I have a single boot disk with just the apps on, and 2 disks in a software mirrored RAID in which I keep all the important stuff.Its just occurred to me, if the boot drive fails won't the software RAID be destroyed as well?Or will it be easy to recover the data off one of the previously RAID1 disks, when the new boot drive is installed?

i am seeing that this is more difficult in practice than it sounds.
for instance, i have all sorts of folders such as Music or Screenshots or Pictures or Movies etc, etc, etc and i am wondering if I should just keep ALL of this dat on the separate drive and RE-POINT all my software that uses a database to that folder on the other drive.
My Hard drive has become corrupted and is going to need reformat. I have managed to mount the iMac as a firewire drive on my Macbook and pulled off quite a bit of data. The repair utility wont fix the drive so I have no choice other than to reformat.
How do I get Lion back on?
I decided that I couldn't wait for Gainestown and ordered a 2.8x8 MP today. I'm going to get another 8GB of RAM (I assume 10GB in matched pairs will still perform at full speed). My real dilemma is a Boot/Storage solution-I'm moving from a Dual 867 G4, so all my current drives, both internal and external are IDE, which basically means I'm starting over as far as internal drives goes. The G4 power supply gave out so I'm getting this external enclosure to put my old drives into for file recovery. As far as new drives go, I can't figure out what to do. I'll spare you my million iterations of drive configs I've sketched over the past two days.

I need to send my G5 back to them. Can I take the internal hard drive out and transfer the data to a PC and then get that data off the PC onto an external HD?
I'm setting up my MacPro and received suggestions to have one drive for boot and applications only. Then have a separate drive for data.
I know I can set up a separate USER account and point to another HD and leave the Admin untouched, except for installing new applications.

I'm still working out the details on purchasing a new MacPro. My Apple sales rep tells me that I can greatly increase the launch speed of applications and the system OS by purchasing 2 hard drives and using Disk Utility to stripe them together into a "software RAID". They claim it will be faster and more reliable than a single SSD. I know I've asked this question before, but the answers were over my head. I don't know anything about SATA raid cards, or SSD's except for their benefits. But I'm pretty sure I can stripe two drives together and make a software RAID.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI thought i'd share this with everyone if anyone has been interested or curious to do the same, I have installed a Raid 0 setup in my 2.4ghz Aluminum macbook using 250gb and 320gb Seagate 7200.3 2.5" drives with 16mb cache each. The reason its 2 different sizes? Because i'm stupid! I bought the 320 thinking the other drive was 320 aswell- only realising once i had installed both that they were different sizes. Not to fear- the raid would be slowed down by the slowest drive, specification wise they are both the same so no problems there. In fact in my case it creates something which is quite awesome- individual boot partitions on each drive.

I know that the new Intels are coming but I am happy with the Patriots and wanted some instant gratification. The machine is definetly snappier but doesn't quite have the pep as my MBP running a 256gb SSD as the sole HDD.

It seems sometimes when I start an application that lives on the SSD boot drive, the other drives begin to run as well (I can hear them spinning). I've had my TIme Capsule for a few years now. Last year I decided to self upgrade the internal HDD to 3TB to actually fit back-ups from my two mac's at home. On my MBP the boot drive failed. Intel Mac Pro with Snow Leopard, 4 internal 2tb drives configured as a RAID 5 using the Apple RAID card. One of the four disks, always the same one (#4) occasionally drops out of the RAID and becomes a roaming disk instead of a spare. I get an error message from RAID utility telling me the array has failed, and when I look in the utility, the naughty disk isn't visible. Only disks 1 through 3. If I restart the machine the 4th disk appears but is listed as roaming. I can use the pull down menu to "Make Spare", thus reassigning disk 4 to the RAID set. It takes several days to re-establish itself as part of the RAID.
But then a few days later the same disk drops out of the RAID again. Is this a hardware problem with the RAID card? Or is there a software fix for this behavior?
I just got a used mac pro quad. I plan to use it for video production- final cut pro, pics - aperture, and music production- protools. THe computer came with 3 - 10k rpm 160g hd's. Two of them are set up as a raid 0. I like the idea of having a faster drive as a boot drive, but 160 seems kind of small to me as the drive to run memory hungry apps and the operating system. Am I right? I could go to a 300g 10k rpm drive. I am also thinking about getting a bigger drive, say a 750g or 1 tb 7200 rpm. Should I use this as the boot drive or as a secondary storage drive?. If it's the boot drive should I add the other 160g 10k drive to the raid or keep it separate? I assume that neither way would be wrong, nor create a problem, but since I haven't put anything on it yet, I'm wondering what would be the most efficient way to manage my files and get the most out of my computer.
View 16 Replies View RelatedAfter many hours of head-banging, I now realize that Lion cannot be installed on a boot drive that is part of an Apple software mirrored RAID (early Mac Pro hardware, Snow Leopard.)Something about a limitation that a RAID drive cannot be repartitioned to allow for the creation of the Recovery partition.Sad, but so be it.So, I plan to use SuperDouper! to copy my boot drive to a fresh, non-RAID drive, boot from that drive, and then and install Lion there.Once I have done that, will I be able to add the new Lion boot drive to a new Apple Software RAID mirror set? Or is Lion simply not capable of being booted from a software RAID device?

I know how to do it with the boot disk, but is there any way to do it without one? I just want to restore the whole thing.
I have read that it is very helpful to separate the applications programs on one disk or volume and place the data on a separate disk or volume..as described below:

My system has multiple hard drives, but this newbie is wondering how actually I accompany this.. do I simply save the photos, spreadsheets , etc , onto the different drive as I am working with them within the applications?
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (2007) with the Apple RAID Card and 3 500GB drives in RAID 5. This leaves a total of about 1TB space, which [for historical reasons] is split into two 500GB partitions - one with the OS and home directories, the other with project data. I just received an additional 500GB drive matching the 3 already present, which I intend to add to the array -- bringing the total space available to 1.5 TB. Since I need to backup and restore the filesystem to expand the array, this is the perfect opportunity to revisit my partitioning scheme.
The problem with the current scheme is that I often find myself in the situation where I am working on a project, and one partition is full, but the other has plenty of space - so I end up wasting a lot of time moving files from partition to partition to get things done. So no matter what, I know that I want to combine the home directories and project data on one large partition. The question is should I have:
1) A separate small partition for the OS and a large one for everything else?
2) One giant partition for everything?
So, I think the standard 320 is a bit noisy when writing sometimes. I have a F1 750gig in bay 2, can some describe how i easily could transfer my boot drive data to this and use it as a bootdrive.

Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. I have two drives on my MacBook Pro 17-inch, mid 2010. One is 500 GB and one is 80 GB. The system was installed on the 80GB drive and my home folder was on the 500GB drive. Having the "Home" folder on a separate partition was causing all kinds of permission problems. So, I did a clean install of Yosemite and want to put everything on the 500GB drive.
When I go to restore from Time Machine, it tells me it can't restore the "Home" account because it is on a separate drive. Then, of course, I can't login to that account on the restored system – I get an error "can't log in to that account due to an error."
How do I restore and associate the backed up "Home" folder to the new "Home" account on the restored drive? The names of the users are exactly the same on the backup as on the "Home" account on the restored drive.
