Hardware :: AirPort Utility - Naming A MAC Address?
Feb 12, 2009
I'm trying to keep track of wireless clients joining my network. The AirPort Utility "Logs and Statistics" button (under Advanced) allows me to see what DHCP leases are out and a list of wireless clients. But it's very annoying reading a long string of Hex to know which device it is!
Is there some way to assign a name or label to each MAC address within the Airport Utility? And Yes, I could use pen & paper, but what's the fun in that?

This might seem an odd question but I had to replace my last Airport Extreme base station as it was faulty....I've now got the newer "Dual Band Extreme Base Station". I want to avoid any conflicts with my old settings for my wireless network with my MBP. Should I uninstall the last version of Airport Utility? Is there anything else anyone would recommend before i install or connect the new hardware/software?

When I am on my wireless network at home, I cannot print to my printer (via AirPort). When I go to the router and connect with ethernet cable, the AirPort magically detects itself in seconds.I have Windows 7 computers running bonjour and they can print just fine using AirPort.I was able to print fine wirelessly to the AirPort but today it's not working.

The latest upgrade of AIrport Utility doesn't support my Airport extreme, but the old version 5.6.1 says it doesn't work in Lion. How was I managing my Airport before th 6 update? What do I do now? Will I have to get a new Airport?
I have DSL service. I have an iPod Touch and an iPad 1 that I'm trying to connect. I just upgraded both iDevices to iOS5. I've been having trouble keeping an internet connection live for them, but now I can't even get the wi-fi to connect.

After configuring wireless security on my Airport Extreme base station, the Airport Express I use to stream iTunes music to my whole-house stereo system has disappeared. Airport Utility can't see it. Yes, I checked connections. All I get is a blinking yellow light on the Express. The base station works as its supposed to.

AirPort Express doesn't show up in AirPort Utility 6.0. I haven't updated the AirPort utility on my laptop, and can find it there. 6.0 doesn't even has a scan button... I've done a hard reset of the AirPort Express, still isn't showing up.

I bought the new airport extreme to extend the wifi range in my household and hoped to share a hdd. Upon my experience and reading the forums, the sharing hdd is not as easy as I thought. But that is not my issue at the moment.
My issue is with extending the network. A couple weeks of ago, I did the setup to connect the two airport extremes together (older round AE & new box AE) using aiport utility. It seemed to have work because the signal was stronger in a part of the house that usually had 0 to 1 bar.
But shortly after, the signal showed itself as inconsistent. The signal strenght is jumpy from 0 to full bars. And right now, I am sitting in a part of the house that used to have 0 bars and now, I get full bars. And yet my mbp cannot see the newer, closer in distance AE.

I've repeatedly get: kernel: com.apple.message.domain: [URL].. I don't know for a fact what it means or what it's for but, after some research, the general consensus has made it quite clear that I need to upgrade Airport Utility to v7.5.2. The problem is that I can't seem to find it. This upgrade, apparently, was available well before Lion came out.
Currently, I has v6.0. If there is a known issue with Airport that promted newer versions to be released, then why can I not update to the latest version available?  a direct reply would be nice. Simply send me a message though Apple Support, if possible, or basic.woodworks@gmail.com, or simply reply on this forum and , I hope, I should get a notification.

I love being in an all Apple environment, and typically works great and is intuitive. I do not miss Netgear or Linksys web setup pages and menus, but sometimes, like right now, I feel like either I'm missing something, or I need more control.
I'm using a (single radio) gigE Airport Extreme and I want to find the IP of a IP camera I'm trying to use (Trendnet TV-IP110). I realized that I can't see a list of the devices and their IPs (or even MAC Addresses) and also that I don't know how to assign static IPs (we presently have 4 laptops that are opened and closed all the time and they swap IPs pretty freely).
I've read here on MR some that static IPs are set for Macs in system preferences -> network but how do I do that for less intelligent devices? I guess I can set the IPs for all the household Macs one by one and then go through guessing to try to ping the camera.
Most of the time the camera's internet light blinks, but it went solid once, then blinked again some time later. I'm guessing it got it's own IP and went solid, then someone started using their laptop again and it lost it, but I'm not certain.

In AirPort Utility I have just noticed (possibly since doing the OS X update to 10.7.3, early March 2012) that there is no longer a button to 'Disconnect All Users" from a Time Capsule disk. I used to:Open Airport UtilityClick Manual SetupClick the Disks iconClick the button that says Disconnect All Users However, the AirPort Utility interface is now different. Anyone know how to disconnect all users from a Time Capsule?

I've just taken receipt of a Linksys NSLU2 "Slug". It's essentially a small diskless NAS that allows you to plug in and share USB hard drives over the network. It passes its own POST, and is connected via a fully-functional Cat6 ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n (hereafter simply, "AEBS") running firmware 7.6.1. In a nutshell: I can't make the Linksys NSLU2 (hereafter known as simply, "the slug") available over the network.Â
The problem appears to be this: the slug requires that the LAN use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. This is its default setting and, if it can be changed, I have to get it connected to the network first. The AEBS currently reports a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0. So far as I have been informed, it is this subnet mask mismatch between the slug and the AEBS that is preventing connectivity.I'm currently using Airport Utility 5, simply because I'm more accustomed to its settings. If I launch it, authenticate into Manual Setup, and navigate to Internet>TCP/IP, it displays the following information:Â
Actual problem:If I edit the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0, and click UPDATE, I get the following error message:The router address you have entered is not compatible with your WAN IP address
It then lets me change the Router Address before continuing. However, neither I nor my friend (whom I do believe knows more than a fair bit about networking) have any idea what this Router Address is. It is in no way similar to the router's Private IP Address assigned using DHCP ranges. It is a Public IP Address, and shares the first two octets with my IP Address. Because neither I nor my friend know what this represents, or what it is for, we're reluctant to mess with it. But until we "mess" with it, we can't change the subnet mask on the AEBS, and thus I can't access the slug!

I'm just curious to see what everyone is planning on naming their MacBooks once they arrive and get set up. I know there are a lot of people that like to have certain naming conventions for all of their computers (names of greek gods, astronomy-related names, etc). I'm still trying to decide what I'll name mine. I want more than just something simple like "MBP" or "MacBook" something that's an actual name with personality and strength.

Software Update ran yesterday and I installed the AirPort Utility update (version 5.5.2), and now my MBP no longer connects to my home network when the SSID broadcast is disabled. When I enable the broadcast the network shows up in the list of available networks and I can connect to it, then I can disable it again and the MBP stays connected. But if it's disabled to begin with it won't connect.
I never had this problem before the update, and no other devices on the network are having any issues. Has anyone else had this problem yet, or know of a fix?
Late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro running 10.6.5, all software is up-to-date except for the latest update to iTunes.

So, basically, ever since Lion, my external harddrive has had trouble being found while using the USB slot in the Airport Extreme. Anyway, so the HDD can be seen in the Airport Utility under Disks but I actually cannot access it through Finder. I have ticked the boxes to show External Harddrives in Finder and all that, so I am pretty connfused. All I use it for is watching movies off and TV shwos so I can save space on my MacBook Pro. So yeah, no Time Machine stuff which I usally see about this topic Â

I have been using a time capsule for about 2 years. I use it as an external wireless hard disk as well as a router for extending my wi-fi network (connection via ethernet). Â
For the last couple of days, Airport Utility has been showing two time capsules connected to it. One is "HVS Airport Time Capsule" and the other is "Yogender's Time Capsule". The second one does not belong to me. I have no clue who's time capsule this is. A screenshot is also attached here (one on the right does not belong to me).Â
Does it mean someone is hacking into my wi-fi and using that via their time capsule? I've changed the wi-fi password (for my time capsule's network and the original network) several times, but it still shows up.
This unknown time capsule also shows up in the finder under "Shared". Â

Development of Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.5 Update appears to be winding down, with only a couple of new fixes making their way into recent builds, including one aimed at wireless issues.
This past week saw two new pre-release distributions of the 320MB Leopard update fall into developers' hands. The first arrived mid week as Mac OS X 10.5.5 build 9F25, but contained no noticeable changes from the build the preceded it.
More recently, developers were treated to build 9F29. That build tacked on a pair of fixes, one of which tackles an issue between Macs and previously joined AirPort networks, people familiar with the software say. The second fix was related to a graphics framework.
Seemingly at the tail end of its development cycle, Mac OS X 10.5.5 is reportedly hindered by a single known bug that prevents emails from being searched properly in Apple's Mail application.
The fifth maintenance and security update for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard now stands to deliver 125 bug fixes when it's released later this month.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

Well the problem started when we got a new Time Capsule (2 TB) and replaced and AEBS. At the moment we have 4 macs using the TC. Three wireless and one connected with ethernet cable. If I close the lid on my Macbook Air and open it after a few minutes, it wont connect to the internet. I get a message saying: "Airport has the self-assigned IP address (and the IP #) and will not be able to connect to the internet" I try to use the network diagnostics, and it looks like the network settings is wrong (amber light) and the internet and server is failed.
I then select the network I want to use, and then it suddenly works again. Also three of the macs are using the TC for back ups. Usually the back up gets delayed, and wont start even if I ask it to back up now. It starts to the volume ready, then it says that the disk isn't available. Is there something I cant do or is the TC faulty? My mum and dad arent too good with macs, so if they cant connect to the internet they usually just reboot and it works. I have reset the TC and created the network again, but its still the same issue.

I have a Time Capsule. I'm connected to it for internet no problems. I can connect to it's harddrive no problems. Time Machine connects and writes and disconnects like it should, no problems.
But I need to configure the Time Capsule to change the wireless security settings.
But when I opened up the AirPort Utility, it gives me the "AirPort Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices" crap, and the only thing I can do is click the "Rescan" button, with no avail.
The Time Capsule is literally only two feet away from my MacBook Pro, so signal cannot be an issue here.

I bought a new 2TB Time Capsule, and had problems completing the initial backup. I finally sourced the problem to files that were buried deep in a stack of folders, which seemed to make the file name/path too long. Anyway before I realized that I tried to reformat the Time Machine, and this seemed to work ok. However Airport Utility is now reporting the Time Capsule Disk Size as being 1.8TB, rather than 2TB.
I think before I reformatted the disk it showed as being 2TB in this menu, but I cannot be sure. I am worried that I have somehow formatted it wrong and lost some data space? If I go into Disk Utility, it does say there that the Data partition is 2TB, so it seems strange that Airport Utility shows it at 1.8TB. Can someone else who has the 2TB Time Capsule let me know whether in Airport Utility it shows as being 2TB or 1.8TB?
