Mac Pro :: What Is Best Graphics Card For 2006 Bootcamp

Aug 10, 2010

I have a 2006 mac pro with an x1900xt, I'm looking to get another card to run in Bootcamp (Win 7 32bit) for games. I was looking at flashing a 4870 but it looks like it's more trouble than it's worth (I see a lot of dual monitor issues, for example, and I require dual monitors).

What card should I get with minimum trouble such that I can use it in Bootcamp/Win7? I'll continue use the x1900xt for OS X. Looking for <$150, something like an ATI 4870 or 5750 (preferably without any additional special cables.

Mac Pro :: Can Boot 2006 With Only A PC 4870 Card

Mar 13, 2009

I have a Mac Pro 2006 edition with an ATI 1900XT video card. This is working just fine, and I can boot into Mac OS X and Windows Vista via Boot Camp.

I just purchased a Sapphire 4870 video card. My plan was to remove the 1900XT and plug in the 4870, and always boot into Vista. I realize that since this card is not a "Mac" card I will not be able to use Mac OS X. I also expected from my reading that I would not be able to hold down the option key at boot time to select my boot drive. I figured if I had a need to get back into OS X, I'll put the 1900XT back in for that.

As long as the Mac is configured to boot Windows, I thought that this setup would work fine. With the 4870 I expected that I would hear the bootup gong and then eventually see Vista start to boot up.

So, with that in mind, I performed the switch last night. I removed the 1900XT and installed the 4870. I had to run an additional power lead from the spare molex connector by the DVD drive to the 4870 since it requires two power connections. The 1900XT only needs one.

I plugged everything in, and turned on the Mac. I heard the startup gong. So far so good.

Then, my screen turns almost completely white (a very light gray) and I see a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. The hard drives begin to seek and it sounds like things are booting... however I never get to the Vista boot selection screen (I actually have two Vista installs on two separate drives, so I always get the boot selection screen to decide which drive to boot from.) I also never hear a Vista startup sound... it's almost as if it is booting into Mac OS X instead of Vista.

At this point I am stumped and I'm hoping somebody here in the forum knows what is going wrong. Does my 4870 not have enough power? Do I have to have a Mac-compatible video card plugged in even if I don't plan on using it? Is what I'm trying to do just impossible?

Mac Pro :: 2006 - Can I Use A Non-Mac Video Card In Windows

Feb 7, 2010

Long time mac user here. While I like OSX Snow Leopard recently I have switched to Windows 7 as I find the experience superior to anything Apple currently offers. I do however how a question about using my 2006 Mac Pro in Windows

My Mac Pro came with a 7300GT which is barely adequate for anything nowadays. I was wondering is it possible to use a passively cooled ATI Radeon 5450 (DX11 that supports all the high definition video codecs) in my Mac Pro alongside 7300GT? I know it wont be possible to use it while in OSX, but can I run both in my system so when I boot into Windows 7 (majority of the time) I can use the 5450 instead?

Mac Pro :: Finding Recommended Video Card For 2006

Oct 27, 2009

So here's the deal, I've currently got a 2006 Mac Pro with an ATI X1900XT video card and a 23" ACD.

I'm looking to add two more displays to my setup (most likely 24" Dells) for a total of 3 monitors and would thus require 2 graphics cards.

So here's my question, would I be able to keep my current X1900 card and add a second card? If so, what card would people recommend?

Mac Pro :: Performance Boost From Video Card In Launch Model, 2006?

Mar 19, 2010

Just wondering what else, if anything else, I can upgrade on my system.I have an original 2006 launch model (2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual Core Xeon, 8GB 667 DDR2 RAM from Crucial, 4 x 1TB Western Digital RE3 7200RPM drives w/ 32MB Cache in a Software RAID)However, I still have the original NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card in here and I've never been super-impressed nor disappointed.Should I replace it? I do mostly graphics work in Photoshop and writing code as a web-developer but I do occasional gaming so I'd see a benefit there.. I'm just wondering if it'd boost performance in the OS. Honestly, the computer runs fine... I would never replace it unless it had an issue. I'm just thinking about the future.

I called my local Apple store and they told me that they could install it for me but they aren't allowed to order the part...? Weird. Also, while I'm asking, I'm interested in upgrading my graphics card. I read somewhere that the ATI Radeon HD 3870 will work. Is there anything else you guys could recommend? Mac Pro :: Graphics Card ?

May 1, 2009

I replaced my macbook pro last week with a MacPro 8 core.

For the last few days the GT120 graphics card was connected to two 24" dell monitors (2407 and 2408).

The 2407 is my main display and was connected via the display port to a display port to DVI-D adaptor and then to the DVI-D port on the screen. The 2408 was connected using the DVI-D on the graphics card straight to the monitor. This setup was great as I couldn't even tell if my mac was on or off because I couldn't hear any off the fans.

The only problem was that when running full screen video (EyeTV/Quicktime), the picture would sometimes stutter. After looking at the apple store website, a new GT120 was 99 for students so I picked one up yesterday.

The original GT120 is in slot 1 and is connected to my 2407 (main display) via DVI-D, the second GT120 is in slot 2 and connect to my 2408 via DVI -D. Now the problem is noise! I can now hear my mac whirring away all night (MacPro in my bedroom).

Any idea what the problem could be? When i run iTunes visualizer, both displays average at about 63fps and there is no stuttering of the picture. One thing I have noticed (using hardware monitor) is that when play itunes visualizer on full screen the GT120 in slot one uses 22% and the GT120 in slot two uses 99%.

Mac Pro :: Which Graphics Card For 1,1 Is Best

Jun 17, 2009

I have two issues with my present X1900: it's not going to be OpenGL compliant come September, and more pressingly on a day to day basis, for some reason Eve Online, the game I'm rather addicted to, doesn't like me using two video cards - a stock GeForce 7300 and the Radeon.

I haven't been able to troubleshoot my way to confirming why I have the issue (and I've posted on Eve online forums - no one else seems to have the issue) but I get really odd graphics glitches when I have more than 2 screens 'detected'. Rather, when I have screens on more than 1 video card. I think it has to do with an ATI/nVidia conflict while running a Mac port of the Linux Port of Eve.

So I was hoping to get the 8800 perhaps, but they're getting pretty hard to find. Any other suggestions? Performance-wise I've been happy with the X1900, don't really *need* to upgrade, but I'd like to maximize OpenGL and solve this confilct issue so I'm not constantly climbing in behind my desk to unplug and replug DVI cables - I now run 3x monitors and a projector.

Price counts for me, I'd like to keep this upgrade as cheap as possible - don't use 'Pro' apps. I'm not afraid to flash a PC card if there's decent instructions around somewhere. This is actually a PC X1900 with a custom fan/heatsink fitted (Xcellero X2 or something? It's been a while).

Mac Pro :: New/Upgrade Graphics Card For Mac Pro?

Dec 10, 2010

So basically, I bought a Mac Pro in mid 2007 with the following specs:

Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
1GB (2 x 512MB)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB SDRAM

Anyways, I have just started using it again and would like to use it to play WoW (probably via BootCamp) but the current graphics card is really insufficient.

So what I'm basically looking for is a graphics card that would run in a mid-07 Mac Pro with the 2x2.66GHZ Dual-Core Intel Xeon's (ram is not an issue, I can upgrade this as well) - that will allow me to play WoW on even good settings.

PowerPC :: New Graphics Card For G5?

Nov 30, 2007

I posted this on the buyers guide forum but got no response. Maybe you guys can help.

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with 5.5 GB ram and an ATI Radeon 9600 pro graphics card.

I have been running Final Cut Studio with no problems. Once I upgraded to FCS 2, it seems to drag with some of the new fetures. Motion 3 seems really slow! So I added 2 more gigs of ram to bring it up to the 5.5.

I am waiting for the new MP like so many of you, but I will keep this computer for off line editing and compressor and for a part time assistant editor to use.

Would it be worth it for me to upgrade the graphics card?

If so what would be a good choice of card for this type of work.

FYI the last computer game I played was Zork, so I don't care about gaming.

Any advice on best graphics card setup for those particular games under bootcamp? I'm not at all worried about on the OS X side of things as I don't really do anything graphic intensive there. I saw the new Nvidia GTX 285 is coming out soon. Any thoughts on that vs the Radeon 4870s? I'm currently running dual Radeon 3870s with crossfire but because I'm on a 1st Gen Mac Pro I can't get everything out of them so I think I may want to upgrade to a new Mac Pro.
