I already have a 2x 1tb RAID 0 drive (totaling 2tb). I butchered my old XP machine and ripped out its 1tb drive.My question is, can I add a that old XP 1tb to the exisiting RAID 0 combination?Before you say, I triple backup all my files which are mainly photos so I am aware of the dangers of RAID 0.

One SATA drive is existing and has data on it; I just installed the second one because I want to mirror the 1st drive onto the 2nd one.My questions are: how do I do it? When I try to create a RAID set in the Disk Utility GUI, it says all data will be destroyed. I cancelled that.So I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror disk1, which told me I could only mirror volumes.The volume name is RAID, so I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/RAID which gave me an error "Error enabling disk to RAID Could not unmount disk (-10000)"

Is there any benefit to ordering the MAC Pro Raid card for setting up 2 x 500gig SATA drives in a Raid Zero configuration? Or..Is this accomplished just as well via software in leopard??
Apologies if this is a stupid question - but just wondering if I can save some $ by not having to order the RAID card without giving up anything.
I will use a 3rd 1TB drive for Time machine for back up.
I have just recieved two 1TB WD caviar Black drives and will be using one as a boot drive and one as a drive for my home folder.1 TB is clearly very large as a boot drive, and I think that it would be best to partition it, however I am not sure how much would be best for a partition?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a mixed Mac/PC environment - Macbook Pro (snow leopard); iMac 21 (leopard); 2 x Dell laptops (XP) - and an existing wifi network from a Belkin 8233-4 N modem/router. Also connected to the wifi network is a WHS for backing up the laptops; an HP printer; 2 iphones; an xbox 360; and a Wii.
I've just bought a 1TB Time Capsule to use to back up the Macs as my previous external time machine hard drive just died (which was connected via USB to the iMac).
At the moment, I've got the TC set up to join my existing wifi network (it's connected via an Ethernet cable from the Belkin wireless router), however I'm getting issues with the wifi network not working properly and being unable to connect to the internet. Every time you wake the Mac, you have to manually reconnect to the wifi (and sometimes even re-enter the password), and things work OK until the Mac goes back to sleep. When I go into the Airport utility, the settings say that the TC is set to create a new network, so I reset it back to join an existing network via ethernet, but then if I go back to these settings a little later (after having problems with the wifi connectivity), they have reverted back to create a new network !
What am I doing wrong ?
I have a HD in my Mac Pro that is about 80% filled. I wanted to add another HD and configure the 2 as a RAID, Can I do this without reformatting the existing drive, or loosing my 80% capacity data?
The first HD is a 1TB and im looking to add an identical HD to make a 2TB drive.
I have a MBP (see signature) and two Freecom 500GB USB external Hard Discs. Is it possible to somehow set up these two HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration under OS X. The reason for this is that right now I have a large collections of films on the one of the HDD and would hate to loose them all if the disc failed.

Firstly, all data will be backed up using a NAS (maybe a time capsule), so at the moment I am just looking to mirror the primary drive of a Power Mac G5 incase of hardware faults.
The G5 is acting as a server and I therefore want to arrive at a situation that if a drive fails, the machine will still boot perfectly from one of the redundant disks (and of course notify the user to the failure), i.e. a bootable RAID 1 configurationAs I understand it, I can only achieve this using a dedicated RAID controller (i.e. this can't be done via a software raid)? I made about adding esata to my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad, I added a card and now have to esata ports.I've been thinking about buying an Icy Dock enclosure that will hold 2 HD's and supports both USB and esata. I have an existing striped raid 0 setup with 2 x 500 GB hard drives.
I just bought 2 more x 500 GB hard drives since i noticed HDD is a bottleneck for my 8 core system.
my question is, can i add the 2 harddrives to my existing raid 0 partition ? (so i have one raid partition of 2 TB )
Anyone know if it's possible to attach two USB hard drives to a Time Capsule via a USB hub, and configure them in a RAID1 configuration and use them as my Time Machine backup disk? I would then use the TCs internal drive as network storage.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHaving had an issue with 2 powercuts in quick succession meaning my Mac Pro was unbootable I am looking into the software RAID built into Snow Leopard. I know it doesn't replace backups and I got my data back ok from backups. My system disk is a 1GB drive, could I purchase a 2nd identical drive and mirror across that without having to do a system re-install? What would happen to the Bootcamp partition which is also on the same drive. Taking my thoughts one step further, if I bought 3 more 1TB drives, could I create software mirror sets, and then stripe across those, which should give me some performance and reliability gains?

In addition I have a 1TB LaCie hard drive that I use to general backups. I have been considering setting up some sort of RAID configuration to ensure data redundancy while also being able to use the same set up work as a streaming NAS server to my other components. I know Drobo makes a product but it's rather expensive given it's specs.

What I want to know is will a RAID 1 configuration play nice with Boot Camp?
Is it even possible to use boot camp on a RAID 1 configuration?and if it is possible, would the RAID 1 duplicate the Bootcamp Partition too?
These are three important questions because I like the idea of the RAID 1 security and because I'll be pairing it with a Blu-ray drive I'd most likely have to install Windows via Boot Camp to watch them.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI?m having a horrible time trying to figure out a good storage and backup system for my files. I?m a wedding photographer so I have a lot of images in a Lightroom catalog. Currently I have two 1.5tb drives in an internal stripped set that has all of my images on it. It?s currently at about 65% full. I also have my DVDs all an internal 1tb drive that is 80% full. My system drive is a 500gb drive that has about 150gb on it. I use two external 1tb drives for backing up the RAID0. One is used for TM and backs up my ?working images? folder as well as my Documents folder and the other one is used for CCC and backs up the rest of the images. I also have a clone of my boot drive.
This seems like a haphazard setup and one that I would like to optimize. Here are my thoughts and I would love to have input from others. I like the speed of the stripped set for Lightroom so I would like to keep that. I would also like to have offsite backup as well as an easy (as possible) way to recover from drive failures while protecting ?in process? work..............
So a little bit about my situation: I have a macbook pro and recently moved my iTunes library to an external drive since I was running out of space on my computer. Obviously I changed the library folder to the one on the external in preferences ect. The only problem is that I'm not carrying around the external with me all the time, in fact, recently I connected the hard drive to sync the month's worth of new music I got and even after changing the library folder to the external one, only about half the songs from my whole library would play.
It's really a pain to add new music to the hard drive too because it keeps prompting me to replace the files. Long story short, I'm obviously not going about this right. Is anyone in the same situation as me/do you know of a better way to keep track of a library on external? If I didn't explain clearly enough (which i probably didnt) dont hesitate to ask.
I have just bought a X25-M SSD drive for my MBP (mid-2010). Is it recommend to clone my existing stock drive to get OSX on the SSD or should I rebuild from scratch and perhaps use Time Machine to recover all my apps and settings?

I have a Mac Mini connected to a Lacie external HD that houses all of my iTunes library. I've just bought a new iMac to replace the Mini and want to keep the iTunes library on the external, just point the new machine's iTunes to the existing library on the external.
How best to do that? I don't want to restore from TM because I want to start fresh from this Mac and there really isn't a lot to keep other than the iTunes (most of it is on the external). If I point to an existing location, I don't need to Consolidate, do I? Any risk of losing the library? Do I need to unlink the library on the existing Mac?
My current setup consists of my boot drive (250GB), a striped RAID (500GB) for storage and a 1TB Time Machine Drive.I have recently bought a new 1TB internal drive and would like to replace the striped raid with this drive, thus freeing up two 250GB drives - 1 which i will keep internally and the other will go into a external enclosure My question is can i just copy the files from the RAID to the new internal or do i have to use software to clone it?

My Apple sales rep tells me that I can greatly increase the launch speed of applications and the system OS by purchasing 2 hard drives and using Disk Utility to stripe them together into a "software RAID". They claim it will be faster and more reliable than a single SSD. I know I've asked this question before, but the answers were over my head. I don't know anything about SATA raid cards, or SSD's except for their benefits. But I'm pretty sure I can stripe two drives together and make a software RAID.

Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.
Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?

I have a 1/3 full external drive that is currently formatted for MAC OS External.
I want to partition the drive in half and use the 2nd partition for Windows FAT32.
However, when I try to do this with Disk Utility it does not give me the FAT32 option.
I have a 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook. Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53). Currently I have a 160 GB SATA disk as my hard drive a d 4 GB of memory. (Is it time to upgrade or what?) I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB internal hard drive to replace my exisiting internal hard drive. I spent a lot of time last night trying to first- connect this new hard drive to my computer so that I can then clone the existing hard drive and then hoping that I would get that done so I could install the new hard drive. No such luck.
My current hard drive is partitioned as follows:

When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:

Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. Question # 1: is that going to be a problem? I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BOOTCAMP on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Like I said it didn't give me the option to choose Windows so I didn't know where to go with this. Any help with that would be awesome.
Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.) I connected the Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. The first one went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BOOTCAMP drives. However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BOOTCAMP drive. Question #2: Is it because of the Format type I chose when partitioning?
