Applications :: Finding Directory Comparison Software?

Jul 21, 2010

I am looking for some (prefer free) software that will compare 2 directories and tell me what is different in each dir or what files are missing.

Dir #1 has File 1,2,3,4,5

Dir #2 has File 1,2,3

I am looking for a program that will tell me dir 2 is missing files 4 and 5.

Applications :: Finding Photo Comparison Software

Sep 1, 2010

I have looked at the online material for Aperature and Lightroom and am not sure if either of these will allow me to do this. I have been using finder but that is a painful process as I need to have 11 windows open and keep jumping back and forth between windows. There has to be a more efficient way to get through this.

So, I am curious if either of the programs I mentioned would do the trick, or some other software? Programs like PSE really don't help for this. Adobe Bridge was somewhat useful but also needs multiple copies of the program running at the same time to use multiple folders.

Applications :: IWorks In Comparison With MS Office

Aug 4, 2010

I have recently purchased my first Mac a few months ago. While I use a Windows PC at work and had previously used a Windows PC and home, I was frustrated with the home laptop and switched to a Mac. Now my question is, I am looking for a Word Doc and Spreadsheet application for personal use at home and I am not sure which to get, MS Office for Mac or IWorks. I currently use Word and Excel (and am pretty familiar with both) at work and previously at home. I do basic like writing letters, expense spreadsheet calculations, account listing, etc. I would also like to be able to sent Word and Excel docs from my work computer (in MS Office for Windows) to my home computer and be able to work and edit them and send them back. Not sure if IWorks would let me do that, or if MS Office for Mac is the way to go.

Dec 20, 2008

I'm trying create 200 MB rar files out of a 700 + MB directory. When I check "split archive" and select "user defined" under the volume size dropdown and click create rar, it creates 500+ rar archives! Nowhere does it ask me how big I want the volume size for "user defined". Does anyone know how to use this app? I mean, I know how to alternatively archive into 200 mb parts (zip them, split & concat the zip file) but that requires the user to unarchive twice.

OS X :: Creating Folders In Applications Directory?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm a mac newbie coming from linux. In order to not have all applications in the /Applications top folder, I create some empty folders in the /Applications folder and move apps there (to group apps).

Reflections/questions:

It seems to be ok for me to create folders in /Applications that are owned by me without giving a password, which seems a little bit funny. (/Applications belong to the admin group as also I am in and admin group can write in /Applications. In Linux I have to to "sudo mkdir" to make folders in the corresponding folders).

Is there any problem with moving apps (owned by root) into these new folders that are owned by me?

Applications :: Word Files Will Not Open From Directory?

May 3, 2008

Mac Word 2004 for teachers/students was working smoothly for me until the last month. It seemed as though the problem started when I tried to open (by mistake) an excel doc in Word - or vice versa. Now, Word will not let me open a file from the directory. (It will let me select the recently opened docs on the drop-down menu.) When I click "File" and "Open", the screen freezes and eventually pulls up a white screen with lines on it - looks like a writing tablet, which is the edition's logo - and it says "Open" on top.

OS X :: Renamed Home Directory On MacBook - Applications Reset

Feb 24, 2010

I accidentally renamed the home directory on my macbook! its a mid 2007 model running 10.4.11 Tiger and I don't normally restart or log off my computer. I accidentally changed it the other day with a track pad misclick while I was multitabling on pokerstars and went back and changed it back later once I realized what I had done. I didn't think it was that severe of an issue until I started experiencing problems with apps.

I have found the folder with all the old stuff in the users file but I don't know how to apply all the old settings to my account. ALL my applications have restarted and my itunes is completely wiped. All the music files are on the computer but every time I log off all apps are again reset. How do I get everything back to normal?

Mac Pro :: Disk Performance With OS X / Windows - Comparison

Does anyone have any comparisons of disk performance under OS X and Windows? So, I'm led to wonder: which OS on a Mac Pro has better disk read/write speeds?
* - Really rather rough and silly descriptions follow
Windows - snow being crunched underfoot
OS X - a spun coin settling on a table

OS X Mavericks :: One Way Recursive Folder Comparison?

I know about the Diff terminal command, but is there anyway to complete a one way comparison?  In other words, I know there are about 9000 images in folder B that are not in Folder A, and I do not want to wait for Diff to compare the two folders and produce a several thousand item long list that includes those images.
