OS X :: Start Up From Install Disc - Run Disc Utilities From Earlier Version
Jun 1, 2010I have recently tried to run Onyx which has identified a problem which requires me to run disc utilities from the start up disc. The Snow leopard disc I have only appears to offer Install option.
Q1 Have I missed something?
Q2 Otherwise should I try to run Disc Utilities from an earlier version of OSX

Apr 4, 2009My G-4 startup disc is full and now the computer won't start up. I am told to put a startup disc in the drive and restart from it, but I cannot get the disc drive to open. I have tried everything, including copying over to external hard drive. I read that if you hold the mouse button down, the disc drive will open, but this hasn't worked.

Jan 28, 2006I have an iBook G4 933 and recently inserted a DVD that I was going to put on my ipod. It opened DVD but I quit cuz I was going to Handbrake it later. I got sidetracked and never did anything with the movie. I eventually shut down my computer and noticed the next day there was a disc in my computer but not on the desktop. I continousley clicked eject with nothing happening. I restarted my computer a few times trying holding "c" or ejct with no success so does anyone know how I can get the disc out.

All of a sudden this morning my Mac Pro hard drive filled up with data...completely. I had a Finder window open and watched as the available space went form 90gb+ to ZERO. About this Mac shows over 100gb of "Other" data and ran Space Gremlin and it shows 207gb of "Restricted" data.

May 11, 2009I have an ibook G3 dual usb which was running Tiger but after an update to 10.4.11 I think it is, was running very slowly and the browser (i tried safari, camino and firefox) was constantly crashing. I have a back-up copy of retail Tiger on DVD as my original disc is scratched and no longer reads.I erased the hdd in hope of a clean install, but when I tried to boot from the dvd it just showed up with the flashing ? I know the disc will boot as it works in my G4 powerbook.

Sep 6, 2009Whenever I start up my mac book pro with my LaCie 1TB ext HD attached via FW800 it tries to boot from the LaCie instead of the internal HD. Obviously there is no OS on my ext HD since it's a movie back up so I just get the flashing folder icon.

So the question is how can I format new internal hard drive in the computer, which is going to be used as a start up disc the same time? Is that can be done? Or do I have to mount it as a external one and format it that way (that will required me to buy ATA connector which I try to avoid.?

Apr 29, 2012So I accidentally saved the wrong files to my start up disc. It appears that mac is seeking direction and isn't getting it. All I get is the white screen with the spinning ball. Things I've tried already, 1. (Shift Key) Booting in Safe-Mode. result is: Mac starts to enter safe mode, the little power meter starts to build on the screen, after about 20 seconds the meter stops and the fan speed increases until it gets pretty loud. Eventually the fan speed mellows out, but it never actually boots up. 2. (Option key) This gives me a choice of two drives to choose from, MAC HD & Mac Recovery. I've tried clicking on both drives multiple times by themselves with no luck. I've tried clicking on them seperately and then went right into safe mode with no luck. 3. I've even tried downloading a recovery file from apple and put it on a disc. result: It reads the disc and the goes back to that wonderful white screen and spinning ball.

When I turn it on I hear the chimes, and the apple logo and the rotating "loading" symbol show up but that's all. It just stays on that loading screen forever. Jun 2, 2014I´m trying to discover (with AppleCare support) why my new Air has virtually NO space left on the Start Up Disc...EVER. The OTHER files have always been huge and we´ve trashed everything imaginable. The AppleCare rep suggests that I consider wiping my hard drive clean and starting over. I've done that with my Pro and other computers and will not go there unless absolutely necessary. Today my OTHER appeared for a few hours to be the ONLY kind of files on my SU Disk and indicated I had only 4 MB of space left! Right now, it´s reading that I have all categories of files represented again, but OTHER is still over 41 GB big. Days ago, I took off ALL my docs, movies, photos and am still in constant red alert. That´s why I wonder about DropBox. Some out there on the net say it DOES take up space and others say NO.
