So top sites seems pretty cool but what if you are at work and shouldn't necessarily be surfing and sites start popping up in 'Top sites' for your boss to become aware of? I see no obvious way of blocking them. The 'Safari 4 launched' post is growing so fast it made sense for me to post this separately.
View 4 RepliesHe says they have a guest Wifi network, but it won't let me access Gmail (which I need for work), Facebook, and who knows what else I might need whilst doing research. I don't know much about networks (I'm a Mac girl; my knowledge of networks pretty much consists of "plug in Airport"). I don't know how they're blocking the sites they're blocking. Can anyone give me a concise, "go here, put in these numbers" kind of solution to ensure that my browser has free access today? I'm willing to pay for a pay service or app, if that's necessary. Not terribly worried about other ports being open; I can live without iChat if I can reach Gmail & Facebook via the web. using whatever the latest version of 10.6 is.

This morning I tried to go to one of my regular sites and OpenDNS blocks me from it.
I don't use OpenDNS. I did a couple of years ago when I was having speed issues with Safari. It didn't help so I dropped it. Turned out that was a modem problem that couldn't handle DNS prefetching. So why is it back? Why is it blocking me? And how do I stop it?

I manually put a couple of sites into the top sites area.. but then even after 'pinning' them into the sites area, they disappear when i re open safari.. it's really bugging me. can anyone help me out with this?

The inability to block flash is probably the main reason I could never use Safari full time. The browser looks amazing and is very snappy, but alas.... I need plugin support.
View 16 Replies View Relatedinstalled what seemed to be the most commonly referred to one -- SafariPlus. It was not the usual easy install -- I had to add a folder in my Library, and move the contents of the download into it. Upon restarting Safari, it would crash immediately -- so I removed it.
I also installed ClickToFlash, and while it worked well, it kind of annoyed me when using, for example, youtube playlists, and i had to click on every single page in order for it to play. I get that it's what it's designed to do, but it wasn't really convenient for me.
I just re-installed SL and while perusing the adblock for Safari site, I found that adblock just works in 32-bit mode.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHere is the situation. my family has someone staying with them our house who is basically addicted to internet pornography. They will be here for a while as they have hit a rough patch in their life and we are trying to help them out.
We already had a block set up with openDNS to effectively block all web sites through our router (apple time capsule) but that doesn't do anything to block p2p file sharing and our guest has figured this out. I discovered this because they are not too computer literate and all of their downloads from limewire and frostwire ended up showing up in their itunes shared library.
Just out of curiosity, now that the App Store is looking through and matching up your already installed software, what about people who have installed illegal versions or shared their serial numbers on more than one computer? Is it possible that the App Store will look at the serial numbers and block such software? It certainly sounds possible. Big brother warning here?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6. There were websites I used to visit without any problems (like www.livestrong.com and gigapedia.com). Then one day (nothing changed hardware or software-wise), I could no longer access these sites from my computer. My friend came over - with his PC - and was able to access it from my network. I was also able to access the sites from my wife's iMac G5 and iPod Touch (same network), but I still cannot access them on my computer using ANY browser (Safari and Firefox). I cannot access the site from anyone's network either --- making me think my MBP is doing something weird with the Network Settings. I keep getting: "The server denies connections. The server might be too busy or might be disabled. Try again a bit later." I have installed Glimmerblocker on Safari and AdBlocker on Firefox, but turning these off does NOT change my results. What do I need to reset or what did I do to cause this? How do I fix this?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI know how to manually add my favorite pages to Top Sites already, and I know about the 'pin' icon in Edit mode. The thing is I want to use Top Sites like a bookmarks page because the UI is quicker to use (imo), but every time I add several sites to it and then restart Safari or browse for a little bit they just disappear or get replaced by some new pages. I made sure they were 'pinned' so they wouldn't go anywhere, but some of them still go away after I browse for a little while. Anybody know why?

View 4 Replies View RelatedHas anybody been having problems with Safari's new Top Sites feature? I've had Safari 4 since the day it came out on public beta, and this feature hasn't seemed to get any better. I seriously dread having to open a new tab, because it automatically opens the awful top sites list. I close my eyes and cross my fingers and pray that I don't get the beachball of death for anywhere from 10-20 seconds. Sometimes it works quickly, especially if I keep testing it over and over. It pretty much just displays a visual of the bookmarks that I already have displayed going across the top of my screen, and I usually just click on the bookmark instead of having to hunt down the page and click on it.

I've been using the new beta for the last week or so and it seems like the websites that appear in the top sites section are almost entirely random ones selected from my history. Some pages that i've visited once for only minutes appear right at the front of the list. I am failing to see any pattern based on popularity.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I start up Safari and load my home page (google.com/ig) it takes way to long (>30 seconds). After doing some testing I found out that Safari seems to be hanging when I make secure requests. I found that out by removing the Gmail and Google Calendar gadgets from my home page and it loaded right away. But then when I go to gmail.com and log in I have to wait again. Also at that time I can't use any other tabs, they all just sit there and spin like they are loading.
Has anyone else had this issue? I know its a Safari issue because Chrome it just fine. Any ideas?
