Hardware :: MBP Freezes On Bootup Because Of Battery?
Aug 13, 2009
It's the strangest thing... On bootup my Mac freezes unless I have taken out the battery... Not an issue as 99% of the time I have it plugged in. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I don't know if I want to even bother bringing it in, regardless of the fact I'm covered under applecare as I'd have to drive 1-2hours or pay 50$ for parking to get to the two closest stores. I'm not buying a windows 7/vista laptop anytime soon but makes me wonder what kind of retarded flaws are built in to these things sometimes.
So it seems using a battery(new or older 15" MBP Battery) other than my own it will boot up fine. I spoke to an ex "Genius" he said he's had a few customers with the same issue, they ended up getting new batteries and sometimes a new charger and all was fine. I guess I'm ordering a new battery online. It's capacity has died over the last yr from minimal use so it must have been partially defective to begin with.

I'm working on a G4, 733 mhz Power pc running 10.4. After replacing the internal battery, computer freezes up at startup. I hear the chime, blue screen and OS X box appears with progress bar and then nothing happens.

Basically I need to boot from disk and reinstall osx without booting up the current install as my keyboard and trackpad don't work on bootup, but are recognised as it boots up as I'm able to put it into safe mode.

A couple of weeks ago my IMAC 24 started taking a long time to bootup, 5 minutes and 20 seconds.
It starts with a blank white screen for 1:45, then a black & white blinking world icon comes up for 2:15, then a blinking black & white Apple icon comes on for 30 seconds, then a pale blue blank screen for 20 seconds. Then the wallpaper comes on and it seems to go to a regular boot from there. Where can I access what is happening during all of this 5:20?

I have noticed that my white macbook bootup time is taking about a minute to boot. My Macbook now has 4gb or ram. I did run the memtest to check that the memory I installed is ok. It passed. Now I am bootup up with an external monitor plugged in. I am not sure if that is causing an issue. Is there an app I can get to test to make sure my mac is ok?

Recently had a costly hard drive replacement which was the result of the mac book pro refusing to boot up! I have, however, got a external hard drive which uses time machine to back up all of my documents. While it seemed to work perfectly, when I really needed it to work it has let me down! It doesn't display any of my photos or music or docs. I believe it could be a problem due to the fact it I've changed hard drive! Its a intel mac if that's info is needed.

I'm trying to determine, even after a visit to the Apple store and clean install, if my boot up time is sub-optimal. It's still taking over a minute to bootup to the desktop (from the start up sound). What's ya'lls times for booting up?

I have a problem with my installation of win 7 in bootcamp. Its on newest iMac 2.93 w. 4 gb of ram
Creating partition, formatting in win 7, installing goes fine. And everything looks to be in order.
When windows install is rebooting final time, its kinda hard to get dvd out so it wont boot from that. Normally it should just continue if no button is pressed, but it locks and doesnt go further.
I reboot holding left mouse btn and cdrom comes out. I then choose to boot from windows disk.
Heres the problem then again, its just black screen, except from one blinking cursor in top left corner.
Kinda feels like windows partition cant be booted from. though theres plenty of HDD activity in about 20 secs after black screen w blinking cursor.
Tried apples solution w graphics drivers on usb stick, but no go.
Tried both win 7 32 and 64 bit.

Just yesterday I went to reboot my iMac running OS X 10.5.5. I believe this is the first time I rebooted since the 10.5.5 install process, and I was shocked to see how long the reboot is now taking. In the past this was a 1-2 minute process.
The reboot was so slow I decided to try again to see if that was an one-off, but the delay was identical. I get the normal off-white re-boot screen with the spinning graphic. Then I drop into a solid off-blue screen (looks a lot like a crash) for approximately 10 minutes before my desktop background comes up and from there all seems nominal.
Has anybody else started to experience this long re-boot with 10.5.5? And if so, have you found any fixes and/or methods that can be used to speed the process up? Something is clearly wrong, though once I'm booted all is nominal, so it seems like the issue is only impacting the boot process.
I do have a friend who is using his Mac in a networked university environment, and when he installed 10.5.5, he couldn't boot/login at all, so it could be that there is some generic boot/login issue with 10.5.5.
In any case, I'd just like to get back to some semblance of nominal boot time.

I have a 2007 Santa Rose MBP and it has started to run very slow during the bootup and actual use of it. Here is how the bootup goes:
I turn it on and get the bong sound and a full white screen. In about 10 seconds I get the Apple log and in about another 10 seconds the circle that rotates as it boots up.
Then at about 2 minutes it changes color to a light blue color with the pointer on the screen. Then in about another 10 seconds changes to a darker shade of blue. At a total of 3 mins and 40 secs I then get the desktop with the space type background and in a couple more seconds the Mac OS X login screen. It takes around a minute until I am able to type anything. For awhile before that time I can type I get the beachball.
Here are the details of what I recently did:
I had a 250GB hard drive in my MBP running the newest version of Leopard. I was down to around 50GB free so I purchased a 640GB hard drive. I also was due to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I had an external USB enclosure that I could temporarily use. What I did is put the 640GB hard drive in that external enclosure and formatted it with the GUID partition table. I then used SuperDuper to mirror my internal hard drive to the external hard drive. I have a lot of programs installed and a lot data on my hard drive so didn't want to lose any of this.
Once the mirroring of my internal hard drive was completed to my external 640GB hard drive I then booted from that drive (using it externally and selecting option at bootup). Things seemed to run fine with no issues.
I then after booting up from this external hard drive did a Snow Leopard upgrade to this external hard drive. Once again this external hard drive appeared to run perfectly normal.
After things seemed to be okay I then opened up the MBP and swapped hard drives so the 640GB drive was my new internal HD. I then booted and once again I used it some and things appeared to work normally.
After this later in the evening I installed two programs, Final Cut Studio 3 and Logic Studio 9. As far as I can remember my computer was acting a little odd and after a reboot that is when all the above issues started.
As far as I can tell this never started until those two installs. Is it a chance I didn't try it out enough but I remember even with the HD being external USB my system appeared to run faster than ever. I even think the program didn't start with Final Cut Studio but started with Logic Studio 9
Any idea of what caused this? Even after my computer running it's VERY slow to the point of being almost unusable. For example if I open Word it takes 3 minutes or so to open. Almost any action causes the beachball to appear.
After looking at the Apple site I did both a PRAM erase (using Command Option P and N) and also a SMC reset by removing the battery and power cord and pressing the power button for over 5 seconds and neither fixed it.
I opened up Disk Utility and did a Verify Permission and got the following information:
Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired.

Since it said it didn't repair it I did a Repair Disk Permissions but that didn't seem to fix it.

Every once in a while, my mid-2010 15" i5 MBP sits at the greyish Apple logo screen, after the "bong," with the wheel spinning forever. If I shut down and reboot, I'm at a log-on screen in about 15 seconds (which is my typical boot time, as I have an SSD). This is my first Mac after a long time on PCs, so I've got no idea where to start. All the posts I've found by searching pertain to earlier model machines using HDDs where the user can't get a boot at all; I'm only seeing this weirdness periodically.

One of my macs is an older Power PC G4 867GHZ 1.5G Ram and it is running OS 9.2.2. I have software on it that has been rock solid for a while and thus I haven't upgraded that machine. The main boot up drive is starting to give me errors and crash and I cannot repair the issues with normal tools. I want to clone the internal startup drive to an external drive to use as the boot up. Is this possible with something like SuperDuper or is this even possible to do at all in 9.2.2?

Before I opened it and cleaned it, it was going into safe boot, and even upon disconnecting everything except power and video, it still went into safe boot. It was then I decided I might as well clean it anyways. I cleaned off all the dust inside, down to the heatsinks, graphics card and everything. Reapplied new thermal grease to the CPUs and put everything back together. Now when I boot it nothing shows up on my screen and the fan for the graphics card runs at full speed, though everything else sounds normal. I booted it with just the power and video cable attached and got the same result.
Specs are as follows:
Early 2006 Mac Pro
2.66 Dual Core Xeons (x2)
6GB Ram
ATI x1900XT graphics card
250GB HDD
Single super drive.

Since aquiring my own Mac G4 digital audio for dirt cheap (£0 ) I've been reassembling the peices. It works entirely, but I have a strange problem with the optical drives. Since the guy I had got it from removed almost everything (RAM, CD/DVD, HDD), I used spare parts to get it running. It boots into OSX 10.5 fine and everything seems to work ok, but upon powering the mac up, it ejects the DVD drive tray when the gray screen shows. It's done it with every drive I have tried and stops me from booting from CDs.
Is there any reason it could be doing this? These drives I know work 100%.

Last night I installed Leopard's Graphic Update. I can't boot my macbook since then. Stuck at the gray screen with apple logo. Here's what I already tried to do: Boot with leopard DVD and run Repair Disk - it tells me the disk appears to be ok. If I click on repair permissions tough, it takes a long time and then hangs. Nothing happens, the progress bar even stops spinning.
I then tried to boot with Disk Warrior 4.0 (it's the version I have). I tried reparing disk and files permissions there, and it worked ok. But I can't boot after it as well. Again in Disk Warrior, I tried clicking REBUILD to get my file directory back and retrieve my files, but after some seconds it states there is not enough memory. I hope this is RAM memory, because I just ordered a pair of ram chips, Im gonna upgrade it to 2gb (I only have 512mb ram, first gen intel macbook core duo)
So tried SAFE MODE (shift), nothing. Single user mode, typing fcsk -y , reports the disk is ok, but nothing as well. I have a time machine backup from 11 days ago (apple makes it so easy to backup and I cant even bother plugging in my lacie firewire external hd, retarded me), and for me that's kind of unnaceptable. I go to university and thats 2 weeks worth of priceless annotations, I really need to get them back.

Just bought a used ibook G4 from ebay for my sister and was giving it the once-over. did a software update and installed 10.5.3 (no backup first!). BTW, the computer didn't come with any installation discs

So my computer froze while I was waking it up from it's nap, so I restarted it by holding down the power button. It now shows me the gray screen, apple sign and spinning circle for about a minute before it's decided it's done and would like to turn itself off. I have tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC. I have tried restarting in safe mode. I tried to restart it off the AC adapter without the battery. I hear the chime, I see the apple, and the status circle, and then nothing!

I'm just wondering if there is a bandwidth monitor widget that doesn't reset itself on a reboot. I feel like I've tried hundreds from the Apple widget download page, but all reset themselves. It's not vital that I know how much bandwidth I use as I've got unlimited broadband, but it would be interesting to see how much I get through in a week/month/year.
Is there a monitor that will allow you to view the bandwidth on an IP address you specify? I want to be able to monitor all traffic coming in and out of my router, but I can't find an App that does this either. All they monitor is my local IP address 192.XXX.XXX.XXX (Specific to my iMac). I have a static IP address with my broadband so can I monitor traffic flowing through that? Or would I just need to monitor the routers network and/or broadcast address?

I have Vista/OSX installed on my 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008). When I'm attempting to switch OS by holding alt/option during the loadup, it's no longer detecting the keypress. I have the USB wired Apple keyboard fed through my 24in dell monitor and then connected to a USB spot on the back of my mac. I've noticed that when I plug the keyboard directly into the USB on the front of the Mac, the keypress is detected just fine. The weird part is that the way I have it set up now (with the keyboard connecting through the monitor) used to work without a problem to get to the OS load screen. I recently had to reinstall OSX because of a hard drive failure and ever since, it's not detecting. It's annoying to have to unplug/replug my keyboard, just to boot in windows.

Ive had my macbook for about 2 months and its seemed to working just fine. However today while listening to music it decided to lock up and freeze for a good minute before it would unlock and continue playing the music through itunes. It did this a few times so I finally decided to restart the computer. The first time I booted it it froze on the apple logo and the loading circle. I killed it and rebooted, it takes about four to five minutes to get to the desktop picture, and another five to pull up the main menu bar. I am going to let it sit over night and see if it gives me any error messages, however; I still haven't seen the dock at all, and ive let it start for about twenty minutes now. It will usually show the top menu bar and then the mouse will give me the sbod while it slowly loads up the top menu bar, and usually the clock is a good few minutes behind.
I have tried a pram zap, draining the power off the board, checking the sata connection, unplugging the power, and I ran a hardware check at start up and it said everything was ok. I am currently typing on my tank of a toshiba laptop that still works after being dropped multiple times and has been heavily used for a good 3 years. The mac has been completely useless is most work situations. Its a refurbished 2.53ghz 4gb ram 9600m 512mb 15" mbp. I am thinking of reformatting it and hoping it works, and then selling it and using the money for a new toshiba or a custom built desktop, because I just cant deal with the amount of money and time I have lost trying to deal with this thing while I could have been getting work done.
