I had a dvd in the drive of my imac and it had no idea it was there. it wasn't on my desktop and it wasn't listed under devices. I tried to open the dvd player, and it told me that there was no supported disc. After I ejected and reinserted it, it worked. Was this just a mac brain fart?

Last week I put an extra hard drive into a powermac G4 - i didnt know if the hardrive was working or not, and I was asked to put both Harddrives in the one machine to find out if it was working. I did this and nothing happened. I changed the jumpers and still nothing happened.
the existing hardrive was being read but not the new one that I had put in, so I went to start up disk and changed the disk that I was starting up from to the other hardrive. It wouldnt boot, i took the hardrive out and tried to put the computer back to its original state and nothing happened. just a blank screen. I have tried pressing OPT and the hardrive appears but after this screen nothing happens. if I were to use the install disc, would this wipe the hard-drive at all?
Updated my late 2007 iMac to 10.6.2 and after that every time I pop in a DVD or CD into the optical drive it spins up and then I get a dialog box that tells me that I have put in an empty disc and the question what I want to do. Can't read them in itunes or DVD player (or any other program). Is it just coincidence that this happened just when I updated. The drive is an OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to burn a DVD of files I want to back up from my computer, and it gives me this error when I try to burn a DVD from the folder that my files are in. Finder gives no mention that there is a DVD in the DVD-drive, but it does pop-up with a message recognizing that a DVD was inserted initially. My drive has been working fine in the past, so this is something that has just recently happened to my computer. Does anyone have any ideas about this? My computer specifications are in my signature below and I'm running leopard 10.5.6.
The specific error message that I get is this "the disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported." I did a google of this, but the results turned up stuff relating to 10.3 and 10.4, neither of which being relevant to my situation
I recently installed a Pioneer DVR-112D in my PowerMac G5 (10.3.9) after my original optical drive stopped reading DVDs. This new drive now reads previously burned CDs and DVDs just fine, but gives me the following message when trying to burn blank CDs and DVDs: The disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. I made a backup image file of D2 LOD and im trying to install it again but the installer keeps telling me that i need to insert disc. So my question is, how do i mount this image so that the installer can use it.
Clarification: I lost the original cd so i just have this backed up image, so the image is legit.I just wanted to play this game and i dont wanna have to go buy the disk again.
When I play a DVD movie, everything is fine for about an hour and then the drive says that it cannot "Read the Disc". I have had the problem with 6 different DVD's so I don't think the media is the problem.

I've got a PowerPC G5 running 10.4. After four years of dedicated service, my Superdrive gave out, so I bought a Sony drive (SONY DVD RW DRU-842A in profiler) to replace it. Here's the trouble:
Any time the machine goes to sleep with a disc in the drive, it won't eject when I wake it up. I have to restart, then eject. Other than that, the drive works beautifully. If this question has been answered elsewhere, please redirect me there, sorry for the repost.
Speaking of sleep, when I put the machine to sleep through the menu it goes fully to sleep (no fan/other noise). But when it goes to sleep on its own, I can still hear the machine churning away. Any ideas? My roomate has a newer Mac Pro that doesn't do this.

When i insert a dvd it says not supported disc. I copy the movies on my pc and when i open them again it says : The document could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.You may need to install additional software to open this type of file. i have other programs such as DVD player but it still doesn't open.

He said that he made a second partition for Windows; however, the drive showed only one partition formatted with NTFS. I tried reinstalling mac os using the disk that came with the laptop. When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.

I use to have a MacBook Pro (17" if that matters) with OSX 10.5 on it. Back in August '08 I bought a iMac (24") because I had to give the MacBook Back. When I set up the iMac I did the install that allows you to transfer your settings and files to your new computer before I erased everything on the MacBook.Some how I lost a bunch of Pictures I took and had on the MacBook. I just can't find them... i didn't have iPhoto on the MacBook but do on the iMac.
I thought I had lost the photos until one day I pointed the screen saver to my photo folder. Now I can see my photos in the screen saver slide show... but can not see them in iPhoto or in the Photo Folder.I have hope that they are somewhere on my computer but where and how can I get them into iPhoto?

Hello. I am looking to sell my old iBook (for parts) but first want to wipe it clean. Unfortunately, part of the reason I want to get rid of it is because the cd player doesn't work anymore. Therefore, I am unable to 'c' boot from the original OS X disk and erase the hard drive. Is there another way to wipe all personal info from my computer, leaving only the operating system?

I had WD send me a new drive, but now I do not know how to transfer the info from the old drive. Its not a dead drive- its obviously turned on and connected, but I can't mount it to my desktop. I am running a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E drive. Recently I have been trying to burn some video_ts files ripped with MacTheRipper on to 8x Memorex DL DVD +R. I think the problem here is that my drive is only built to handle 4x speeds. I have tried decreasing the speeds in Toast this however has no effect and I still receive a drive error. I have also tried to transform the video_ts folder into multiple different types of disc images and burn them to the DL DVD from the disk utility function. The error I get from here is also a drive error
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using a 20" white intel iMac and cannot manage to remove a linux boot disc from the optical drive.At first, the only way that i managed to boot to the linux disc in the first place was from the Startup Disk menu in OSX. I could not even get to the Startup Manager ('opt' at boot) or boot straight to the disc ('C').Now i'm in a position where no matter what i do, the system boots to the linux disc. I cannot even force the startup into OSX to try to eject the disc from there. I've tried holding all of these keys/combinations at startup
View 3 Replies View Relatedhave in the past few weeks uprgraded from tiger to leopard.Everything has been ok but i think i might have deleted some vital part of Quicktime player when i tried to clean up.I only realised this when i decided to get Quicktime player pro which i have paid for and have the key..I have tried to download quicktime from apple support website and just about any other website for that matter but zero.zilch.Installer takes me through the process but i get no player.
I have tried to remove all components of quicktime but to no avail.the download intalls but goes nowhere.Have tried to maybe 'jumpstart' it by double clicking quicktime time movies but there is just nothing going on.

I've got a 2006 mac mini. I've just moved house and am trying to get it to see the local network. My ancient ibook can see the network but my mac mini can't. The network doesn't come up at all whereas I can see 5-6 with the ibook. Does the 802.11a/b/g have something to do with it? I'm really stuck

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just added a 1 Terabyte drive for both backup and regular file storage. I partioned the drive so I would have a volume purely for backup. Backing up to the drive was taking forever, i searched and found index is the problem. I also found a couple ways to stop indexing. I utilized the touch function, but the .metadata_never_index doesn't seem to take at all. I have since utilized the sudo mdutil function for just the backup volume and this works. However..... Will this permanently leave indexing off on this volume? The drive backs up my laptop so it's disconnected frequently. Also does anyone have a guess to why the never index function didn't work? The syntax looked to be perfect.
touch /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup/.metadata_never_index
Whenever i ran the ls function
ls -a /Volumes/Obsidianice Backup
to check it it returned
No such file or directory
My iMac in my sig is what's giving me the issue. I was updating to 10.6.1 and I got a folder with a question mark symbol on reboot. So I tried reinstalling sl and nothing happens. Put the disc in and nothing happens. Is there a way to get the disc out at all? I tried the eject button on the keyboard.

In my current iMac I have all my applications in the applications folder, I think that is ok. But for example, for my Photoshop and Flash projects I have made a folder in the Macintosh HD with my name and inside that folder I have many other folders. How should I organize my work? Should I put them in the documents folder or what?
Has anybody got photo booth on their new imacs? I just got a new imac and it didn't come with photo booth. I don't know if they aren't putting on macs anymore, or it didn't come with mine.

I install XP with SP3 and after I install the SL disk nothing gets recognized ethernet chipset display sound nothing works after the restart.
Even if someone could point me to the ethernet driver that would be a start since I could just run Windows Update and maybe that would find the rest of the crap.
