Hardware :: Looking For CD / DVD Burner / Player For IMac G5?
Jul 18, 2009
I am looking for some advice re the purchasing of an external cd/dvd burner/player for my iMac as the optical superdrive on my iMac G5 has started to spit out my blank dvd`s when I insert them. I have tried several types of cd`s/dvd`s in the drive and even got myself a head cleaning kit to try that but it is still spitting them out.It will however play already previously recorded cd`s and dvd`s o.k. but just spits out the blank ones after a few minutes.
What brought all this to a head now was because I just recently received an HD camcorder and wanted to be able to take the video clips from it and process them, and burn them to a dvd so that I could play them on my dvd player and let my daughter have a copy. I would like to be able to burn them as HD files if that is possible as my camcorder records in HD and I have an HD ready TV.
Could anyone give me some good sound advice as to what software to purchase for processing the video clips - as HD if possible - and what would you recommend as an external dvd drive/player to purchase so as to be able to burn the processed clips to and play them back on my computer as well as my T.V. I`ve done a search on the internet for drives and software etc. but to be honest all the different types and variety and all the technical jargon etc. has just left me totally confused.
For your information I`m an old aged pensioner trying to keep up as best I can and I am not loaded with money so whatever I get now that will be it for a long time. Truth be told that is why I came on here to seek advice from people who understand about these things and have experience with them.
I'm wondering if there is a product like this available... ideally it would be a attractive external Blu-Ray burner/player that I could connect to my Mac Pro to burn/read Blu-Ray discs (FW800 would be a bonus ), and then transfer to the living room to connect to my TV and view DVDs and Blu-Ray discs in 1080p.
latest external Blu-Ray player and burner compatible with iMac?I cannot get a real clear answer anywhere.... It also needs to run in both OSX Lion and Windows through Parallels software..... can I have makes and models and what is he best iMac software to use?
I have recently bought a 21.5 inch imac! I want want to know how to hook my bluray player up to it and use my imac as a display! I want to get the best possible resolution when watching movies or what not! Is there a website to view videos or movies in full 1080p?
A friend has a MacBook and it has a CD/DVD player application (software). I have a year-old iMac and cannot find the file - it is not under Applications and doesn't show up in Spotlight. Can I download it from someplace?
When I play a DVD movie, everything is fine for about an hour and then the drive says that it cannot "Read the Disc". I have had the problem with 6 different DVD's so I don't think the media is the problem.
I've tried everything to get this thing to install, but after downloading nothing happens. I have no flash player on my Mac. I've spent hours trying to follow Adobe instructions, but I'm just going around in circles.
Recently Flash videos (like on FB and Netflix) won't run and say to install Flash, which I have. So, I reinstall Flash and it still won't play and says to install Flash...

I'm thinking of buying myself a Sony BluRay player for Xmas, is there currently any solution so that I can hook it up to the iMacs video-in port whilst working successfully?
I have an iMac and a Mac Book Pro. On the iMac, Flash Player works fine on Youtube, etc. EXCEPT within Facebook. When I click on a video within Facebook it appears to load the viewing pane but the video never starts. No error messages. I have reinstalled Maverick OS/X, done a clean uninstall/reinstall of Adobe Flash Player, checked all settings, still have the problem. It works fine on the Mac Book Pro, both computers are using the same version of MAC OS/X and Flash Player with the same settings. Obviously there is something different on the iMac but I'm unable to
For the last month or so I've been getting pop up messages on my system that I have to update Flash Payer.
I click the link, download the installation dmg, double click the installer, 4/5ths of the way through it says it can't complete the operation. (I close all browsers etc. )
Google Chrome is running the latest version of Flash as it does it automatically (v14), but Safari and presumably anything else that uses Flash is running v13.
have in the past few weeks uprgraded from tiger to leopard.Everything has been ok but i think i might have deleted some vital part of Quicktime player when i tried to clean up.I only realised this when i decided to get Quicktime player pro which i have paid for and have the key..I have tried to download quicktime from apple support website and just about any other website for that matter but zero.zilch.Installer takes me through the process but i get no player.
I have tried to remove all components of quicktime but to no avail.the download intalls but goes nowhere.Have tried to maybe 'jumpstart' it by double clicking quicktime time movies but there is just nothing going on.

Digital movies play just fine on my camera, a NIkon Coolpix but once I import them to either quicktime or windows media player they do not play smoothly. Any ideas why or what I can do to correct this?
Info: quicktime or windows media player , Windows XP, camera digital films won't play
My music library is on my iMac, located in a different room of the house than my home theater system with a decent Denon receiver and good Infinity towers. I have an iPod connector to the Denon which I can use, but the iPod has a limited library of songs, so I would like to somehow access my iMac music library and be able to play it through the home theater system. Hard wiring the components is out of the question due to length of run through several rooms of the house, no basement and cathedral ceilings. I already have my iMac and my Panasonic Blu-Ray player both connected to my wi-fi, and it seems there should be a way to connect both of them using the wi-fi. The blu-ray player is DLNA, but the Mac isn't, so that is out of the question. Is there any other way to get these components to talk to each other over wi-fi?
I had a dvd in the drive of my imac and it had no idea it was there. it wasn't on my desktop and it wasn't listed under devices. I tried to open the dvd player, and it told me that there was no supported disc. After I ejected and reinserted it, it worked. Was this just a mac brain fart?
Running mid-2009 iMac with latest Mavericks 10.9.4.
DVD Player has been performing perfectly in Snow Leopard until this update to Mavericks.
I've tried resetting SMC/NVRAM. Reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Tried dumping the plist too. That did nothing. I've re-set SMC/NVRAM...done the Permissions using Disc Utility.
I can get a DVD to load selecting the Recovery Mode StartUp disk. Then I reboot and the DVD plays fine using the DVD controls. But ejecting and trying it again - it won't play.
About a week ago, we accidentally installed what we think is a bad version of a flash player when attempting to register a rewards card. We un-installed the software as soon as we realized it was not the correct website for the rewards card. Since then, we are getting a flashing pop-up ad in the right column of the browser as well as a video window that pops-up from left bottom of browser and then multiple windows in Safari will just open.
I have an external drive to store all my movies since I have no room on my iMac. I'd also like to watch my movies on other computers and I was wondering if there's a movie player that can be installed on the external drive to watch some movies like (.mkv) and so on.
