And also something to mention, Server Admin 10.5.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.2 DOES NOT WORK on Snow Leopard. The only way to manage my Server is to use Screen Sharing app <-- IT SUCK.
I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro. This is my first experience with a modern computer from Apple and in very first contact with Mac OS "Snow Leopard".
I am trying to configure that Mac to share the resources of my Windows XP small network at home. For that I have followed several instructions I found published on the Internet by other Mac users who were trying to do exactly the same as I am trying to do.
Unfortunately I face a quite basic problem all the time: when I follow any of the posts/ instructions, sooner or later, I cannot move forward because I cannot find where exactly the DIRECTORY ACCESS (or any functionally equivalent configuration program like that) in Mac OS Snow Leopard is located.
I'm trying to host a Cydia Repo. I have Snow Leopard. I'm supposed to put the DPKG files in /sw/bin, but that directory doesn't exist in Snow Leopard. Where am I supposed to put the files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedOur users logon to our 2008 Windows Domain and their windows home folder comes up as a folder called 'Work' on the mac taskbar. This is fine.When they open Microsoft Word e.g. and do a save you can't see this 'Work' folder in the Finder tree. Do I have to set up some kind of script - I just want a shortcut to this 'Work' home folder in Finder....how can you put one there automatically? Is there any easy way so if they save to their mac 'Documents' folder it just get's re-routed to their 'Work' folder?

Then, I logged on with the same account that I have and I found that all the old folders have been moved to a new folder in the new directory under the old directory name.How to get back!I tried to rename it again by replacing the new name with the old name but it didn't work.. is there anyway to undo the change!!

I have a couple of new users I've added to our directory recently. They are unable to connect to our internal jabber (iChat) server. Users that have connected previously are experiencing no difficulty. A quick overview of the layout of the system: two XServes, one is OD primary (aspen) the other is OD replica and iChat server (vail). I've modded some config files (long ago) to allow user IDs for jabber to be user@ourcompany.office instead of user@vail.ourcompany.office. It works quite nicely.
Excerpt from the logs shows a failed login attempt followed by a successful login attempt. Successful logins are happening from Messages (beta), iChat under Snow Leopard, and Pidgin under windows. We use on our Server the OD. About 25 User can ue with their Account every Computer in the Office. Now wo saw the size of the harddrive has very less free space. When we click Apple-I on the users we see it is very low space uses, but this is because all the private folders are blocked. Is their a way to calculate the Open Directory size of every User Account?

I am running an open directory/active directory network. Authentication is from the Windows server 2003 active directory. It has worked fine until the last month. Now clients stop authenticating & when I check the AD plugin it says network accounts are not available. I can force the server to unbind, then renew the binding & everything works great.Is there any work around or fix for this other than upgrading the windows server to 2008?

I have set up an automator service that TAR's a folder into an archive for me and it works quite nicely. Idealy however, I would like to be able to highlight several folders, right click and have automator tar each folder into it's own TAR archive, but do it one by one.

I'm not 100% sure so I guess it would be a good time to verify, is there a problem with having the system try to TAR multiple folders at one time? If it is not a problem then I guess this discussion itself is pointless and I can simple right click on each folder and select "TAR Folder" and just wait until they're all finished. I would think that it would be ideal for the system to do each one individually and not try to do them all at one time.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to bind my MacBook Pro to an active directory. I have the DNS records setup to point to the right DNS server (which is the active directory server) and then when I go into Directory Utility and type the name of the active directory it gives the following error:

I also tried KH.local which is the actual domain name but got the same problem. I tried going into terminal and pinged kh.local and it came back with a response.

I've just acquired a late-2005 G4 iBook with Leopard 10.5.8 installed. All seems to be well except for an oddity with the listing in the top, home directory. I would normally expect to just see folders for Applications, Library, System and Users but, for some reason, folders normally hidden such as bin, cores, etc (alias), private, sbin, tmp (alias), usr, var (alias) and Volumes are also shown. "dot" names remain invisible unless intentionally made visible.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted all of the files on a friend's portable drive, when using terminal to try to delete a very large folder (the Trash Can was not working it was so large)--since the files/folders were very recently deleted I am looking into data recovery software to get the files back. The problem is that the HFS file system seems to be designed in such a way that once a folder/file is deleted, it is very difficult to recover it's name even if its data can be recovered, so most data recovery programs (such as FileSalvage) will recover only known file types and give them a a number (such as 0004.jpg). Does anyone know of any Mac/HFS recovery software that has found a way around this particular issue and can recover data with the folder structure/file names intact?

In the Terminal, top shows me that process 15, DirectoryService, is using between 45 and 248%(!) of my cpu, and hdiutil is also using much more than I expect. What is causing this, and, more importantly, how can I make it stop. It is making my computer unusable.
It doesn't seem to matter what applications are running or if I have Web Sharing on or off. I suspected it was the flood of attempted logins from having Web Sharing on, but turning it off doesn't make any difference.

Running OSX 10.5 and I encounter this problem on a frequent basis. The symptoms are the beach ball when coming out of sleep. I run onyx and find an invalid volume directory. Running first aid from the boot cd fixes it but it always comes back within a few days.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a large music library that I have amassed over the years, but when I began ripping CDs there was no artwork on the iPod so it didn't matter, but now it would be nice to have it. I purchased a program called coverscout that finds artwork and automatically attaches it to the songs, but I have a problem. Somehow I have made every song read only. The program can't write the artwork to the tracks unless I change each one to rw. I tried to change just the directory, but that doesn't work.
Is there a terminal command to change all files in a directory to read/write? Just for your information all the songs are organized in a folder called music then subfolder of the artist and then a subfolder to that of the albums. It would be great to just change it all and then when I'm done change it back to read only.
I would like if it is possible to specify the destination folder for safari downloads before it starts.
So that a pop-up box will appear when I click a download.

View 18 Replies View RelatedIm trying to set up NetJukebox on XAMMP and I need to paste in the file references to where my music is held on the HDD. Now, on a PC I would just be something D:/Music/ or something, with 'D' referncing the drive where the folder Music is held. The trouble Im having is doing this but with the 'Macintosh HD' drive, because I dont think that /User/*UserNameHere*/Music/ will work by itself. Is there a way I can include the drive name as well in that folder reference?
