OS X Yosemite :: Airport Utility Won't Load Time Capsule?

Dec 10, 2014

I needed to check on my network.  When I opened Airport Utility, the only thing that loads is the internet icon, showing green.  Neither my TC, or an older airport extreme on my network, are identified.  Clicking on the drop down shows "no new wifi or airport devices found" .

MacBook Air :: Unknown Time Capsule Showing Up On Airport Utility

Sep 10, 2014

I have been using a time capsule for about 2 years. I use it as an external wireless hard disk as well as a router for extending my wi-fi network (connection via ethernet).

For the last couple of days, Airport Utility has been showing two time capsules connected to it. One is "HVS Airport Time Capsule" and the other is "Yogender's Time Capsule". The second one does not belong to me. I have no clue who's time capsule this is. A screenshot is also attached here (one on the right does not belong to me).

Does it mean someone is hacking into my wi-fi and using that via their time capsule? I've changed the wi-fi password (for my time capsule's network and the original network) several times, but it still shows up.

This unknown time capsule also shows up in the finder under "Shared".

Hardware :: Time Capsule - Reported Disk Size In AirPort Utility

Feb 22, 2010

I bought a new 2TB Time Capsule, and had problems completing the initial backup. I finally sourced the problem to files that were buried deep in a stack of folders, which seemed to make the file name/path too long. Anyway before I realized that I tried to reformat the Time Machine, and this seemed to work ok. However Airport Utility is now reporting the Time Capsule Disk Size as being 1.8TB, rather than 2TB.

I think before I reformatted the disk it showed as being 2TB in this menu, but I cannot be sure. I am worried that I have somehow formatted it wrong and lost some data space? If I go into Disk Utility, it does say there that the Data partition is 2TB, so it seems strange that Airport Utility shows it at 1.8TB. Can someone else who has the 2TB Time Capsule let me know whether in Airport Utility it shows as being 2TB or 1.8TB?

Hardware :: 24" Imac - Using Time Capsule - Not Appearing On Airport Utility

Jul 31, 2010

I've got a 24" imac which i've had for a couple years now but i just recently purchased a new 15" macbook pro as i was needing a laptop for going offshore. I also bought the 1tb time capsule. I had a real problem setting it up as the time capsule was not appearing on the airport utility, but after a while of messing around, i think i got it working. I have a bt homehub (wireless router) which has an ethernet cable going into the time capsule (wan port). I can now access the time capsule through the imac, macbook and my dads windows laptop. So i had a heap of movies that i put onto the time capsule and they worked fine. But now for some reason when i go to open a movie, it takes forever to load up and when it finally does its starts to buffer etc. So can anyone give advice on how to sort this? Because before the movies just opened instantly and played fine.

One other thing i wish to do is to access my time capusle from my macbook when im offshore. I've heard this is possible to do it from "back to mac" via mobileme which i have. I tried to set this up but when i registered my mobile me details to the time capsule it starting restarting it which i presume was to update the details. But it failed and then the time capsule didn't appear on any of the computers again. After eventually getting it back by restarting etc i think from then on was when the movies started playing up on it. But i have not tried to do the back to mac again incase it does the same thing! Its really driving me mad, i have been tempted just to take it back and get a normal HD but i'd rather not! As i thought by having the time capsule it would save me taking a HD with my macbook when im offshore.

MacBook :: Extending Airport Extreme From Airport Time Capsule

Sep 11, 2014

Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router.

I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty.  I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error.  Try again."  Well, tried again and still no luck.

Recently when booting Yosemite on my MacPro early 2009 I get a message "could not load time machine prepare" but I am able to open it. But when I try to connect to my Time Capsule I get a message, "there is a problem connecting to time capsule". My iMac and Macbook pro both connect to the same time capsule with no problem. It seems the time machine prefpane on the MacPro has been corrupted. What to do?

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule/Airport Extreme With Verizon FIOS?

Nov 10, 2009

I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Backing Up MBP To Time Capsule - Disk Utility Stop Verifying HD

Mar 9, 2012

I've been having trouble backing up my MacBook Pro to my Time Capsule (hasn't backed up in months) so I ran Disk Utility and it gave the following error: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Hard Disk". This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk. So, if I do that, will I end up losing whatever is on my hard disk? And how do I start up the computer using the OS X disk? Just put it in and restart?

OS X :: AirPort Showing Different Time Capsule Disk Capacity

Sep 8, 2010

I just secure erased my Time Capsule disk through AirPort Utility to set it up with my new iMac. After erasing the 1TB disk, AirPort said that the disk capacity is only 931GB even though the Time Machine preferences displayed 998GB available prior to me initiating the first backup. Does anyone know why this discrepancy exists? It should be noted that the previous backup on the Time Capsule disk from my old Mac took up about 68GB so is AirPort Utility just struggling to show the new capacity after the secure erase?

Hardware :: Can A Time Capsule Be Wired To An Airport Express

May 29, 2009

So here's how it is set up at home: my parents have an AirPort Extreme Base Station by our upstairs computers, which is connected to a modem and we use that to get our wi-fi throughout the house. I want to buy an AirPort Express to use to stream music in my room. But I also have a Time Capsule, which I need so I can back up my Macbook. I know that an AirPort Express can be used to extend an existing network. So would it be possible to plug in the Express in my room, use it to extend our upstairs network, and then hard-wire the Time Capsule to the Express through the ethernet port and use that to connect the Time Capsule? On paper that seems like it would work, because the Express would be receiving a signal from the base station upstairs, and then sending it to the Time Capsule, giving them both access to the network. But I just want to make sure it would work before I drop $99 on an Express.

Hardware :: Apple Time Capsule Vs. Airport Extreme?

Dec 4, 2009

My NETGEAR WNR854T died and I am looking for a replacement.

I do a lot of online gaming and HD video streaming, and have several wired and wireless devices in the home network. I also have been thinking of getting a shared backup hard drive.

I started looking at the NETGEAR WNDR3700 unit, but there are a lot of people complaining about dropped connections. So, I am now looking for an Apple Airport Extreme.

During my research, I found also the Apple Time Capsule. Is there any advantage to getting the Time Capsule? Or should the Airport Extreme be better by adding any external hard drive to the USB port?

Also, is model number MC340LL/A the correct one for the Apple Airport Extreme?

OS X :: Time Capsule / Airport Extreme External Access?

May 26, 2010

I picked up my first Mac about a 2 weeks ago and over this past weekend I picked up a new Time Capsule. Originally I bought the Time Capsule to wirelessly bridge to my Linksys router running DD-WRT (mega) but apparently the ethernet ports won't work on the Time Capsule or the Airport Extreme when connecting them to another party wireless router. So i have taken out my Linksys and am now only using the Time Capsule. The reason for the Time Capsule is to have backups on it and that for some reason I do have wireless issues with my Linksys that I am not having with the Time Capsule. Such as when I had a iPhone I would lose my wireless signle a lot and have to reboot, same with my iPad and sometimes with my Nexus One. So far none of those issues with the Time Capsule. I'm not missing much from my Linksys but one of the things I miss is being able to open up a browser from any network connection and being able to connect into my router. Is there a way with the Time Capsule / Airport Extreme to be able to access the configuration settings when not on the local network? Such a when I am at work I want to be able to access the configurations page.

Hardware :: Key Software Update For Time Capsule & AirPort Extreme?

Mar 6, 2009

Late Thursday evening, Apple released firmware updates for the 2009 Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme that resolves issues on the new devices. A parallel update also adds Back to My Mac drive sharing support to the prior generation of the wireless base stations.

The updates for both the new and previous Time Capsule and AirPort Base Station (802.11n) are all designated as firmware 7.4.1. The newest revision that had been available to previous models was 7.3.2, and the new 2009 models shipped with 7.4

The updates can be applied using AirPort Utility, typically located in the Applications/Utilities directory on systems running Mac OS X, but only after downloading the AirPort Utility 5.4.1 released this past Tuesday.

What's new in 7.4.1

A support article on Apple's site details the changes delivered by the firmware 7.4.1 update:

For AirPort Extreme (Early 2009) and Time Capsule (Early 2009) that ship with firmware 7.4, the firmware 7.4.1 update:

Resolves an issue in which a client computer may be disconnected when waking from sleepAddresses an issue in which redirecting SMTP port services may disable IP-layer networkingImproves the reliability of Back to My Mac-based disk sharingIncludes recent AirPort security updates

For AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet), AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet), AirPort Express with 802.11n, and original Time Capsule models, the firmware 7.4.1 update:
Enables remote administration and remote access to compatible USB connected drives via Back to My Mac (except on AirPort Express)Improves reliability when backing up to a Time Capsule via Time MachineIncludes recent AirPort security updates

Once applied, the update adds a MobileMe tap in the Advanced section of the AirPort's configuration (pictured below). After entering an account and password, the base station will need to be restarted.

Also included in the update are a trio of security updates outlined here, mostly pertaining to enhancements to the base station's IPv6 stack.

As was noted by AppleInsider in a previous article, the 7.4.1 firmware update adds the ability to access drives attached to 802.11n AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules over MobileMe, but does not deliver the guest networking and simultanious dual-band features of the just-released models because those features require hardware support.

Hardware :: Using Airport Express To Extend Wifi From Time Capsule?

Sep 13, 2010

Sorry if this question has been asked many times before - I tried running numerous searches, but it's been difficult to find a straightforward answer to my predicament.

I have a time capsule and an airport express. I would like to extend the range of my wifi network as my modem (attached to the time capsule) is on the third floor of my home and I'd like to improve the strength of my internet connection to the lower floors. I've tried to set-up airport express (located on the 2nd floor, but initially set-up near my time capsule) and the time capsule with the extend range options, but my airport express doesn't seem to improve the range of the wifi. I tested my internet speed by running the test away from airport express, near airport express and with my laptop connected to airport express via ethernet. In fact, connecting the laptop to airport express seems to produce the slowest download speed and being near airport express does not seem to provide faster download speeds.

Can someone point me to straightforward instructions where I can setup airport express to extend the range of my wifi network that uses time capsule? Also, how will I know that airport express is extending my range? When I view my wireless networks, should I see my airport express as one of the wireless networks that I can connect to?

Hardware :: Way To Switch Off Airport Extreme Or Time Capsule Wifi?

Nov 26, 2010

Is there a way, in the settings, to turn off the Time Capsule's Airport wifi? I've been looking at the "Apple Airport Networks" and the "Designing Airport Networks" manuals and haven't found an On/Off setting similar to the MBP's Airport On/Off. I live in a high-rise, with a lot of wifi networks, and would like to configure the Time Capsule via wired LAN with wifi off, until it is secured with WPA2 encryption, and MAC address filtering. Also, I will probably be using the gigabit LAN connection most of the time, when at my desk.
