OS X :: Suggestions Regarding The Applications For My Macbook?

Jul 1, 2010

I am a newbie to Macs. Wanted to know whether or not do we need to install a separate security software for this system (Antivirus, Internet Security, etc)

Some good image editors (free)

And an alternative to Corel Draw Suite on Mac.

A free or paid download manager like IDM for windows.

Any must haves for macs (as are for windows)

Now my transition from the PC to the Mac has made my life really peaceful which was not the case when I used Windows with all the updates, pop ups, antivirus and security management, updation, and system maintenance.

Therefore to make it a bit messy i started googling around for applications and stuff which I would never actually require but would install and tinker around with. I was really confused with the various sources available. Kindly mention a few reliable and updated sources and forums where I could post my Mac specific queries and issues (if there are any) like installing Windows in conjunction with OS X etc.

Applications :: Suggestions For (very) Basic Free Photo Editors?

All I literally want to be able to do is get two separate photos and put them side by side and export them as one photo. Basically I want to make a wallpaper. I've heard about GIMP but is that what I want? Is there a more basic photo editor?

Applications :: What Is The Best Road Design Software?

Jan 24, 2010

I have a friend who is a "Road Design Engineer" (I am Vietnamese, I'm not English native speaker, so maybe I translate incorrectly the job of my friend; Road design Engineer I mean a person who design the roads, street, bridge, sewer etc.). He usually use a Vietnamese software which runs on Windows to design roads. But, he want to buy a new Macbook Pro and he wonders if any programs run on MAC can do this job.

May you tell me and my friend what is the best/most well-known software which designs Road.

I am getting my first Mac soon and am a photographer. I am of course getting the Adobe design bundle first in order to have Photoshop and other programs of interest to me.

But after that I will be getting Aperture or Lightroom... I can get Lightroom for $98 because I am enrolled in college. But if Aperture is better to some, I would consider it over LR.

Applications :: Adobe Design Premium Or Master Suite?

Apr 10, 2009

I'm a college senior soon to be venturing out into the workforce in the fields of advertising and public relations. I love design and have thoroughly enjoyed working with Photoshop and InDesign - but plan on venturing more into web design and teaching myself how to make an awesome website. My school has really good discounts on Adobe software and so I'm torn over whether to purchase Design Premium at $300 or the Master Suite at $500.

I don't know how to use most of the extra tools in the Master Suite - but think that some of them could be good tools to learn. Those familiar with the software. I know this is a good deal. Should I go ahead and buy the whole package even if I'm not sure when I would use the extra features of the Master Suite?

IMac :: Using Ambient Lighting?

Nov 21, 2009

When trawling through the ridiculously long thread showing pictures of peoples Mac setups, I noticed an awful lot of ambient lighting and want to try a little myself. It's a painfully wanky thing to do, but with the iMac in the living room there just isn't any room for an ordinary lamp so a blue LED could look stunning.

What do people use for ambient lighting? It seems to be that, with USB ports being in fairly good supply behind the iMac it would be criminal not to go with something USB powered.

I found this: [URL]

Looks like it might do the trick, and even comes with a suction cup which *might* attach to the back of the iMac or the stand. The same light is also available in white, red, green or a colour changing version, but I'm convinced blue is best.

IMac :: Lighting Conditions Changing?

Sep 2, 2009

Since as long as I can remember, my August 2007 aluminium iMac always wakes up as soon as I turn my lamp on or off. Maybe, one in seven nights it won't wake, but most of the time it does.

It's a real nuisance having it do this, and to add to the annoyance, the iMac randomly wakes up sometimes, day or night. I can be in bed and it will just come on, all systems go, or get in from work one day and find it's been on since 10AM that morning (wasting energy).

I've reset PRAM and SMC (whatever they're called) about a thousand times, I clean installed Leopard 3-4 times and just did a clean install with Snow Leopard (I didn't upgrade, I wiped my HD and installed fresh) yet it still happens.

It's totally beyond me why it just decided to wake itself up every now and again and also why 90% of the time it decides to wake up when the lighting conditions change

MacBook Air :: Brightness Settings With Different Lighting Situations

Nov 16, 2010

What setting do you use on your new MacBook Air? I'm currently at an older non-LED MacBook, and when working with the LED-screens on the newer MBPs I kept noticing that I couldn't really find a proper backlight settings. The top 3 where OK but everything was almost too bright, while lower settings made everything look very dark and greyish.

I played around with the Airs a bit in the store, and I think they were very similar in that regard. But it's hard to say because of the store lighting and not being able to use it in various situations with different lighting.

MacBook Pro :: Fixing Inconsistent/blotchy Keyboard Lighting?

I took the back off and cleaned and dried it all out. after letting it dry for a while I turned it on and everything seems to be working normally apart from a few sticky keys which I'm slowly taking off and cleaning and the facet that the keyboard lighting is no longer consistent. So my question is How does the keyboard lighting work exactly and how might I go about fixing it? here are some photos so you can see what exactly is going on.

OS X :: Finding Suggestions For Improving A G4 AGP

Nov 7, 2010

First time user of the forum. About a year or two ago, I acquired an older Mac G4 AGP from someone who said it was "broke" and was going to recycle it. Turns out the OS just needed to be re-installed, so she is up and running. I initially installed Leopard, but it didn't run as well as I would've liked, so I put Tiger on it (running much better). After that, I maxed out the memory @ 2GB(4 x 512MB PC133). Then I installed a 7200RPM HD to replace the slower drive. I also installed a DVD R/RW and maxed the processor to a 1.8GHz single core. Right now, I'm looking to bump up the video card. It's my understanding that the 9800 is best card for this system, but I'm not looking to spend that much. I will only be using this system to stream music from Grooveshark and Pandora, so it needs to run Flash content well. Currently, it has the ATI Rage 128 Pro with 16MB VRAM, which is next to nothing. Like I said, I don't need a crazy card, but I'm not sure the difference between one 64MB card and another, or should I go up to 128MB.

Hardware :: Suggestions On Replacement Of SuperDrive?

Feb 10, 2006

I have a iMac 2GHZ PowerPC G5 and the SuperDrive has gone out for the second time and it is now out of the 90-day warranty. The original equipment is the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, but it seems to have been made in China by slave labor and gives more problems than any other single component of the iMac. Do you have any suggestions or insights about how to deal with this and/or replace it? Do you have any inside knowledge about updates to the current replacement hardware or anything like that? It's not that I don't want to take the iMac down to the Apple Store for the fix, it is more an issue of dependability and component longevity. My PC gaming rig is three years old and the CD/DVD-ROM has given no problems whatsoever while the iMac is less than a year old and has had the same component go out twice. (Background on the machine -- Machine Name: iMac G5, Machine Model: PowerMac8,2, CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0), Number Of CPUs:1, CPU Speed: 2 GHz, L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB, Memory: 1 GB, Bus Speed:667 MHz, ATA Bus: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-845, Revision: DBN9, Detachable Drive: No)

MacBook Air :: External Projector Suggestions For AIR?

I am looking for some suggestions for a projector that will run, and hook up smoothly on the Air. I don't need top of the line, but maybe around $700.00 is in the budget so far. I want to be able to show keynote presentations, website demos, and maybe some shorter video clips as well.

PS: I did some digging and wondered if the Optoma EP7150 was a good bet. The street price is around 800.00 (but I found a few that were around 500), and there is a newer model out now so the price should be dipping). 2.8 lbs, 2500:1 contrast ratio, 2,000 lumens... and XGA output.
