Applications :: IPhoto 2009 - How To Confirm Different Name During Confirm Name Process

Jan 28, 2009

When "Confirming Names" in the "XXXXX may also be in the photos below" section of Faces, is it possible to change or choose a name other than the Face you are within? Is there an option to do this - I cannot find it?

For example, I have a Face named "Christine" with numerous photos of Christine already confirmed. I also have numerous photos shown in the section "Christine may also be in the photos below".

Hardware :: Tests Confirm Apple's 27" IMac Only Supports DisplayPort Input

Oct 26, 2009

Third party testing has confirmed that Apple's new 27" iMac can only be used as an external display for devices designed to provide DisplayPort video. It will not work with any equipment that only supports VGA, DVI, or HDMI output.

In a follow-up to its teardown of the 27" iMac last week, iFixit said it revisited the new hardware to see if it could display high-definition video from a non-DisplayPort external source.

The results of the testing indicate that Apple's stated specifications for the iMac were correct; while video input worked as expected with a 13" MacBook Pro equipped with Mini DisplayPort, all attempts to use a physical adapter dongle to supply alternative video signals to the new 27" iMac failed.

"The iMac will not act as a second (or primary) display using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter that Apple sells," the group's website stated. "We tried it on a PS3 Slim, as well as a MacBook and MacBook Pro. It looks like we'll have to wait for a special adapter from Apple or a third party."

A one way street

According to Apple's stated specifications however, the 27" iMac's video input feature will only ever work with DisplayPort devices, and no physical adapter will change that fact.

Apple has frequently used converter dongles on its notebooks in order to support multiple types of video output signaling via the same port. For example, previous notebook models provided Mini-DVI ports proprietary to Apple which could deliver both VGA and DVI outputs using the appropriate connector. These ports provided multiple signaling types over the same physical pins.

Apple's modern machines similarly all supply a Mini DisplayPort connector (originally designed by Apple but now part of the official DisplayPort specification); using the right connector, users can extract and output any video signal type supported by the computer, including VGA, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

VGA is analog video; DVI and HDMI are both digital, electrically compatible, serial video data formats that only differ in their physical connectors; DisplayPort is an entirely new format that uses a packet signaling format.

The iMac's Mini DisplayPort supports output of all three, but can only input and display DisplayPort video. Unlike moving from DVI to HDMI, converting a DVI signal to DisplayPort requires more than a cheap physical dongle; it would necessitate a relatively expensive converter box to process the signal into a completely new format and possibly also a scaler to match the output device to the 27" iMac's enormous resolution of 2560x1440.

This prevents the new iMac from serving as an HDTV-style output source for older DVI-based computers or HDMI-output devices such as the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Apple TV, or standard DVD and Blu-Ray players. Future devices that support the DisplayPort standard will work, of course.

Why no DVI or HDMI input is supported

The 27" iMac's inability to input DVI video is rooted in the fact that the DisplayPort specification is uniquely designed to work as both an internal (video card to built-in display) and external (PC to monitor) video signaling system.

Non-DisplayPort systems typically use LVDS for internal video cabling and DVI for external video connectors. No Apple computers supply any sort of internal DVI input to support driving their built-in LCD via the DVI port using an external computer.

Apple's existing MacBooks, Mac mini, Mac Pro, and the smaller new 21.5" iMac model do not support video input at all. The company's 24" LED Cinema Display is the only other device that currently supports (and only supports) DisplayPort input. The 30" Cinema Display HD only supports DVI input, but not DisplayPort.

Hardware :: Looking For CD / DVD Burner / Player For IMac G5?

Jul 18, 2009

I am looking for some advice re the purchasing of an external cd/dvd burner/player for my iMac as the optical superdrive on my iMac G5 has started to spit out my blank dvd`s when I insert them. I have tried several types of cd`s/dvd`s in the drive and even got myself a head cleaning kit to try that but it is still spitting them out.It will however play already previously recorded cd`s and dvd`s o.k. but just spits out the blank ones after a few minutes.

What brought all this to a head now was because I just recently received an HD camcorder and wanted to be able to take the video clips from it and process them, and burn them to a dvd so that I could play them on my dvd player and let my daughter have a copy. I would like to be able to burn them as HD files if that is possible as my camcorder records in HD and I have an HD ready TV.

Could anyone give me some good sound advice as to what software to purchase for processing the video clips - as HD if possible - and what would you recommend as an external dvd drive/player to purchase so as to be able to burn the processed clips to and play them back on my computer as well as my T.V. I`ve done a search on the internet for drives and software etc. but to be honest all the different types and variety and all the technical jargon etc. has just left me totally confused.

For your information I`m an old aged pensioner trying to keep up as best I can and I am not loaded with money so whatever I get now that will be it for a long time. Truth be told that is why I came on here to seek advice from people who understand about these things and have experience with them.

MacBook :: Confirm That The 3,1 Takes Up To 6mb Of Ram

May 1, 2012

I'm trying to confirm that the MacBook 3,1 takes up to 6mb of ram. Which means to max out, I can use a 4gb module, and a 2bg module. Its a little confusing, because I found this info into on 2 memory sites, but the apple site does not seem to indicate this usage.  I always thought it needed to be in equal pairs.

MacBook Air :: Getting Core Shutdown - Any Way To Confirm?

Jun 21, 2008

I think I am getting the well publicized core shutdown with my MBA but I can't be sure. I will be doing a task and things like expose will be as smooth as can be but then all of a sudden it slows to a complete halt, everything lags, expose is jerky, cmd+tab takes ages to switch application and keystrokes such as typing take seconds to appear. For a good 5+ mins the computer becomes totally useless. Is this what a core shutdown does to the computer? Is there an application I can use to monitor how many cores are running? I looked in the activity monitor but couldn't find information about how many cores are running. I have used smc control to monitor my cpu temp and I sometimes turn the exhaust up to max rpm before I watch a video or do something that has been causing the core shutdown (if thats what it is) in an attempt to try and keep the cpu cooler.

I have read about coolbook but I don't fancy paying for an application to stop a fault that shouldn't be happening. Are Apple fixing these faults? Is this a problem with ALL MacBook Airs? I ask this because there seem to be two groups of people. People that don't experience this (or say they don't, maybe don't want to admit a fault with there new shiny toy?) and people who have had 3-4 machines all with the same problem. I would love to know if this is indeed a core shutdown fault and if Apple replace it for me as it is becoming increasingly frustrating and not acceptable for a $1200 computer. Would also like to hear from people that have had the core shutdown fault fixed or replaced from Apple and if it has fixed the problem, or if it still exists.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Setup And Confirm RAID Mirror

May 23, 2012

Literally just got shiny new miniMac Server with the dual 70GB internakky hard drives/disks with OS X 10.7.$ LION pre-installed. What a nice machine in a super cool box Seemed to bootup and run fine! Now my issue (there will be more for this MAC newbie):How to setup AND more importantly (item B below) CONFIRM that a RAID MIRROR is working? Want nothing fancier than 2-nd drive is exact duplicate of 1-st drive at all times. That is, an 'active and full up-to -the second" backup of the main 1-st drive.I have done nothing to 1-st drive as it came from APPLE.When I try to setup RAID set using DISK Utility, I get message about system(1-st drive) can't be used in a RAID or such.

yet I can add 2-nd drive to what I tink is a RAID set and then 'Enable' it.It seems to add another entry to thr left-side of drves list panel but not sure that 1-st and 2-nd drives are BOTH in the new "RAID SET' or that the set just consists of the "single" 2-nd disk? B. I don't think that 1-st drive data is actually being duplicated to 2-nd drive. For instance, how do I know that it was 'caught up' to match 1-st drive AND then is [code]
