Mac Pro :: Crossfire In 2006 Mac Pro?

Sep 5, 2010

I have a 2006 Mac Pro and I'm wondering if CrossFireX is possible on this system. Specifically with two 5770s.

My understanding is that CrossFireX requires two PCIe 2.0 16x slots. However, the 2006 Mac Pro only has PCIe 1.x slots, and with two cards, it's only possible to have its slots running at 8x. Does this prevent CrossFireX from working at all, or is it simply a case of it working fine but running at reduced performance?

Mac Pro :: Replacing 2006 Mac Pro ?

Sep 25, 2010

I currently have an original 2006 Mac Pro (dual 2.66GHz) which has served me well over the past 4+ years but I'm thinking that the time has come to look for a replacement.

Here are the replacement machines I've been looking at along with my thoughts...

2010 MacPro - 2.8GHz Quad
While I like the price point ($2500), I'm not sure how much of a performance boost I will get over my current machine. Also the processor architecture is the previous generation (Nehalem vs Westmere). Is that a legit concern?

2010 MacPro - 3.2GHz Quad
Once again, chip architecture and performance (to a lesser extent due to the higher clock speed) are concerns but $2,900 is doable from a financial standpoint.

2010 MacPro - 3.33GHz Hex
This is the one I really want but $3,700 is out of my price range.

2009 MacPro (Refurbished) - 2.93GHz Quad
This configuration drew some interest when I saw it in the refurbished section of the Apple Online Store mainly due to the $2,500 price tag.

The computer will be mainly used for graphics creation/editing (Photoshop) and web development (Dreamweaver) as well as for web surfing, e-mail, photo and music management and MS Office applications. I also run Parallels because there are a couple of applications that I need to run that are Windows-only.

So my question to the MacRumors' community is which of the above machines would you recommend or should I just stand pat with my 2006 MacPro and wait for the next refresh.

I did consider an iMac but the 21" is a little underpowered IMO and the 27" will not fit on my desk.

Mac Pro :: 2006 Won't Display Anything?

May 26, 2012

My mac pro won't display anything. I've had a look at this [URL] and one of the first things I did was reset the PRAM & NVRAM. The 10.6.8 install is fully updated. The startup chime plays and fans run normally.

I have: re-sat the RAM,cleaned the RAMcleaned the insideremoved all the HDDs except the main oneand even used another Raedon 4850 in place of mine.

It starts up in Target-Disk mode fine, I am using it with my iMac now but it is not the same (iMac is only dual core andhas half the RAM) I've tried several screens; DVI, VGA and HDMI all without luck. It's obviouslt out of warranty and I don't want to take it to a Apple store anyway as I ocassionally build & repair computers myself so am fine with trying anything out.

Things I could do/ haven't done: Remove/ replace the Logic Board battery?test the power I/O?start in Safe Mode?

OS X :: Can't Connect To Exchange Server

Nov 16, 2010

Our company has gotten new email addresses from a new email provider. In Outlook it is fairly easy to set up. Everything is 'found' automatically.

On my Mac however, I have to setup an Exchange account in Mac Mail by hand. The problem is, the account won't connect to the mail server which is found through a internal ip address. When I ping that address through Terminal it works, so that ip address is ok. When I setup the mail account however it says 'The Exchange Server at '172.**.**.**' won't respond'. User and Pass are ok cause I can view my mail through the webmail account.

Why can I Ping that 172 ip address, but Mail won't connect to it? Is there something the IT department should do extra to make it work?

MacBook Pro :: How To Exchange Products

Sep 23, 2009

I bought a macbook pro about 3-4 months ago. I posted before with problems, though it's getting much worse. Initially the "return" key stuck pretty badly. I brought it into the genius bar and they claimed they didn't feel it (it's very very obvious, they clearly just didn't want to deal with it).

Anyways, a month after that the computer began rattling. Ever once in a while it would make a prolonged and negative sound. When I pick it up nowdays it sometimes makes a suspicious sound as though something is moving freely inside.

And finally, another month later and two hours ago, the battery failed. It now only runs when plugged into the adapter, and its status is "service battery" in the little icon thing.

At this point I really feel the computer should be traded out; too much is going wrong for a mere fix (and the genius bar has been very stubborn with me in terms of admitting problems). So, symptoms in mind, do you think I should be able to trade in my mac, and how would I go about doing this?

Applications :: Cannot Exchange Right With Entourage

Jan 10, 2010

I have the Student ed of Mac Office 2008. The only thing I can't do with Entourage is Exchange right? Every time I try to send an attachments. It lets me pick the file(s), no problem here. Then I tell it to send it. Once the mail has been sent, the attachments don't open on the original or the sent copy. If I try to open it though Entourage I get "Entourage Error Unknown". If I save the file and try to open it that way. It will launch the right app to open the file correctly. But the App will tell me this file is corrupted or incomplete. Now it's not allowing my to save the attachments. I get some "Entourage Error Unknown". I get this on both sides with the original post and with the sent file.

OS X :: Using Email Exchange Access?

Jul 22, 2010

I can't take Entourage (2008) any more - the constant garbling of the enormous single database file (and the database "repairs" which always seem to lose data) are driving me crazy.

Our institution is going to upgrade to Exchange 2007 (or perhaps 2010) in a few weeks, and I need to move to a more stable client. I'm running the latest 10.6. Can someone advise me: do I want Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or something else? My criteria are:

1) I need to be able to access Exchange email, Calendar, and Addressbook, but not necessarily with the same application.
2) I have a very large database of emails - 22 Gigs or so, and I need to be able to view and search them all. So,
3) which client will make migration from Entourage easiest?
4) which one is the most stable, so that this huge (and growing database) won't get corrupted? It's insane that one bad action can ruin the whole thing. Surely there are clients that store emails separately so that even if something gets damaged, the whole thing isn't munged.

MacBook :: 2006 Won't Start Up?

May 2, 2012

So I was using my early 2006 MacBook (1.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, tiny amount of RAM) to view a YouTube video, and it froze (gave me rotating rainbow thingy). Since this happens often, I got up to put the computer on the table and do something else. When I picked the computer up, the power cord caught on the table and was pulled off of the computer. Since the battery is 100% dead, the computer shut off abruptly. I've also done this before without trouble. When I go to turn it on, however, now the screen flashes white for a split-second (normal), and I get a gray screen. Eventually, I get a flashing folder with ?. I've tried reseating the hard drive, and pressing down various keys when it starts up, but to no avail. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, but I was wondering if I could fix it for free... I'm not sure what OS it is, but it's OS X Tiger, I think.

OS X :: ICal Exchange Shared Calendar

Mar 26, 2010

One of my customers is experiencing an error with one particular Exchange 2007 shared calendar in iCal. The shared calendar he has access to is in the Delegation tab of the Exchange account as Read Only, which is his correct level of access. The calendar will initially load correctly, but over time it starts to display an error with recurring events similar to this -- "iCal can't save the event "office time - do not disturb" to the exchange server. The account can't be modified. To discard your changes and continue using the version of your calendars that's on the server, click Revert to Server. To save your changes on your computer until the problem is resolved. click Go Offline." After selecting both Go Offline or Revert to Server, it cycles through all the recurring events on an infinite loop. If you select Go Offline, the errors will stop, but taking the account back online to get calendar updates will result in the error immediately returning. Removing and re-adding the account in the delegation tab will refresh the calendar without error for a short period of time, but the errors will eventually pop up again.
