Applications :: Reunion 9 Versus Family Tree Maker
Dec 23, 2007
I have a Mac and PC. I've been working on my family tree using the ever-so-popular Family Tree Maker. As a gift this year, someone gave me a copy of Reunion 9 for Mac. Knowing that I'm picky tho they also gave me a gift receipt. Should I bother opening it? Is it that much better/different from Family Tree Maker? I'm "guessing" since they both import/export GED, moving the data between the two is not difficult. Is there something one does better than the other? I'm not all together too pleased with the sample web-output of either of them (so far) but some guidance as to which is easier to work with and generally looks the nicest would be nice. Anyone use both have a firm positive/negative to say about either? Other than Reunion being on my mac instead of my pc, is there anything worthwhile it brings to the table?

My father-in-law is considering switching to macs, but a deal breaker is whether or not he can continue to use his genealogy information. He's been using Family Tree Maker which is peecee only. I've read that Reunion is a good mac alternative, but will he be able to transfer his data from FTM to Reunion? What if anything would he lose?

with leopard, you could take the install CD and install it on a billion computers, because it never asked you for a serial number...
is this the same case with snow leopard?
or does it really come with a serial number?

I am looking for a webpage maker software like iweb but could not find a suitable one, I have tried several templete based software such as rapidweaver and sandvox but i found them too limited to make a custom work.
Dreamerweaver is too complex, I do not have time to all those staff, iweb is ok but just not enough to make a custom work.
Are there any other software to suits my needs ?

I looked at: http://www.osflash.org/ and could not find too many mac things. I'm not worried about complicated action script or whatever, in fact I have a free maker now, (http://www.soft32.com/download_203443.html) but it dose not have action script, that's why I need one that does, for lets see, less then adobe's outrageous $699!

I'm thinking to buy the iWork family pack with some friends so that we can install it on our macs and divide the price up, it's a lot cheaper!
But, in the apple site they say this:
Quote:
Install the iWork Family Pack* on up to five Mac computers in your household.
So my question is:
Can you only install it in your household? Is there any way the software knows the 5 computers are not in the same place?
Or can you install them in just any 5 computers?
AND- Do you think it's a good idea to buy it now? I don't know if there's a new version coming soon
EDIT- I read that the only difference between the normal and the family version of iWork is the licence. So if I buy the cheaper one, can I still install it in more computers and never get cought? Or will it stop working after I install it once?

I've heard Office:Mac isn't that great, and doesn't make up for what iWork 09 is missing. So I'm wondering what people think about it and why does it get such a bland reputation? Also, do people use a combination of the above? Such as iWork and Office:Windows? Both Offices? I do mainly word processing, some soft Excel work (no hardcore giant spreadsheets...yet), and general PowerPoints for presentations. I have access to cheap iWork/Offices (school discount) and a family pack of the top-level edition of Office:PC (family) so it isn't a big deal to get any of the above.
Lastly, what's the difference between Camino and Firefox? I use Firefox currently and love it, mainly due to the add-ons (weather at the bottom, Gmail alert, skins, page views, other customizations). Tabs seem to be on all browsers these days, so are there any other key differences?

Indeed, is there a difference? I notice that Family costs more than the other one, but I can't make out what difference there is in the description.

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.
The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.
I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.
The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.
The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

I have a Macbook running OS X 10.5.8
The print to pdf function is great, but I've noticed that for longer documents it divides the file into 3 separate sections/documents. This is annoying.
Is there anyway around this within the operating system, or is there other software like "cute pdf writer" for the mac . It seems that "cute" was only written for PCs since Macs tend to not need it.

I have a 17inch intel iMac, early 2006 (the first release). A couple of days ago it decided it no longer wanted to boot up. Inserting the install DVD and running disk utilities verify/repair, it said that the volume had an invalid b-tree node size, and attempting to repair the volume failed.
Everything is backed up from this computer, so at this point in time I am only worried about getting it running again. So, I dug deeper to resolve the issue.

I have two disks containing data organized in a RAID 0 array. I have a MacPro running Snow Leopard. Recently, the RAID array does not show up in the Finder and is not accessible. Disk Utilities can't inspect or repair the disks because of the dreaded B tree node size error.
Can these disks be salvaged? Can the data be recovered?

Is there a way to search for files within a folder tree that have a specific label or, more what I want, that do not have a label at all? I have a folder tree that contains a large number of files, a small number of which do not have a Finder label assigned, but I cannot convince the folder search (Spotlight) to show me the files that do not have a label.

So Apple is adding the Firewire port to their 13" unibody Macbook "PRO" line.
As an incoming new apple user, what do you recommend for software to capture, burn ect on Macs?
I am really only used to Pinnacle, MS Movie Maker on PC's, so looking for a comparable product...
Must be very User Friendly....

I have also tried right-clicking, but this only gives me the following options: Get info (just leads back to app description in app store), Show in Finder, Show in iTunes store, and Delete.
Info:
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I set up a RAID using 4 Segate 320GB SATA drives in it's own box. It is connected to my G5 (OS 10.4.1) via a Highpoint RocketRaid 2210 card. After 2 months, I have gotten the b-node tree error twice. The drive fails to mount and drive utilities (including Drive Genius, DiskWarriror) can't fix it. I was able to use Drive Rescue 2 to get the info off of it, but I am concerned as to why this keeps happening. I can reinitialize the drive and get it working again, but this is not a solution.

Intel, the maker of processors for Apple's entire line of Mac computers, reported record earnings this week, with its strongest first quarter in the company's history fueled by demand for new microprocessors.Intel reported first-quarter revenue of $10.3 billion, with an operating income of $3.4 billion, net income of $2.4 billion, and earnings per share at 43 cents. Officials said it was the company's best first quarter since 1968, and CEO Paul Otellini said the industry is "nearly fully recovered.""The investments we're making in leading edge technology are delivering the most compelling product line-up in our history," Otellini said. "These leadership products combined with growing worldwide demand and continued outstanding execution resulted in Intel's best first quarter ever. Looking forward, we're optimistic about our business as Intel products are designed into a variety of new and exciting segments."
According to The Wall Street Journal, Intel's quarterly profit nearly quadrupled and revenue rose 44 percent. The company also plans to hire between 1,000 and 2,000 new workers, its largest expansion in five years. The company also has an optimistic outlook for the second quarter of calendar 2010, a three-month period that is typically slow for the computer industry.
Otellini also noted that demand for Intel's new processors has been "incredible." Among those are the new Core i7 and Core i5 chips, both of which found their way into Apple's top-of-the-line MacBook Pros with a hardware upgrade released on Tuesday. Both the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, as well as integrated energy efficient Intel HD Graphics processors.Using proprietary graphics switching technology, Apple's latest high-end MacBook Pros dynamically switch between the Intel integrated graphics and a new discrete Nvidia GeForce 330M graphics processor. In addition to offering battery life of between 8 and 9 hours, Apple's graphics switching also ensures compatibility with Intel's new Arrandale mobile processors, which feature the major northbridge chipset memory controller components built in.
In addition to the architectural changes Intel made with the Core i5 and Core i7 mobile processors, an ongoing lawsuit with Nvidia has forced the graphics card maker to halt the development of future chipsets. Apple's software solution also allows users to switch solely to discrete graphics and bypass Intel's low-power integrated option if they choose.addition to Apple's line of Mac desktops and notebooks, Intel supplies the processors that run about 80 percent of the PCs in the world. A global economic downturn that had a severe impact on the computer industry left a mark on Intel, but the chip maker now believes the industry is nearly out of the woods. Otellini said there are signs that companies are ready to upgrade their computers, because it is beginning to make economic sense."It is the first quarter where we have seen some real signs of PC purchases, corporate SKUs picking back up again," the CEO said. "Some of that was wrapped around our new products -- the Arrandale notebook products -- but some of that was also even just some of our older SKUs that are classic running corporate SKUs also picked up. To me that suggests the average fleet of notebooks is four years old out there. The average fleet of desktops is five years old."For the second quarter of 2010, Intel has forecast revenue of $10.2 billion, with 64 percent gross margin. That would be a 27 percent increase from the second quarter of 2009, said Intel Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith.

I'm pretty satisfied with the Marware cover, although it can be a little frustrating when typing quickly..I'm wondering if I should go back, return the Marware cover and pick up the iSkin.
So, for those of you that have any of these in comparing..which do you think is the best?
And yes, I did search and am aware threads like this exist..but I couldn't find any comparing all three, only iSkin vs. Moshi.

I'm trying to decide which product to buy and I was hoping for some advice.
First and foremost I want a device so that I may transfer my VHS tapes to DVD.
Live TV recording is secondary but for the price, I'd like to find the device that suits me best so I can continue to use it after i've transferred all my VHS.
Here are my concerns:
1) I'm going to be moving from the US to Ireland in a couple of months (not sure for how long, could be years+) Obviously there's the whole NTSC vs. PAL, ATSC vs. DVB.
I know with EyeTV 250 it's either or, any ideas if buying some sort of converter is an option (prices, quality)? If I bought just a PAL one, would I still be able to convert VHS or would it be completely unusable in the US?
2) I'd like some sort of HD/Digital abilities. From what I can tell TVMax is analog only and Blackmagic may also be but I can't find more specs on that.
Does this mean they'll be useless once the US undergoes the conversion?
So as of now I'm leaning towards EyeTV 250 but the question are there any forseeable problems with using a PAL to NTSC converter or using a PAL EyeTV in the US just to convert VHS.
