MacBook :: Laptop Holds Charge Only In Sleep Mode / Shut Down

Jul 3, 2010

I tried SMC resets and everything. The Macbook takes a charge and charges normally when it is asleep, or off. It will charge to the max (96%). Battery has 349h load cycles. Charges when asleep or off. As soon as I power on the laptop or wake it up, it will stop charging. Battery holds the normal charge I usually get (3ish hours). Tried a few pram and smc zaps. Battery charger is a Hong Kong knockoff. Battery inside is genuine. 2008 Aluminum Macbook. Cleaned magsafe and port with q-tip and still to no avail.

When plugged in, it will run *off the battery* and the charger will show a green light and not trickle charge the battery. It will drain the battery, and then when it is drained it will run off the power. Check the screen shot. I am thinking that the charger is the culprit. Because it holds a charge when I let it charge while it is off. It will charge up just fine, in the two hours or whatever it takes to charge itself up. Battery usage is normal when it is running off the battery.

PowerPC :: Running DVD Player On Titanium Powerbook In Vertical Position?

May 26, 2008

I'm going on a day long driving trip with my kids later this week and I kludged together a good solution of bungee cords to hold my titanium PB to the back of a seat so I can play movies for them. I got a Sony car inverter that seems to output an appropriate amount of power for the PB. On a test drive around the block with the DVD running, the PB seemed to get pretty hot, but otherwise worked fine. Is there any reason why I shouldn't go ahead with this setup? Anything I'm likely to wreck?

MacBook Pro :: Lid Opening When Laptop Is Vertical - Due To Weak Magnets?

Dec 24, 2009

My laptop is only about 3 weeks old, and I notice that the gap on the right side is bigger than the left side when I close my computer's (15" 2.8GHz MBP) lid. I am guessing the magnet on the right is not as strong on the left side. Pics below..

I know a few guys have had problems with the lid opening when the laptop is vertical (due to weak magnets).. I dont want it to get to that stage. Right now it barely just holds on.

2nd problem is with my power brick. There is a definate gap between the socket and the brick itself. is this normal? Again pics below..

I am considering switching to a Mac Book Pro and have been told that it is capable of running windows operating systems. Does anyone have any experience with this and how well it works? The main reason for running Windows are two specific programs not available for Macs plus my company uses Microsoft Outlook for email. The model that I am looking to buy is the 15" 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory with NVDIA 9400M graphics.

MacBook Pro :: Failure Mode During Reboot Or Wakeup Laptop Retina Display / Screen Does Not Work

Aug 21, 2014

my mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina laptop is having Retina screen problems at startup, bootup and wakeup modes.  The main failure mode is, during reboot or wakeup the laptop's Retina display screen does not work, a blank Retina screen results, and the keyboard does not light up.  Also, at random times the laptop will just crash and self reboot, but then during reboot the Retina screen does not work but the computer reboots.  Additionally, this laptop, compared to my work's PC laptops is lightly used, mostly for web browsing, photo viewing and email. At first this problem was only intermittent, but now the Retina displace screen failure mode has become a chronic repeating failure mode and is happening almost everyday and stays in this Retina display failure mode for a longer period of time.  Additionally, this 2012 Macbook Pro Retina laptop had a failed graphics card within its first 4 months of light use, the failed graphics card had to be replaced.

MacBook Pro :: Swapping Hard Drive From Broken Laptop To New One - Both Running Mavericks

Sep 8, 2014

I have a 2011 macbook that has a motherboard that is broken, and that macbook has a terabyte Hard drive that was put in about a year ago after a broken hard drive was removed. Now I have bought a brand new macbook same model and I was advised by the apple store to take the old TB hard drive and swap it with the one in the new computer. I just want to know if by doing this I'm going to loose all of my files and programs by just swapping them. I have no back up anywhere just the files on the hard drive in the broken computer. So am I going to loose all of the files on the hard drive when I swap it? or will I have to get it backed up some how? They are both running Mavericks

Mac :: Stand That Will Hold Screen Vertical

Oct 14, 2010

I'm considering buying/making a stand for my MBP but have limited desk space, so what I ideally want is a stand which will hold my laptop, fully opened, with its screen completely vertical against, say, the wall behind my desk. If this is hard to imagine, think of it this way: say you're looking at the laptop from the right hand side, in it's normal open position it makes a kind of '9-o-clock' shape with the screen perfectly vertical and the keys perfectly horizontal. I'm looking for more of a '7-o-clock' but where the screen is raised to eye level, whilst still perfectly vertical

MacBook Pro :: Travelstar 7k500 Makes Noise In Vertical Position?

Apr 3, 2010

I recently replaced the hdd in my 13" MBP with a travelstar 7k500. It's fantastic: quiet, cool, fast, energy efficient. Really happy.

However, I did noticed yesterday when I was moving my laptop with the body at an 80 degree angle to the floor that the drive makes a strange noise that I haven't heard in other drives. It sounds almost strained. it's only at that angle - if it's completely vertical the drive is silent again.

I doubt this is anything to worry about, but I'm curious what is actually happening and whether there is something I can do about it? Anybody else with this drive have the same experience?

MacBook Pro :: Airport Only Works When In Clamshell Mode Mode

Aug 28, 2010

One day I was using my MBP open and external monitor hooked up. Everything was fine until the internet went down suddenly while I was using iChat.

My airport wouldn't see a network and after a couple restarts and a few resets my airport finally connected to my network. Once connected it would only issue a self-assigned IP, which obviously wouldn't work.

I was able to get around this by manually entering in the correct info but the speeds were low at best, usually pausing and stalling every minute.

After frustratingly trying get it to work, I entered clamshell mode because there was no reason at the time to have dual monitors. Once I did, viola, the airport kicked in and started working full force. It's been this way for about a month now.

My laptop is a MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.8 GHz processor and 4 GBs of RAM.

I've read that airports will have serious degradation issues if overheated and while that may be the issue, it doesn't seem to be the case.

I have smcFanControl installed and the MBP seems to be relatively cool to the touch. The fans never seem to be loudly kicking in and I have it raised on a fan powered cooling pad.

I do, though, use pretty much every port on my MBP. External monitor, speakers, both USBs, and firewire 800 are all in use, so maybe this is a resource issue or a very area specific heat issue.

I use my MBP w/ a external display, usb keyboard and magic mouse. I keep my MBP in clamshell mode all the time while stationed at my house. When I shut my computer down, everything is peachy, but then when I want to power up my computer, I wish there was a power button on my keyboard so I don't have to open my laptop up and press the power button, then shut it fast. Any way to set a f1 or f2 key to turn on my comp in clamshell mode? or maybe make my magic mouse turn on my computer through some setting

MacBook :: (not Pro) In Clamshell Mode?

Jun 3, 2012

I'm running my MacBook (not "Pro") in clamshell mode to drive two external monitors.  Am I risking anything by having the lid closed?[url] Please bear with me for a second.  I'm a long time Mac user—since the Mac Plus came out—and diehard Power Mac and Tiger fanatic, so I'm new to Mac-Intels and Snow Leopard. A full description of my MacBook setup is here:[url] This is my only Intel Mac.  I rescued it from the trash, literally, after my wife had discarded because of a bulging battery that was making the keyboard, trackpad and mouse inoperative.  I only use it to run Photoshop 13 ("CS6") which doesn't run on my Power Mac G5 Quad.

OS X :: MacBook Stuck In Clamshell Mode

Dec 26, 2009

I had a problem with my laptop where the lcd on the monitor does not always work, presumed to be due to a loose inverter cable or something similar to this. As a temporary solution I have been using an external monitor for the past few days. Depending on whether the laptop lcd is working, I have had it on both mirrored and dual monitor settings. However, this evening when I have come to use it, the external monitor is now the only one that is working. Options to turn off mirror display have now gone. Also, the button on my mouse pad no longer works, yet the pad itself does.

I have come to the conclusion that my laptop is in 'clamshell' mode. It remains on, and does not sleep when I close the lid. I have put it to sleep form the apple menu, disconnected the external monitor, and the opened the lid again, and when it turns back on from sleep, the screen flashes on for a second, but then goes to sleep again. I have tried turning it off, restarting, taking the battery out, everything I can think of, but unless the external monitor is connected it almost immediately goes back to sleep.
