I'm new mac user and found that a lot of the mac dialogs don't have tab-stops or it could be that I was trying to use the PC-style tab-stopping (simply press the tab key). I wonder if Mac forces user to use mouse to hit certain buttons...or it's just a different set of key control

I have a very bizarre problem. This all started with me wanting to share some iWork '09 templates with a coworker. (On 10.6.1 btw)
The templates *should* be stored in Library->Application Support->iWork->Pages->MyTemplates
But through the finder, no such tree exists. I've got Library->Application Support->iWork'09 and that's it.
I opened up Pages and went to "Save as template..." By default it opens up a file picker dialog starts with the default template folder path above. I can navigate the tree in the file picker dialog (and all my template files are there) but in the finder no such directory exists.
I tried typing the name of my template files in spotlight and it can't find them. But I can open templates just fine in Pages.
I used Onyx to clear some caches, and after that my mouse cursor automatically jumps to the default button in dialog boxes.
I have been looking all over onyx and system settings to find a way to turn this off, but I have found nothing.
How do I turn this annoying feature off?
I'm running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
After installing the update AppleWorks and Eudora crash any time I try to access any kind of file dialog: Save, Save As, Open, etc.

On a day-to-day basis I run: Adobe PS, INDD, and AI, Microsoft Entourage, Firefox and iTunes. Just recently, after an upgrade to Leopard, I added Things and Simplify Media to the list.The problem that happens before (on Tiger) and now (on Leopard) is command+tab switching stops functioning and Expose hot corners and shortcuts stop working.
I'm pretty sure this isn't a Finder crash because before, on Tiger, I could quit+restart Firefox and everything would be back to normal. Almost as if some shortcut had causes the system to act differently or there was some app dissonance?
But now, with Leopard, nothing I quit will cause these two features to act properly until I do a restart. Both features (command+tab switching and expose) are very necessary for my work flow. I have checked SysPref to make sure keyboard shortcuts are default and Univeral Access to make sure assisted devices is turned off.
So for a while I've had AT&T DSL, and it works great. But in the beginning it didn't. All the time, the DSL would lose connection or something so the dsl light would turn red on the modem. It was really frustrating, and we had multiple people come over to try and fix the the problem, but it was never resolved.
That whole time I was mainly using Safari, and it only happened when I was using Safari. Once I realized that, I stopped using it, and went back to firefox. I had no problems with my internet up till now. I tried using safari recently because I really liked the speed because I have snow leopard (I was using safari a bit while I still had cable internet and no problems). The same thing is happening again.
The DSL light suddenly turns red on my modem/router (it's a 2 in 1) while using Safari. It just happens randomly- i cold be surfing for a minute, and then it will just cut out. I have Mac OS X 10.6.2, and it has all the updates. I'm also running the most current version of Safari. I've just tried to reinstall safari, but it still is doing this.
So I have Time Machine syncing with an external drive and its been backing up perfectly without a problem for the last month. I have not plugged in the external drive in a week, but when I plugged it in to backup today, time machine will not back up to it. The computer sees that the drive is there and identifies at as the Time Machine drive but will not backup to it. The external drive is not full and there is no damage on it. Also, in the time machine system preferences window, the oldest, last, and next backup dates are all blank, they were filled before.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt's weird, time machine use to work fine. I have 3 HDD connected to my computer, and one of the slaves is mac journal case sensitive. Backups have been fine for the last couple months. However recently, time machine will not back up exactly a chunk of 222gb of data. When time machine gets to that point, it just stops. No error message no nothing. And at the top, it says "waiting for backup." Nothing else. I reformatted the hard drive guid, mbr, case sensitive etc etc, nothing. I even swapped out the external hdd and same problem.
How do I troubleshoot this or find out what is causing the problem? Is there a particular format time machine doesn't want to backup? Is there a partition format type time machine doesnt like?

I have an issue using Keynote 09.
I have created a presentation that has a m4v video playing in the background.
The video was the first thing I put in and was just placed on the slide and set to play when the presentatation starts.
The video starts at the beginning automatically and plays for the entirity of the presentation. The presentation is only 2 mins long. Over it are a number of different words all with various animations. There is also a music file playing in the background.
I have then recorded the show with manual timings and now when I play it in Keynote it runs smoothly from start to finish. The video continues to play and the transitions are smooth.
HOWEVER, when I then try and export the presentation as a Quicktime file I encounter a problem. The video starts initially at the beginning of the presentation but the minute any other animation kicks in the video freezes and does not restart. I have tried a large variety of export settings but to no avail. I have also spent time trawling the internet to try and solve this problem but no solution found.
It is very frustrating. I need to export it because I need it as a movile file rather than a keynote presentation.
I have a mid-2008 (June) MBP 15". Just upgraded to SL last night. I am having a serious issue with time machine. I've been using it with the same external HD since I bought my mac last year. No issues up until I installed SL last night. This morning (my first backup since upgrading), time machine started backing up (~ 9Gb) but just stops at around 300Mb. The clock keeps spinning, but there is no change in the amount backed up.
I'm reading that other folks are having this issue as well. Has anyone figured something out?I've run disk repair (nothing found), restarted my mac & external HD (several times each), and cancelled and restarted the time machine backup (several times). Each time it freezes at a different amount (i.e. 34Mb, 284.2Mb, etc...).
Does any body know, how to merge Podcast episodes from different albums and subscriptions, together? Lets say: I have news; collected for one week; I'd like to listen those in one episode, continues each after another, without stoping between episodes. My iPod Nano plays one, and than I have to swich to next one manually. Not convenient, when running in Gym or so. Could not find any good script for iTunes or some things can be done in iPod, after episodes have been transferred in.

I got my computer yesterday, it's a iBook G4 OS X 10.5.8. The charger worked fine until around six o' clock. Then it wouldn't charge. We switched the power pack and it worked for an hour or so, and then the same thing. What can I do? I CANNOT take it to be fixed.

I'm running Windows 7 (Mac Pro 200) with Bootcamp 3 drivers, every thing seems fine, but it appears that after awhile the graphics card fan seems to stop. Has this happend to anyone?, I downloaded the Catalyst drivers so can hopefully turn the fans on manually but this is'nt ideal.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've noticed after upgrading to 10.6.5 that my keyboard will not work when I come back after an extended period of time away from the machine. At first, after applying only the 10.6.5 update, neither keyboard nor mouse would work unless I unplugged and replugged the keyboard (the mouse is connected directly to the KB). Later, I installed the combo update, and then the mouse worked but the keyboard still wouldn't. This is after my display sleeps - as long as I continue to use the computer, everything works fine. I have a mid-2009 Mac Pro 2.66 GHz quad-core (Nahalem) but with the older (clear, G5) keyboard and a mighty mouse.

The hook still comes down and "hooks," but as soon as I let go of it, the top pops back open. It's been getting progressively worse over the past three weeks or so, but now it won't stay closed at all. It's not a big deal when I power the thing down, but I can't just close it and put it to sleep now. (Especially one's that don't break the bank!)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.5.2 on a 2GHz C2D BlackBook. Recently I've encountered 3 symptoms that suggests Quartz Extreme stops working after the computer's been running for a while (and by a while, I mean it could only be a couple hours).
I've recently (a few days ago) set my desktop picture to change every minute. It's supposed to fade smoothly between pictures, and it did for a while, but then eventually I noticed the fading transition had stopped and the pictures were just switching without any kind of transition. The problem was resolved after a restart.
I don't use iMovie often. But I opened iMovie '08 yesterday and I got the following error message: "iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme." My only option was to quit iMovie. I noticed my desktop picture was also not doing the transitions any more. After a restart, both problems were resolved.
Today, I got the same error message in iMovie and the desktop isn't transitioning again. I haven't restarted yet, but I assume it will fix itself when I do. Also, I tried adding a widget to my dashboard to see if I get the ripple effect, to test my theory that Quartz Extreme (or is it core image, or core graphics?) stops working after a while. I did not get the ripple effect I usually get when adding a widget.
Since I just started using the changing desktop feature and 10.5.2 is a new update, I don't know if one of those could be causing the issue. I'll try turning off the desktop transitions and see if it continues.
My macbook pro keyboard and my silver Apple bluetooth keyboard (primary keyboard) randomly stop working in Finder can anyone explain? Heres the details:
I usually use my wireless keyboard, and when this happens the keyboard keeps working with everything else, and only stops working in Finder i.e. I can't edit the names of files or even click through files with the arrow keys. (the Macbook Pro keyboard also stops working-only in Finder-during these times too as I just tested..)
Also, Finder keeps working its not frozen or anything, I can click around in it with the mouse and open files/apps, etc.
This has only happened approximately 3 or 4 times (I've had the keyboard since the new ones were released and the computer for 1.5 yrs)
Lastly, when I restart the OS (10.4.11) the problem disappears for a week or more..
So to preface my problem let me just say that ive got my own macbook which works on the same wireless network with no faults at all, so i assume its not an error with the networking hardware.
For xmas i bought my parents a macbook, recently (not sure how recently as theyve only just told me its happening) they can be browsing the web then all of a sudden the internet takes ages to load, it stalls on 'trying to connect' for a long time (40+ for each web page).
Ive tried using firefox and the same thing happens so it looks like its not safari specific, during this time i cannot ping [URL] through a terminal either or if i can the response time is unbelievably slow.
Now, ive tried disabling ipv6, ive set the dns servers to opendns and none of this has fixed it. if i click on the airport utility and turn it off and the back on it fixes the problem for a short period of time before it happens again.
I have some strange problem after updating my MacBookPro4,1 to 10.5.7. After a while (can be a few hours) the trackpad and keyboard stop working. When I then put the MBP to sleep and wake it up, both work again but only for about maybe 5-10 minutes. This can be reproduced (put to sleep, works for 5min, put to sleep, works for 5min, etc.) When I reboot it works again for some hours.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just change a old MBA 1.6 GHz (OSX 10.6.1) for MBA 2.13 GHz (also OSX 10.6.1) and haven problem with EyeTV (3.2.1 version) via Pinacle Hibrid Stick 330e. Soft start excellent - I can see video for few minutes (3,4-5) and than video stops - audio is going (but only for next 2-3 minutes). To see something I have to restart soft or unplug an plug stick to USB port (I do not use HUB, I only use extension of USB cable - MBA have not so much space to plug directly Pinacle Stick). I have to say that on old MBA everything works fine, same OSX version, same USB extension cable, etc.). I try to see if soft and stick works on another computer - I use MacBook Black version (last black configuration) and results: no problems. Video do not stops! I try to find solution on macs forums but I did not find anybody who have this problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that my keyboard will randomly stop working after switching Spaces or using other shortcut keys. When I hit the CMD-arrow key to switch spaces, the Spaces box that shows which space you just moved to stays on the screen and the keyboard completely stops working. A logout of required.
Running 10.6.2 with all updates applied.
I have a lot of usb stuff strung out: 6 kbds, 5 mice (three kinds), 4 audio interfaces, 7 hubs not counting in kbds, etc.; most powered. At the root of the USB tree is a KVM switch feeding a new MacBook (10.5.2) and a G5-Quad (10.4.11) This all pretty much works fine and runs for weeks without hiccup.
But tonight, one MacPro kbd, quit. It's at the end of the chain, but it has been working fine. Plugged into hub one level up it's fine. A new Apple thin-flat kbd plugged in where it was works fine.
When MacPro kbd plugged in, the light on the hub port flashes. Other stuff (Wacom tablet, Insignia speakers) works fine and lights the lights. With other stuff pulled (use less power?) kbd fails the same.
So what's up with this sort of problem, and how does one trace/debug? Usually, when (once in a while) there's a USB problem, just unplug and plug back in and it works again.
Wifi is nog working with Lion. it stops a few times during a session......

I'm really struggling to understand why my 2010 mini has trouble playing some QT videos that my 2006 mini handles just fine! The two machines are:

VRAM: 64MB

The problem first presented itself as I am working on a generative video installation using Max6. I've used the older mini for the installations for some time with very few issues. I've been using the newer mini for video processing, compression, and editing and making DVDs and blu-ray disks. No issues there that I have noticed either. However, when I recently tried to use the newer mini to run the generative video, I noticed that several of the videos were stopping and then starting up again (skipping). I know that Max can sometimes have trouble with videos due to processing issues - but why would it work fine on the older, less powerful machine and only have issues on the newer one?
To begin troubleshooting, I ran one of the videos in Quicktime on the newer mini to see if similar issues arose, and they do. No problem on the older mini. The video is formatted in DVCPRO50 anamorphic format, and I am using the same monitor in both cases (1440x900,60Hz), connected by VGA to the monitor PC input. I know that Quicktime can have similar issues with very large files sometimes, but I still don't see why the newer machine stumbles with the same video that runs fine on the older one.
I've been hoping to start using higher resolution videos in this work, but am worried that if a newer machine can't handle these SD videos, HD will be worse. I like the minis for installations because of their small size and portability.
anything i do brings the spinning beach-ball all the time, I already installed lion clean, nothing, still doing it.

Trying to download Mavericks, the download stops every time at 1.03GB, and clicking retry doesn't start it.
I get the message "The application you tried to download could not be downloaded. Check your internet connection and try again."But if I click Cancel, and then restart the download, it works perfectly again up until 1.03GB.
So I'm a little unconvinced that it's a problem with my internet connection, considering I have full access to the web and clicking retry shows it working and connecting.
when i am booting up my macbook pro it will just stall at just before half way and i will have to shutdown and turn on again. It will happen 3-5 times until it finally works. But sometimes it works the first time. This started to happen about 1 month ago after i installed OS X Yosemite.
