Applications :: Spotlight Not Searching Through Entire Laptop?
May 18, 2009Often, when I type a filename in Spotlight, it does not find it, although I am 100% sure the file exists. Is this normal? Can it be corrected?

Oct 29, 2007Spotlight doesn't seem to be searching my library folder. I want it to though, is there any way to make it search the entire drive? Does it do this for other people, is my install bad I have had not problems except this.

Mar 1, 2012I use iTunes a lot in a classroom environment. Usually I play most songs from playlists. But every now and then I need to move to a song quickly that is not in that current playlist. My habit is to enter the new song's title in the search bar, but that doesn't work because if I am currently playing a playlist, the search bar only searches that current play list. Then I have to select the total music library and search from that level.
is there a fast way to search the entire music library for a song while a playlist is currently selected in iTunes?

Dec 14, 2008Is there any Terminal commands that will do this? I use Spotlight all the time - to load documents to loading applications. However, I hate how it makes any DVD's in my drive spin up. I never search DVD's, so turning this off wouldn't be an issue.

Sep 15, 2009Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have an issue with spotlight. When I search for something and I select it, spotlight seems to continue on searching and I have to click the spotlight button again and press ESC to stop it from continuing searching. I want it to stop searching after I've used it, as it spins the hard drive quite fast, which generates noise.

Spotlight continues searching and it will continue to search until I "x-out" of the search field. Is this how spotlight works or can the search be turned off after selected a search result?

Dec 28, 2009Yesterday I wanted to search for a desktop picture I downloaded. Naturally, I just pulled up the spotlight menu and typed in the name of the desktop picture and waited, and waited, and waited. It found the dictionary definition, and two applications but, the jpg was just taking FOREVER to show up. I ended up canceling the search and just finding it on my hard drive because I knew right where it was.
I tried re-indexing my drive, but that didn't solve the problem. However, after trying a few things, I found the culprit! I have a Boot Camp partition for Windows 7 (it's for games, don't judge me). Well, I figured out that since Snow Leopard can't write to my Boot Camp partition, it couldn't index it as well. All I had to do was go into System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy and add my Boot Camp partition to the list. Now my Spotlight is lightening fast again. Sweet!
To summarize: Is Spotlight taking forever to search? Add your Boot Camp partition/drive to System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy

Aug 9, 2010I just switched to Mail from Entourage and am setup to Exchange. I just noticed when I search within Mail or through OSX Spotlight it doesn't appear to search within the Attachment in the emails. Is this how it is designed? If so, do I have any options?

Apr 3, 2012I am having a problem where my mail App is not searching the entire body of the message any more. I installed Lion soon after it was released, and I believe that it has been working up until recently.
If I do a search, it won't search the message body, and gives me no option to search for "Message contains" (just "People" and "Subjects"). If search for subject "foo" and then click on the "Subject" pull down menu, it shows "Subject" and "Entire Message", but "Entire Message" is greyed out.
I've done a lot of web searching and most people with similar problems had problems with Spotlight. If I do a Spotlight search, it does find all of the mail messages correctly. Its just the Mail app that won't let me search.
I haven't tried re-indexing spotlight yet because spotlight seems to be working okay. Note that all of my mail accounts are "POP" accounts with the mail stored locally on my machine.

Apr 15, 2009The other day I noticed an Opera icon on my dock, clicked and not surprisingly, Opera appeared. I have never installed Opera and Im the only one who has ever touched my macbook. I quit out of it, and it disappeared off my dock, which means not only had it installed itself but run all by itself too. So I went straight to my apps folder to find and delete it and it wasn't there. A spotlight search came up with nothing too? How is this even possible with the permission system of OS X? Any ideas on how to find out if/where it is installed?

I have got iWork '08 and love Keynote far more than PowerPoint but my uni uses Windows PC's so it means I have to use PowerPoint for my lectures.
I know that if you save a Keynote presentation as a quicktime file, that works, but very few of the PC's have iTunes/quicktime installed.

Jan 19, 2010For years, I used Eudora (Mac) because it was fast and fit the way I needed and wanted to work. Overall, I still think it's the best e-mail program but I switched to Mail for some very specific reasons: I needed to be able to specify specific POP ports for specific e-mail accounts, I wanted to use the Mac OS centralized address book (Eudora's interface with Address Book was kludgy), I had apparently reached the limit on folders within Eudora as it would crash when I tried to add a new folder and restoring to previous preferences would allow me to use Eudora didn't fix the problem with adding a folder, and I wanted to see html e-mails (Mail still doesn't create html e-mails well).Overall, I'm OK with Mail (v. 4.2, Mac OS 10.6.2, MacBook Pro late 2006 Core 2 Duo, 3gb RAM). The thing that I miss the most is Eudora's very robust searching capabilities. There may well be something I've missed with Mail as it seems that the kind of searches that I want to do should be possible in Mail. Here are some examples of the kinds of things I want:
1. Search on multiple criteria. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx and "Date" is after xx/xx/xx and "Body" contains xxxxxxxx.
2. Boolean searches. For instance, find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy.
3. Search within the results of a search. For instance, first find all e-mails where "From" contains xxxxx or "From" contains yyyyy, then within those e-mails, find e-mails where "Body" contains zzzzz.
4. Full boolean and/or grep searching (this would go beyond Eudora's capabilities).
Is there a resource, preferably online, for power searching in Mail? If so, where? While doing this kind of searching as native part of Mail would be preferable, I would be satisfied with a plug-in or even a third-party utility that interfaces well with Mail.

Oct 4, 2010i used to put iphoto on a network HDD, i'm now switch to usb hdd. i removed all the photo album from iphoto, deleted iphoto library. i just want a clean import of photos. but every time i tried to import i get an error "Connection Failed: the server may not exist or it's unavailable at this time..." i've tried to delete com.apple.iphoto.plist file, opt+cmd+iphoto... but nothing seem to work.

Example: I searched for battle fatigue, and it showed me every result containing battle (including things like battlefield) and every result containing fatigue. I'm need it to find a specific phrase, not every instance of every word.
Putting the phrase in quotes returns nothing, as does using + between words.

I print a list of applications i use on windows and started searching for alternatives!
I find everything i needed except that! I looked in to many many forums (inc here)... tested more than 50 software but no luck at all!
Free or commercial doesnt matter! The only link between me and my PC is photoscape and this is killing me!
A full noisy tower - 100 cables everywhere just for running one app. (winebottler wont run it normally)

Is a multi batch editor for pictures with "preset" feature. (not a photo organizer or something like iphoto)
I want to be able to add lets say 10 images, load the xxx partner preset
and.. (auto action for that specific preset)
<example>
- resize them with max width 600px
- place a watermark with the name of the partner to a specific location on the image. text watermark with outline color and basic text tools predifined for each preset
- rename them like "partner-01" - "partner-02" - "partner-03" etc etc
-export them in Jpeg format with quality 80 to a subfolder called "partner-xxx" inside the folder with the originals.
Mac Pro :: Transferring Entire Os And Applications From One Hdd To Another
Dec 12, 2009im looking to get a 10,000rpm velociraptor drive and transport all of my current apps and osx from the standard 320 gb drive to the velociraptor. how would i go about doing this? would i need to save everything on an external drive and then transfer it to the velociraptor? or could i just insert the velociraptor into drive bay 2 and then drag everything from the 320 gb hdd in drive bay 1 onto the velociraptor? ive never installed an os on a computer before so this might sound like a dumb question but any information that you might have would be helpful.

Nov 16, 2008Just a few minutes ago, I pulled up iWeb to work on my band's website, only to find that it's nearly all gone. Only one page of the site remains, and everything else just shows a blank screen. When I try and publish it to a folder, it gives me "Publishing error, an unknown error occured." I simply can't have this happen. This website has taken me over a year to create, and now it's trashed. Where does iWeb store the website? Is there some way I can get it back? I've tried everything, but have had no luck.

Jan 13, 2011I'm trying to change an album in itunes. I drag the whole album in itunes: no problem. The artist name is spell slightly different than other albums by the same artist so when I transfer to my ipod you get two artists in your list: problem for me. I select every track in the album, right click and get info. Change the artist name and click ok. The artist name for every track changes however it always leaves the first track on its own while the others move to their own (splitting the album): problem When I check the info/tags nothing seems out of place on that one track? Not the first time this has happened but it seems to be on random albums.
