Hardware :: Connecting IMac To A Second Display - What Cables
Jan 9, 2009
I bought a second screen a few days ago, the 23" LG M2394D. I have got it connected to my 24" Aluminium iMac. The resolution of the monitor is 1920x1080 and the iMac is 1920x1200. System preferences lets me assign the different resolutions on the different screens, but the quality on the second screen at 1920x1200 is very dodgy. If i put it to 1650x1050 it looks better, but not as good as the apple display. I have also noticed that the picture is 'too big for the screen', i.e. there is some of the picture outside of the screen area that i cant see. I have the screen connected via the Apple MiniDVI to dvi connector and then a DVi to HDMI cable into the screen. Is it the HDMI that is causing some of the problems? would a straight DVI cable work better? Here is the screen: [URL]
Okay i have a ten year old Sony Trinitron TV. I am trying to connect my Macbook witch has a mini Dvi port to my TV that only has the S-video and RCA inputs. I have the DVi to VGA adapter and a VGA to S-video/RCA adapter. when i plug everything in i get nothing on the tv and my computer does not seem to detect the Tv What do i do? i have been looking and cant seem to find a answer.
I have my music with iTunes installed on a PC desktop that is cabled (cat5) to a router. Can I cable the AirPort via Cat5 to the same router and use that configuration to push music from iTunes to the Stereo receiver? All the configurations I see in the AirPort documentation show the input to it being wireless.
I ordered a VGA cable and a minidisplayport to VGA adapter from ebay, and my lcd keeps saying no signal when I plug in all the cables. I am at a loss as to how to get this to work.
Could you please check if I have all the cables necessary to hook up my Macbook Pro 17" to this Vizio monitor? I got the mini display port to HDMI converter, and an HDMI cable. Is there anything else I need or do you have recommendations for a different brand? I am buying a Vizio 25.5" monitor: [URL]. Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter: [URL]. I'm trying to using my iMac wireless keyboad for my macbook pro while my iMac is in external display mode but I can't get the keyboad to connect. I've tried disconnecting the wireless keyboard from my iMac but it won't go into target display mode without the keyboad. Can I used my iMac wireless keyboard with my Macbook pro while my iMac is being used as an external display?

I have the mini display port plugged in and a vga cable from the imac to my external monitor. I should just be able to turn the monitor on and it work but the imac doesn't detect it and it just comes up as a black screen.
As I understand it the MDP from the 5770/5870's have audio support. So does the cable from the new 27" LED display. Do MDP extension cables that can also carry the audio exist (e.g., is Atlona AT13032-2 such a cable)?
Is this mini displayport male to female cable and this USB 2.0 A Male to A Female extension cable sufficient to extend the connection on the 27" cinema display?
I'm not sure if the single "combo" cable coming out of the back of my 30" cinema display can be removed or not. I'm only willing to pull so hard on it to find out I'm boxing it up for travel to another state for a trip and it would be easier to manhandle it into & out of the box without the cable attached.
I'm going to get a Mac Pro in the new year and a Cinema Display to go with it. Do the 27" Cinema Display's use audio output from the USB port of the Mac Pro or do they use the new 1.1a Mini Displayport standard to pass from the Pro to the Cinema Display?I will need extension cables to get from the Mac Pro under my desk to the Cinema Display. If they use USB for the audio thats no problem, but all the Mini Displayport extension cables I can find online are only 1.1 compliant and state that they can't pass through audio.
Can anyone suggest what should I do with Mac Mini 1,83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and my two new Dell monitors?I tried them using their standard VGI cables connected to a VGI port on a Mac Mini - both are dead. Not a single flicker.
My Mac bought from a trusted friend and acts as a practically new machine - but not with my monitors.
P.S. I went through several Mac-related forums and there's abundance of issues with "alien" monitors.
I'd like to confirm that the two links below are the proper cables for installing a SSD in the new iMacs. Symbology confirmed for the power cable for me already, can anyone else who has installed an SSD confirm the other? If not, can you post a link from Amazon of the correct one? Basically need to know if there is a method of accessing the 360's HDD from an iMac (3.06GHz model) without using XSATA or xsata cables as, you know, there isn't a way to connect xsata cables to the iMac, as far as I know anyway.
I have a Panasonic Viera (2006) digital TV. It has every possible port on the back (and even ports on one side.)The TV is connected to a digital TV tuner/hard disk recorder unit. The tuner also has a ton of ports. What do I need to do in order to send video from the TV to the Mac and record it on the Mac?(Either live TV or video playback from the hard disk recorder.)With my old analog TV, I used the Interview XLR8 USB video capture device with the Interview application or BTV application. (I think even Quicktime could record from the XLR too.)Seems digital TV doesn't work with the XLR8. Is that right? I tried the XLR8 with various combinations of inputs/outputs but can't seem to get any video to appear on the Mac.
I see that HDMI is one way out from Mac out and view on the TV.I also have a VCR and DVD player connected to the TV via a switcher box. With the variety of digital and analog outputs from these devices, seems I should be able to get video from the TV into the Mac.

I've just ordered an i5 Mac Mini and while it's destined to be used as a media-centre/ streamer connected to my TV via HDMI, initially I want to hook it up to the display on my 2011 iMac. Can one of you clever bods point me in the direction of what cable I need, and also what do I need to do to the iMac to make it behave as just a monitor? Is it just a matter of plugging in the cables and off I go?
I seem to have trouble connecting my mpb with certain hdtv's - sony, toshiba. the screen resolution seems to always be bigger than the actual tv size, so the ends are cut off, such as menubar and dock can't be seen. i can't change the settings on my tv, and the display settings on the mbp are limited. is there any app which can adjust the screen size manually? such as a zoom out tool?
I just bought an LG 32" LCD TV (model 32LB9DB). It has 3 HDMI connections on the back, so, I bought a DVI-HDMI cable and connected that to my PowerMac's DVI port (PowerPC G4, 1.75 GB Ram, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card) and then to the TV's HDMI port. I can see my desktop and everything, but, the image quality is very poor no matter what resolution I choose. It looks like the digital signal is being converted to an analog signal before being displayed, so, text is blurry and the overall image looks very poor, not at all like a computer monitor. It looks like a computer image displayed on an analog TV.
I thought that if the TV had digital video input, I would get a 1:1 pixel resolution when attached to my computer, but, I guess not. Am I doing something wrong with the setup? I've already looked at all the TV's settings, and tried lots of different ones, but, the image quality doesn't improve. Here's the detail about my Display:
I've been searching around for some time to try and figure out how to hook up my 360 (and it's HDMI output) to my mac pro (quad, 7Gb ram) and 30" cinema display. Apple lists this on their site: [URL] but it's designed as a video capture card, so I'm not sure if it's appropriate for using simply to play the 360 on. Are there any other pci express cards or units which will allow me to take the output from the 360, input it through my Mac Pro and display it on my cinema display without lag, wonky setups, or hijacking anything?
I know this has been asked a hundred times; can you hook up your 360 to cinema display but all the threads are from years ago and people keep saying there will be converters and such soon. Mac Pro, 30" ACD, Apple LED 24" display, and 360 and I have a uMBP.
I am using a 23" cinema display as my main screen connected to my mac book pro. It is working fine but I was wondering if I could remove the usb connection leaving only the DVI connection and the Firewire connection. (So I have one more usb port to plug stuff) I know for an IPod both were provided in case you don't have a firewire in your laptop when only 1 is needed.
I own an Apple 27" Core i7 iMac. I just bought a Dell 3008WFP (30" LCD Display) [URL]. It has full size display port, hdmi, vga and dvi. As you know though it's a 30" so it needs "dual-link" DVI from whatever is driving pixels to it. So the iMac, to my knowledge only has Mini Display Port, right? How do I get the iMac to push the 30" at full resolution?
I have an older 23" Mac HD Cinema Display monitor with an ADC connector. I just purchased a 15" MacBook Pro and want to use the 23" display. The Apple Store where I purchased the notebook sold me a DVI to MiniDisplay. But I was told I would need to buy an ADC DVI adapter that Apple no longer carries. EBay has many Model A1006 DVI ADC adapters for sale. It looked like it has the plug configuration I need to mate the two adapters.
Basically, I need a Female ADC plug that connects to the Cinema Display and a Male DVI to connect to the DVI to MiniDisplay adapter I have now. I called Apple Support and was told "it should work" but they won't guarantee it will since they don't support either the monitor or the A1006 connector. Can anyone who has successfully done what I'm trying to do please let me know? Will the Model A1006 DVI adapter work with the DVI MiniDisplay adapter?
I got an 1.33 Ghz G4 iBook logic board, given to me as a working part. However, nothing else that goes along. I do have all the basic cabling such as speaker and power button, flex cables and such. Also got myself a new external AC power adapter. Now, I do not intend to use this as a laptop, thus, I will not be looking for a battery, just AC use. However, there's a big problem, I've no screen. I know there's this software hack that allows to connect an external display, in order to have a "mirroring" desktop.
I suppose that'd be achievable if I had the original screen to actually do the hack, but I don't have it. So, is there a way that I can just directly connect an external display and completely forget about the internal one? One more thing, suppose I can't do what I have in mind, if I actually found and borrowed an internal display, would I be alright if after the hack I give the internal display back to it's owner and continue with the external?
Is it possible to connect my 360 to the mac via hdmi display port? I have hdmi to display port already and I have a new macbook pro so it does support audio, Basically I want to play with the screen,. Does mac support input through the display port?
I have been trying to set-up an external LCD tv to my 13in MacBook Pro (mid-2010). I am connecting it through a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter. But on the the 32" Dynex LCD the top menu bar and a lil bit on the bottom and sides are not showing and I cant figure out how to adjust the screen. The resolution is 720p.
I just bought a 23" ACD and I'm having trouble getting it to work with my 17" Powerbook. I checked it in the store before buying and it worked fine, but at home it's not responding. The display is recognised in Preferences and is giving me a choice of resolutions, the light is on, but I can't get the screen to show anything. I've tried adjusting the brightness to bring up an image to no avail, turning mirroring on, and closing the lid on the Powerbook then waking it again but nothing gives me an image on the 23".
My Powerbook is a 1GHz 17" with a GeForce4 MX 64 MB.
