right next to my wireless router, I have a pretty slow WiFi speed - normally my downloads are under 20kbs a second (I have a hard time even watching YouTube videos). When I plug my laptop into an ethernet port, it greatly increases and I sometimes see speeds above 100kbs. I'm using a really cheap router, but I've used other routers with the same results.

Intel Mac :: Poor WiFi Speed On It But Excellent With IPhone 4S?

Jun 12, 2012

I've recently upgraded my internet speeds through my ISP to have 50Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.  I use my 2TB Time Capsule as a router as it has by far provided the best connectivity than any other router.  I run dual network - connect my iPhone 4S through standard network and my iMac through 5GHz network.  Since upgrading my speed, I have noticed that my iMac speeds vary greatly, but most of the time I'm struggling to get more than 10Mbps download, however on my iPhone I easily achieve almost 40Mbps.  I have tried different browsers, and ensured all other applications are closed and even switched the iMac (2009 i7 quad core) to the standard network.  At that point I noticed a slight increase in speed but it was short lived.

I am stumped on what to try next.  Does anyone have ideas? The iMac is a little hot, but nothing that isn't normal so I can't put it down to heat or anything. I recently installed Windows 7 through bootcamp but didn't expect that to impact anything, however it was around a SIMILAR time that I noticed issues, as previously I was getting a consistent connection of 20Mbps before I upgraded.

Hardware :: Maximizing Speed And Reliability Using A Time Capsule & Another Wifi Router?

Mar 1, 2010

I currently have a Belkin wireless-N router (the cheapest one I could find, regrettably) so that I can have wifi in my dorm room, but this router isn't cutting it anymore. I've given the password to a couple of my friends, but their favorite things to do while on my network are Skype, Hulu, and ESPN streaming--leaving me with an unreliable, slow wireless connection.To help with this problem, I want to buy a Time Capsule--I'm really looking forward to using its wireless backup and printer sharing features. My first question is, though, will a Time Capsule be able to handle multiple bandwidth-hogging wireless connections faster and more reliably than my cheapo Belkin router, or will it also choke? (I know for a fact that the problem isn't my university's network, because I get blazing fast download and upload speeds via Ethernet.)

Anyone here have a 1.6 with the SSD notice any crippling/adverse effects to there everyday computing. I am looking at ordering the MB Air this week, but purchasing the MB Air with the 1.6 GHz and SSD make it easier to justify by saving costs on the processor upgrade.

MacBook Pro :: Differences Between New I5's I7's And Old C2D's

May 3, 2010

First the Obvious;
1. New AC Plugin (on both ends, wallplug is completely smooth now)
2. Different Internal Hardware
3. Better Battery Life
4. Optional Higher Resolution Screens
5. Optimus like Hybrid GPU switching

Kinda Obvious, but some may have missed;
1. Inertial Scrolling
2. Little bit heavier
3. Activity Monitor shows 4 Cores not 2

You'd really have to look;
1. This may just be me, but I feel as if the hinge is different, in terms of pressure right before you close it. Picture below shows a 2.8 duo left and an i5 right. I have been playing with them for a while now, and some of the other 2.8's and it seems right before you close the lid, the new i5's have more of a push required, so as to slow the force in close. That way you don't slam it closed.

2. Wifi seems to get an active working connection quicker

3. Microphone and Headphone input jacks have much more "snap" to them. Devices really snap in there so you know you're connected.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Differences Between 64 Bit And 32 Bit?

I wanted to know the differences between 64 bit and 32 bit OSx I am currently running the latest Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 spring macbook pro with 8 gigs of ram 500 gigs HD. From what I can read in the info it looks like it defaults to 32 bit automatically but I was told that I can hold down the 6 and 4 keys during startup to start with 64 bit. I would just like to know anyones experiences and what software it works better with. I usually run Adobe CS5.5 and it would be great to find out 64 bit will give it a boost.

Applications :: CS4 Program Differences

Apr 19, 2009

At first, it seemed like Adobe makes several programs that do the same thing. But after a bit of research, I found out that they do have target audiences. I hope this guide helps people who are confused.

Dreamweaver vs Contribute.
If you want to build a website, get Dreamweaver. Contribute is designed for people who want to edit their Dreamweaver-built site, and is designed with collaboration in mind, because it edits right off the server.

Personally, I think Contribute is a big-ridden piece of garbage, if it were me, I would stick to Dreamweaver

Photoshop vs Fireworks.
Don't think of Fireworks as a stripped down version of Photoshop. Think of it as a really-really-really-really stripped down version of Flash, smashed together with CorelDRAW. Fireworks was meant to be used to make things like rollover icons, menus, and such for websites. It lets you drag-and-drop squares and circles. Pretty simple

Photoshop, on the other hand, is a powerful, expensive, image editor. Unlike Fireworks, you cannot add any dynamic-ness (word?) to images.

InDesign vs Illustrator.
InDesign is definitely more powerful than Illustrator. If you are just making simple one-page documents, ID might be a bit of an overkill.

Bridge vs Finder
Bridge is worthless. I can't see what it does that Finder doesn't.

Please correct any errors I may have made, as this is just from what I can tell. Hope this helps you with your purchase of overpriced Adobe software.

Mac Pro :: Mouse Acceleration Differences Between OS X And Windows

Nov 1, 2010

As a long time Windows user when I first started using OS X a couple years ago, I remember the mouse control driving me nuts. It can be quite hard to get used to the OS X acceleration control. I explored a couple of the programs to let you customize the acceleration, but I guess my brain eventually just adapted as it stopped bothering me.

Now though, I am spending a good amount of time in Win 7 on my new Mac Pro. I'm finding that again, every time I go into OS X I find the mouse control very hard to adjust to. It's a Logitech Anywhere MX Mouse and I installed the drivers in both Win 7 and OS X.

Perhaps I am just loosing my mind...but it would be nice if I could have the exact same mouse experience when switching between OS's.

(edit: As a little bit of a further observation, I think the Win 7 mouse refresh rate is several times faster than what I observing in OS X and this is probably a big part of why I am feeling like I have more control in Win 7. Doing circles with my mouse in Win 7 creates a much more complete circle.)

OS X :: TimeMachine Post 10.5.6 - File Differences?

Dec 15, 2008

I wasn't sure where else to put this and I know people here have TimeMachine/backup experience. I don't know if this is true after every system software update, but after applying 10.5.6, Time Machine wants to backup 70GB worth of stuff. That's an additional 70GB worth of space taken up on my backup drive. I'm guess that that is all of the file differences because of the update? it so happens that I have a little over 71GB worth of stuff on my drive total. (What can I say, I leave a small footprint and archive a lot off disk). So it basically wants to back up my entire drive all over again. Is this normal? I could nuke the existing backup and just start fresh and not be concerned with losing anything.
