MacBook Pro :: Flashing Grey Globe Of The Earth At Bootup
Feb 2, 2012The one I'm currently using had a problem and needed to have the hard drive replaced, which was done by a local Apple store. They were also very kind to reload Lion once the drive was replaced. I reconnected the machine to our domain here at work yesterday and have been experencing very long bootup's. During the boot process I'm receiving a flashing grey Globe of the Earth, prior to seeing the Apple logo. Once I see the Apple logo things seem to proceed normally and the machine completes the boot process. Does anyone know what this grey Globe of the Earth means? and what I may need to do to satisfy whatever is causing it. Â

MacBook :: No Bootup - Shuts Down Itself After Logo Screen
Feb 24, 2009So my computer froze while I was waking it up from it's nap, so I restarted it by holding down the power button. It now shows me the gray screen, apple sign and spinning circle for about a minute before it's decided it's done and would like to turn itself off. I have tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC. I have tried restarting in safe mode. I tried to restart it off the AC adapter without the battery. I hear the chime, I see the apple, and the status circle, and then nothing!

nothing... we are on a network in a school district so my next step is to re-image it but wondering if there is something else I should try first

Dec 5, 2014I have a macbook pro retina display mid 2012 model. When i boot up i hear a chime but screen is black. I wait a few min to allow it to finish booting up with a black screen. I close the mac book for a few minutes to let it fall asleep. When i open it , screen works and im on login screen.

MacBook Pro :: Stuck At Bootup Screen - Early 2011
Jun 24, 2014I switched out my HDD for an SSD and switched out my superdrive for the HDD. It was working fine for the past 6 months or so.Â
So, yesterday I plugged in my Macbook and started it up from hibernation. I then proceeded to launch chrome and as it tried to restore my last session (with like 5 or 6 YouTube tabs), it crashed. I tried closing it and re-opening it, but no cigar. I then thought to just open safari, but a no network detected warning came up. When trying to resolve that, an "unapproved caller" error came up.Â
I then tried to restore my computer from a TM backup, but was unable to due to it being unable to unmount the drive, then I tried just erasing the drive, nope.Â
I then decided to take the dang SSD out of the internal SATA connector and plugged it in through an external enclosure, that worked and I was able to restore my TM backup that way.Â
So bottom line, I can boot up from USB fine, but when I plug it into the internal SATA connector my MBP gets stuck at the apple logo. I've tried booting into safe mode, resetting the NVRAM and PVRAM. No luck. From what I've seen, it seems that I may have a bad SATA connector that needs to be replaced?Â

Feb 23, 2010Whenever I start up my macbook it stayed on grey background with an apple logo and spinning thing. I press and hold the shift key once and it went to safe mode and did my diagnostic and found out that some file got corrupted so I thought maybe I'll just do another start up and everything will go back to normal. Then I restart it again but this time it wont past that grey back ground w/ apple logo w/ spinning thing again. I tried to do the safe mode again and it won't let me anymore. I went to apple site and i found a bunch of keyboard shortcuts, non of those help me. Any here have any idea what might happen to my MacBook. I'm in Kazahstan for work related trip and they don't use Mac here so there is no where I can buy another snowleaopard cd.

Apr 7, 2007I have a 1.83 MBP, with 1.5 gigs of RAM (stock 512 + additional crucial 1gb) 80 gig HD. Pretty standard.My issue is that once in a while when I restart my machine, bootup is really slow and then I get a weird screen glitch. Often I won't get a full re-boot but will get a half appearing dock and no desktop icons. Sometimes it will have lots of grainy lines across it. Sometimes I will get the beach ball for extended times and it will just freeze there. Basically I keep restarting it, and eventually it goes away and boots up normal.
The thing is I can't really replicate the problem. It just happens at random. Sometimes it happens after I have a system crash, and I need to restart, and sometimes it happens just after a system update restart.Like I said, it doesn't happen that often, but when it does it kind of freaks me out. I've had the logic board replaced in the past to eliminate the "whinning" (which, thankfully is now gone) and I wonder if this is another logic board problem. Other than that the computer has been great. And upon the complementary Applecare expiring pretty soon, I wonder if I should take it in for a repair or just not worry about it. It's kind of hard to take it in if I can't really show them the problem.

Nov 30, 2014grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (I think it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.Â

Jun 5, 2008Just bought a used ibook G4 from ebay for my sister and was giving it the once-over. did a software update and installed 10.5.3 (no backup first!). It installed ok, but after restarting it just sits on a black screen and goes nowhere. It plays the on chimes and churns the DVD drive, but then nothing. BTW, the computer didn't come with any installation discs

Aug 29, 2009When my son's computer is turned on it just goes to grey screen.. I've tried a number of troubleshooting things...starting while holding "c" to boot with install disk...starting holding "shift" for safe boot. I did the PRM (?) reset thing holding Apple-option-p-r keys while starting and that did add the start up chime...before it would just go to the grey screen, no chime no spinning wheel...but still no boot.The computer is still under warranty but soonest appointment at Apple Store is 3 days from now!!!

Aug 13, 2010I have a weird problem going on currently. My 13 inch macbook pro (2009) works PERFECT but I've tried 3 times to update to the OSX to 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 and everytime the update works but after it reboots I get the grey screen of death.
When I have a time capable backup which I restore from when this happens so its not a big deal however whenever I restore I no longer have access to the old history. It's like the drive cannot go back in time. Is this normal?

Apr 20, 2012I tried to install 10.6 on my 10.5.8 Macbook Pro. It installed just fine, I restarted, it goes through the apple logo and asks me to pick a language. I pick english, it goes to the grey screen and stops there forever. I'd be happy just to go back to 10.5.8, I just don't want to lose all my stuff.Also, all the function buttons work (volume, adjust screen brightness, etc). Just nothing else will.

Apr 25, 2012Okay well, to start off, I got my MacBook from a distant family member who got a new one so they let me have their old one. They got it from a pawn shop so I don't have the disk that we got the OS from but it hasn't had any issues UNTIL NOW. I need to use my laptop for a homework assignment. Everytime I turn it on it'll just stay on the loading screen, I left it for 4 hours yesterday and it still wouldn't work. I reset the (insert acronym here) thing already, the thing where you press control, option, P, R keys at start up. because my assignment is on the laptop and it's due tomorrow.

May 25, 2012My Macbook Pro (2008) was upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 before I bought it used. It's always been slow and after a little while it won't boot up properly, it only gets as far as the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath.
I've have used Recovery HD and Disk Utility to repair/verify the hard drive and after the repair it still won't boot up past the apple logo. I downloaded OSX Lion 10.7.4 (client combo) update onto an external drive but I can't install the update when using Recovery HD. I've tried mounting the existing hard drive onto an external drive, but I get an error mesage immediately.
There are only a few folders I need to take from the existing hard drive in the Macbook Pro. What can I do to either access my hard drive or get it to boot up properly? I have a retail copy of a Snow Leopard DVD that I can use. I believe I might have saved Lion onto a DVD a while ago, but Apple seems to insist we intall by downloading the latest Lion? Basically I need to access the hard drive without erasing the data.

Dec 4, 2014i Was surfing the Internet and all of the sudden my computer turned blue. I closed the screen to 'refresh' it and when I opened it back up some of the pixels seemed to be missing and then it started beeping at me in increments of 3. I **** it down and tried to restart it. when the screen booted up it still seemed to me that the pixels were screwed up. I've managed to get past the blinking image of the earth, however after that disappears a grey screen comes up for about a minute or two and then the entire computer shuts down. This is in the middle of my finals and I cannot lose any of my work!

Jun 21, 2009ok my macbook wont boot. i hit the power button, i hear the cd drive move, grey screen comes up with the apply logo and the little progress loading spinner thing, boot sound rings, then it goes to a dark blue screen for a second then it turns a lighter blue and the cursor is there and i can move it around, and then nothing happens it just sits there
i tried holding command/option/p/r till i heard the boot noise twice then let go and it stopped at the blue screen again. i didnt download anything new or change any permissions or system settings, just powered off last night and went to turn it on this morning and this happened
MacBook Pro :: Grey Spots Around Edges Of Screen?
Sep 4, 2008The first week I had my Macbook Pro I noticed about 5 or 6 little grey splotches on the right hand edge of the screen. About a month later tons of them had formed on the top edge in a cluster. I didn't take my computer in because it wasn't that noticable, only at an angle. Well it's been 9 months, and there's now spots on the left hand side, and it's spreading. A week ago they started to appear on the bottom on the screen, and all the spots on all the other edges are forming rings around them.
I took it to my tech at our school since they sold us the laptops, and he said the spots were too small for water damage, and that he's never seen anything like it before. So I took it into the apple store THINKING they would replace it, instead they told me it had to be water damage and that was that. I've never spilled anything on this computer, and the spots started the week I got it. No matter how many times i explained the situation to those people, they just kept repeating "I'm not saying that you're lying, but we dont know what was actually done to the computer, we say it's water damage, which isn't covered" and refused to fix it.
Its just a bunch of little grey dots clustered together, some are a little spread out but as the weeks go by it just gets worse.
I'm not really sure what else to do at this point, the apple store obviously wasnt a big help. And I still have no idea what it is, i just know that this computer is extremely important to my schooling, it doesn't get banged around, i dont even eat around it. Has anyone seen anything like this?

When trying to turn it on it goes to a grey screen and nothing pops up, eventually a little picture pops up that has what looks like a folder with a question mark in the middle. I then tried booting from the CD and when trying to do that a picture of the world pops up and then also the folder with the question mark in the middle. I thought i may have been the harddrive so i bought a new one and it still has the same problem.

MacBook :: Grey And Light Spots Behind Screen?
Jan 29, 2010I just bought a Black, 2007 MacBook for $500 from eBay. In my excitement, I had forgotten to ask the seller of the cosmetic condition, who had negelected to mention it, and now that I have it, I notice some dark spots behind the screen.
I say behind because they appear behind the pixels; if you roll rext over it it is clear that they are not dead pixels, and the spots are under them.
The spots look sort of like somebody painted the back of the screen in Photoshop's dissolve mode - little light grey spots around a darker grey center with dusty dots surrounding it.
If you look at it at the right angle, you can also see white spots (The grey spots will also turn white at this angle)
My question is, can it be fixed, and about how much will it cost?

May 30, 2010About two weeks ago I'm using my snow leopard partition of my macbook pro and browsing the internet via firefox. My mouse freezes for a second, and then my computer just shuts down. I power back up my macbook pro to find a 'cancel or prohibitory symbol'. Strange thing is I can hold down option and boot into my windows partition no problem I go through all the motions suggested by the apple website, such as resetting the PRAM etc.. Nothing works. Flash forward to today. I finally get a hold of my snow leopard installation disc and boot my macbook with it. I run the disk utility and it finds that my hard drive's good to go.
I read online and it seems that the best option would be to install snow leopard again. I decide install it again, but about halfway through the installation, the installation fails and pretty much freezes. I had to shut down the macbook via the power button. Now, whenever I try to boot up my macbook I hear the chime, but nothing happens after that. I am just left with a grey screen. I cannot enter safe mode, single user mode, and when I try to choose the start up disk by holding down option, the arrow pops up to choose which disk to pick, but there are no disks to choose from.
