Applications :: Searching Internet Blocking Scheduler?
Feb 1, 2009
does anyone know of good software to turn the internet off on a schedule? i am looking for something like 'time out,' but that actually shuts the internet off so you can work without procrastinating. i want software that will allow me to turn the internet off for, say, an hour, and not allow me to turn it back on no matter what.

Recently I have been having issues loading internet content. When I try to load almost any website, my internet browser acts like it is searching for my wireless router and can't find it. However, when I use my PSP to connect to the internet from the same spot, it works perfectly fine. The PSP usually says there is a 70% connection, which is better than it has ever been. My router and laptop are on the same floor only a room away.
I have other people in my house that share the router: 6 computers; 4 are laptops that are used more often than the 2 desktops, 4 iPod Touches; 2 of which are never used. I had everyone turn off Bluetooth on all devices since none of us use that feature and that didn't help all.
I honestly don't know what the problem is, but if I had to make a guess, it would be all of the things that our devices can connect to with AirPort. There is Motorola, 2WIRE017, 2WIRE160, 2WIRE417, 2WIRE730, MartinWirelessRouter, NorzWireless, NETGEAR, schooly, and stackdaddy. I think all of these wireless connections are disrupting one another, which is what I thought was causing the problem. The only one I ever care to connect to is Motorola, so is there a way to prevent my computer from even recognizing anything else?

Setup is Snow Leopard & Time machine on the latest version. Backups have been working fine for a year then a few days ago I noticed the Time Machine scheduler started creating a complete new sparsefile and ignores the original one its been using just fine until now appending the file name to "Machinename 1.sparsebundle". As soon as I delete it the scheduler simply re-creates. The original sparefile works fine... verified it, can open and restore content from it... just for some reason it TC wont pick it up and incrementally back up to it.

So top sites seems pretty cool but what if you are at work and shouldn't necessarily be surfing and sites start popping up in 'Top sites' for your boss to become aware of? I see no obvious way of blocking them. The 'Safari 4 launched' post is growing so fast it made sense for me to post this separately.

Seems Glimmerblocker isn't working with the beta release of Safari 4. Anyone have any luck blocking ads? Also, I'd love to block flash. The inability to block flash is probably the main reason I could never use Safari full time. The browser looks amazing and is very snappy, but alas.... I need plugin support.

installed what seemed to be the most commonly referred to one -- SafariPlus. It was not the usual easy install -- I had to add a folder in my Library, and move the contents of the download into it. Upon restarting Safari, it would crash immediately -- so I removed it.
I also installed ClickToFlash, and while it worked well, it kind of annoyed me when using, for example, youtube playlists, and i had to click on every single page in order for it to play. I get that it's what it's designed to do, but it wasn't really convenient for me.

Here is the situation. my family has someone staying with them our house who is basically addicted to internet pornography. They will be here for a while as they have hit a rough patch in their life and we are trying to help them out.
We already had a block set up with openDNS to effectively block all web sites through our router (apple time capsule) but that doesn't do anything to block p2p file sharing and our guest has figured this out. I discovered this because they are not too computer literate and all of their downloads from limewire and frostwire ended up showing up in their itunes shared library.

Just out of curiosity, now that the App Store is looking through and matching up your already installed software, what about people who have installed illegal versions or shared their serial numbers on more than one computer? Is it possible that the App Store will look at the serial numbers and block such software? It certainly sounds possible. Big brother warning here?

The other day I noticed an Opera icon on my dock, clicked and not surprisingly, Opera appeared. I have never installed Opera and Im the only one who has ever touched my macbook. I quit out of it, and it disappeared off my dock, which means not only had it installed itself but run all by itself too. So I went straight to my apps folder to find and delete it and it wasn't there. A spotlight search came up with nothing too? How is this even possible with the permission system of OS X? Any ideas on how to find out if/where it is installed?

Just wondering if there's such a thing as a Keynote Viewer for PC's?
I have got iWork '08 and love Keynote far more than PowerPoint but my uni uses Windows PC's so it means I have to use PowerPoint for my lectures.
I know that if you save a Keynote presentation as a quicktime file, that works, but very few of the PC's have iTunes/quicktime installed.

For years, I used Eudora (Mac) because it was fast and fit the way I needed and wanted to work. Overall, I still think it's the best e-mail program but I switched to Mail for some very specific reasons: I needed to be able to specify specific POP ports for specific e-mail accounts, I wanted to use the Mac OS centralized address book (Eudora's interface with Address Book was kludgy), I had apparently reached the limit on folders within Eudora as it would crash when I tried to add a new folder and restoring to previous preferences would allow me to use Eudora didn't fix the problem with adding a folder, and I wanted to see html e-mails (Mail still doesn't create html e-mails well).Overall, I'm OK with Mail (v. 4.2, Mac OS 10.6.2, MacBook Pro late 2006 Core 2 Duo, 3gb RAM). The thing that I miss the most is Eudora's very robust searching capabilities. There may well be something I've missed with Mail as it seems that the kind of searches that I want to do should be possible in Mail. Here are some examples of the kinds of things I want:
1. Search on multiple criteria. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx and "Date" is after xx/xx/xx and "Body" contains xxxxxxxx.
2. Boolean searches. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy.
3. Search within the results of a search. For instance, first find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy, then within those e-mails, find e-mails where "Body" contains zzzzz.
4. Full boolean and/or grep searching (this would go beyond Eudora's capabilities).
Is there a resource, preferably online, for power searching in Mail? If so, where? While doing this kind of searching as native part of Mail would be preferable, I would be satisfied with a plug-in or even a third-party utility that interfaces well with Mail.

Does anyone know how to search a pdf with Preview using multiple terms?
Example: I searched for battle fatigue, and it showed me every result containing battle (including things like battlefield) and every result containing fatigue. I'm need it to find a specific phrase, not every instance of every word.
Putting the phrase in quotes returns nothing, as does using + between words.

I often find myself searching for a piece of text that I wrote myself within a webpage. For example, when writing a long email in gmail, I want to look for a certain word I wrote somewhere in the middle. Firefox dynamically includes all the text that is present on the page (as opposed to just what's in the source of the page) and I'm wondering if there is a way to do that with Safari.

I recently switched 99% to a mac and im having a very hard time to find an alternative software like "PhotoScape" on windows!
I print a list of applications i use on windows and started searching for alternatives!
I find everything i needed except that! I looked in to many many forums (inc here)... tested more than 50 software but no luck at all!
Free or commercial doesnt matter! The only link between me and my PC is photoscape and this is killing me!
A full noisy tower - 100 cables everywhere just for running one app. (winebottler wont run it normally)
What exactly im looking for (for those of you who dont know "PhotoScape")
Is a multi batch editor for pictures with "preset" feature. (not a photo organizer or something like iphoto)
I want to be able to add lets say 10 images, load the xxx partner preset
and.. (auto action for that specific preset)
<example>
- resize them with max width 600px
- place a watermark with the name of the partner to a specific location on the image. text watermark with outline color and basic text tools predifined for each preset
- rename them like "partner-01" - "partner-02" - "partner-03" etc etc
-export them in Jpeg format with quality 80 to a subfolder called "partner-xxx" inside the folder with the originals.

I'm tired of my brother getting terrible grades, not doing anything, and complaining about lagging all the time so how can I go about blocking world of warcraft from our network? I have a time capsule and found out that WoW uses port 3724 but that's all i know... If it can't be done with the network then how would I be able to block it on his computer without him being able to fix it with just a reinstall? (he has a PC)
