I have a friend that has an old laptop (not sure which model) which died suddenly before she backed up her files, she's had to go out and get a new one because she needs if for school, i was just wondering if it was possible to take the hard drive out of the old laptop (we don't think it was the hdd that failed) and put it into an external case so that she can get her work and files off?

Despite the fact I got home close to midnight and had to be up for 0430 for work, I just couldn't let this new machine sit in the box it was sitting there asking me to open the content. Me being the obedient women that I am I had to follow my heart.I opened the laptop, powered it, looked at it, admired my new lighted keypad and....went to bed. So my issue is this. Now that I have turn the computer on once now, how do I transfer all the content of my old laptop onto the new one? what do I look up to make the transfer?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Lion on an 27" iMac (first i7 iteration), and have a folder on an external HDD that contains a couple of hundred subfolders.
However - when viewing them in Finder, only the first hundred or so display.
The others are there - searching the disc finds the folders and their contents and, once, the contents are located, they'll display in the expanded view.
I copied the offending folder across to the Mac's main HD, but this behaviour came across with it. This, by the way, was happening on Snow Leopard too before I upgraded to Lion.

It can be done by clicking the master tab, then going to the Input 1-2 column setting and then clicking setting - mastering, etc.When I first did this a few weeks ago, there were many options such as hip hop mastering, electronic mastering, etc.Now, when I do so, I have different - much less enticing options and have no idea where the good ones went.
The usual health warning applies here - ie I'm new to MAC and completely flummoxed about how to view the contents of a DVD.

Shouldnt the disk appear over in the left hand side of Finder along with the Macintosh HD and Network etc?
I'm trying Disk Utilities to create a disk image, but it's taking hours. Shurely there has got t be an easier way.
I have searched quite a bit and I've read many different answers so I'm beginning to doubt if any are actually doable and if it is there is no easy answer. I have an antique Mac G4 PPC Dual 1.25 with 2 gb of ram and I have updated all of my hard drives internally as well as externally to SATA/ESATA and one usb 2 smaller drive so that leaves me with one small (160 gb ATA for OS 10.4.11 and along with another partition with OS 9 on it along with all of my apps on it.

So I moved all the stuff onto it and then when I connected the HD to my PC, it wouldn't come up. It comes up on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' thing but not in My Computer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just picked up this macbook refurbished that came with 1GB of ram. So I picked up 2 1GB sticks to replace the old ram. When I installed it I got a black screen. So I put one of the old(512MB) sticks back in and it booted up fine and read 1.5GB. So I ran a bunch of different combinations of new and old sticks to make sure that I did not have a bad piece of ram and all of them work fine, just not when I use 2 1GB sticks. I have to have one new and one old for it to work.

Our dvd drive on our Power Mac 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core intel.The drive is an Optiarc dvd rw ad-717a: sometimes will not read inserted discs. These discs work ok when tried on our I mac. Other discs work fine. This has occurred with discs that have bee writen in the drive as well as supplied discs.

I setup MS Entorage on the mac working with a Exchange Account. I am able to see all Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks. However, although I can see the folders in Tasks, I cannot see the contents of the folders! I get the following message "There are no messages in this folder".

Each artist has it's own folder with their albums located inside. View 2 Replies View RelatedHere's what I want to do: Share the contents of my DVD drive via SMB so I can watch flicks via my xbox. What I have done: I put my mac on the Workgroup network and when i put a DVD into the drive I right click on it and ->get into->share and it appears on my SMB share... no problem so far. Everytime I put a new dvd in, I have to go through the whole above process again as it very specifically only applies the share to that DVD, how can I do it so that the whole DVD drive is shared no matter which dvd is in? In sharing I have Share CD/DVD set to on, I had to turn off my firewall though otherwise it was saying "DVD or CD sharing: blocked by firewall". I also have file sharing set to on as... that's what google 'told me to do', so I thinks its actually file sharing and not DVD sharing..

I am able to access my PC-external drives via Parallell desktop and Windows XP on my Mac, but if possible I wouldnt like to open the XP at all at my Mac.
Transferring files from my PowerBook G4(1.5ghz/2gb Ram). I was using a flash drive for some stuff but I wanted to put some large video files on my external hard drive. I plugged in the Western Digital HD, 120Gb, but my powerbook would not read it. Is this because I originally used this hd on my pc? Or does the laptop not have enough juice to power the external?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy macbook pro cd drive seems to be acting up. It doesn't like to read any of my burnt cd/dvd-r, but it reads 'proper' and blank DVDs just fine (by 'proper' i mean like DVD movies, Apple Tiger OSX dvd, and such).. The discs that it refuses to read are fine, no scratches or anything. It takes the disc in, spins and tries to read it for about 3 times and spits it out. I've tried using those DVD lens cleaner discs with brushes on them.. but they didn't help. I've also tried resetting my PRAM (and the other one where you hold the power button for 5 seconds while shut down), and that didn't help either.. If it matters, my superdrive details are: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D: Firmware Revision:KCV9 My machine is bit over 2 years old, so it's no longer on warranty/AppleCare. Has anyone encountered this before?

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust bought Art Explosion 750,000 It read and installed disc 1, disc 2, 3 work. Won't read/recognize disc 4-5. Anybody tell why? I put the disc in the tray,nothing happens .I may hear a very faint sound like it's trying to start, then nothing. Sometimes it ejects it.

I have Fusion installed on my Mac, and it's all updated and runs fine, and I'm trying to install a program off a Windows-only CD. The problem is the drive in my Mac doesn't seem to accept it. It just ticks a few times and spits the CD back out. Is there a way around this? I've already been high and low on the VMWare site and it appears the virtual machine is communicating with the CD drive just fine.

I have been able to burn numerous CD's and DVD's but for some reason today when I tried to burn a CD it keeps spitting the blank CD out. I doesn't seem to recognize any disk. When I put a disk in it makes a quiet noise like it's trying to read it but after a few seconds spits it out. No application seems to recognize any disk either.

Double clicking on the file opens a blank page in Safari, whereas opening it using TextEdit gives me a whole bunch of code which is really hard to sift through..
I downloaded firefox which lets me read the words in the chatlog without the codings and whatnot, but the words aren't arranged properly and it just appears as one whole chunk of text.
I have a Mac Desktop G5, and it isn't reading burned DVD+R's. The DVD's work fine in our normal DVD player, but it won't even show up on my desktop. I can hear it spinning in there like it's trying to read it, but it just gives up.

If I select get info however in informs me I have 13GB available. I ran disk utility and it comes up that my HD appears to be o.k. Do I have a HD issue? Is there a way to fix this so it will read properly?
