Applications :: Omnigraffle 5.0 Versus Vizio 2007

Mar 25, 2008

I'm taking a college course that uses Vizio for Windows. The database course I'm taking teaches you how to set up a mysql database using Vizio as it sets up and labels the Primary Key and Foreign Key that mysql uses. Does Omnigraffle do this as well? I see where Omnigraffle has the "crows foot" line that is proper symbology in a mysql database structure, but can't find out how to do the Primary Key in it.

OS X :: Microsoft Excel 2007 Windows Versus 2008 (Mac)

Sep 14, 2009

I'm taking a class with a professor who uses Windows. We're using Excel (2003) tomorrow in class, and I'd like to use my Excel Mac to do the class.

Is there a big difference with the Mac version versus the Windows counterpart? Enough to make a significant difference?

IMac :: I3 3.06ghz 2010 Model Versus Mac Pro 3.0ghz 2007 Model?

Sep 1, 2010

I am about to buy a computer and just been doing some research. When I went to best buy and ran a geekbench score on the imac it was like around 5800.

A seller on ebay who is selling a Mac Pro 3.0 ghz just ran the score and posted the results of 6214

[URL]

Based off of this score alone wouldn't it mean that the 2007 Mac Pro is faster than the newer 2010 imac

IMac :: New 27" Versus 2007 24"?

Jul 27, 2010

This is the first release since I got my iMac that I've been seriously thinking of upgrading. Seeing it equipped with such a poor graphics card somewhat makes me question it, though.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be worthwhile upgrading from the 2007 24" to the base 27" that's just been released. I don't do any heavy rendering or anything like that but I do game quite a bit so I'd like something that can run newer games a bit better.

Hardware :: How To Use Vizio VW26L

May 22, 2008

I'm using a Vizio VW26L as an external display using a VGA cable and the DVI to VGA adapter that came with my MBP. My only goal is to get a 16:9 aspect ratio on the Vizio, but the closest option is 1280x768, which slightly stretches everything horizontally. I think that by using a DVI to HDMI cable I might be able to get 1280x720, but I want make sure before I order one.

If there's anyone with a Vizio VW26L using DVI to HDMI, can you confirm whether or not 1280x720 or 1366x768 is supported? I seem to be the only person on the net with this TV.

Applications :: Office:Mac Versus Office - Windows And Camino Versus Firefox

Feb 14, 2009

I've heard Office:Mac isn't that great, and doesn't make up for what iWork 09 is missing. So I'm wondering what people think about it and why does it get such a bland reputation? Also, do people use a combination of the above? Such as iWork and Office:Windows? Both Offices? I do mainly word processing, some soft Excel work (no hardcore giant spreadsheets...yet), and general PowerPoints for presentations. I have access to cheap iWork/Offices (school discount) and a family pack of the top-level edition of Office:PC (family) so it isn't a big deal to get any of the above.

Lastly, what's the difference between Camino and Firefox? I use Firefox currently and love it, mainly due to the add-ons (weather at the bottom, Gmail alert, skins, page views, other customizations). Tabs seem to be on all browsers these days, so are there any other key differences?

Hardware :: Running Both Screens - MacBook To Vizio LCD TV

Jun 4, 2009

So I bought my MacBook a year ago and I just bought cords for my laptop to my TV. I bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI cord than an Xtreme HD cord thats DVI to HDMI. For some reason however I can't get the sound to play off of my TV no matter what, it only plays on my laptop and I was told it would be able to just fine, however for me thats not the case. Second when I link the two screens up together my TV will just have the Background no icon's or anything just the plain simple background. Once I click "Mirror Screens" then my laptop screen is completely small for me and my TV one is just fine, but when I open applications b/c my laptop screen is so small like the "Play" button for movies is nearly impossible to hit because its right behind the dock.

So my questions are: How do I get sound out of my Mini DisplayPort to DVI & DVI to HDMI cord instead of buying an audio cord from laptop to TV.

How can I mirror screens correctly to keep the same size on my laptop screen for when I open things they aren't smushed or hard to play.

Hardware :: Connect MAC Mini To LCD HDTV Vizio Xvt553sv?

Jan 1, 2011

Getting an "Invalid Format" message from my new HDTV (Vizio xvt553sv) when I connect my mac mini. This is a big deal, because the Mac mini is the front end for all my movies and music, which have been digitized. We watch all of our movies on the HDTV through the Mac Mini. So we are movie-less until I get this working.

My Windows 7 laptop shows on the HDTV fine. My mac mini shows on other monitors fine. Some kind of incompatibility between the Mac and the TV. Anyone run into this and have some suggestions?

I have tried all of the TV manufacturer recommended resolution x timing/Hertz settings on the Mac Mini.

Mac Mini model 1.1. , RAM 1.5GB, snow leopard OS, connecting to TV with DVI to VGA connection. (TV only has VGA, HDMI and Component connection.)

Hardware :: Dell 2407WFP A04 Versus Dell G2410 Versus Dell 2209WA Versus Samsung F2380

Nov 2, 2009

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.

The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.

I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.

The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.

The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

Hardware :: Eyetv 250 Versus TVMax Versus Blackmagic Video Recorder?

Apr 30, 2008

I'm trying to decide which product to buy and I was hoping for some advice.

First and foremost I want a device so that I may transfer my VHS tapes to DVD.

Live TV recording is secondary but for the price, I'd like to find the device that suits me best so I can continue to use it after i've transferred all my VHS.

Here are my concerns:

1) I'm going to be moving from the US to Ireland in a couple of months (not sure for how long, could be years+) Obviously there's the whole NTSC vs. PAL, ATSC vs. DVB.

I know with EyeTV 250 it's either or, any ideas if buying some sort of converter is an option (prices, quality)? If I bought just a PAL one, would I still be able to convert VHS or would it be completely unusable in the US?

2) I'd like some sort of HD/Digital abilities. From what I can tell TVMax is analog only and Blackmagic may also be but I can't find more specs on that.

Does this mean they'll be useless once the US undergoes the conversion?

So as of now I'm leaning towards EyeTV 250 but the question are there any forseeable problems with using a PAL to NTSC converter or using a PAL EyeTV in the US just to convert VHS.

Applications :: Import Entourage Files To Outlook 2007?

Dec 14, 2007

I'm not changing back to a Windows user, it's just that I *need* to get my contacts onto Outlook 2007 as well. My contacts in Entourage are organized nicely, with each contact's name and e-mail address. Really simple information. I then go to "Export", and choose to export the contacts to a "tab-delimited text" file (it's my only choice). Basically, I get this .txt file. I then go to my Outlook 2007, and have tried importing both "Comma Separated Values" and "Tab Separated Values" with my .txt file. Unfortunately, while each contact's name and e-mail DO get imported, the format is completely messed up. I get this "map field" window when I choose to import by Tab Separated Values, but I've tried all different combinations, and every time, the names and e-mails simply jumble up altogether. Has anyone tried importing Entourage contacts into Outlook 2007? And if so, can you please give me some instructions on how to do so?

Email recipients using Mac Mail have been reporting that when they get email from me (from Outlook2007 in the PC), it would include all the tags. Also happens when I send as RTF. Plain text is fine.

So I did an experiment and since I am a mac user too, I tested it myself on my mac mail. Test scenario is this:

1. I send email from Outlook2007 (PC) using HTML as default.

2. I open with Macmail, I get garbage. (see below and/or attached file for illustration.)

3. I open same email on Entourage, it's fine.

4. I open same email on webmail, it's fine.

I like the simplistic look of both of them (though they could look a little better ) so I'm not sure which one to buy.

Applications :: Backing Up MB - 2007 - To An External USB Drive Using Time Machine

Apr 10, 2009

I'm currently backing up my MB (2007) to an external USB drive using Time Machine.

I also have a 250gb external drive full of everything I need for work and my music collection. Basically I've realised that if this drive goes down I will probably not be able to do my job, and won't have anything fun to do the rest of the time either because all my stuff will be gone!

This data drive is used daily on Windows XP, 2000 and Vista machines so it's formatted in FAT or NTFS (can't remember which) that Time Machine won't back up from. So TM isn't an option.

Do any of you backup experts know if there's a piece of Mac software or a particular model of external drive that I can get to basically synchronise TWO external drives? I need to be able to back up my external data onto another external drive on a daily basis so I can sleep at night.

Applications :: Apple Mail Cannot Sync With The Exchange 2007 Server?

Dec 9, 2009

So I'm rolling out 10.6 on some Mac Pros in our office. So far it's gone fairly smoothly (aside from the fact that Xerox has decided to not bother make drivers for 10.6). We're switching over to Apple's Mail/iCal/Contacts instead of the buggy Entourage. Of the 4 users, 3 of them are working fine. Sometimes their AD session goes buggy and they can't access shared folders on our server via smb, but a restart fixes it. I have one user who comes in every morning though, and her Apple Mail app can not sync with the Exchange 2007 server. It prompts her for her password and won't accept it. She can access shared folders though via smb and they open up right away, meaning it's recognizing her domain and user/pass with out her entering it manually.

Mac Pro :: 6GB Versus 8GB Triple Versus Dual Channels/PS4 Tests

Jun 30, 2009

I ran some tests on my 2009 Quad Nehalem to try and determine what was up with the triple Vs dual memory "brouhaha".

I posted the results as a new thread because I think it will be useful information for a lot of quad owners, but it was originally going to be a reply to this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=735845

Here we go. Tesselator suggested 3 tests that could show the differences in speed between triple and dual channel bandwidth.

Quote:

As one idea I would maybe try creating a few very large images (16-bit, blank white, blank black, gradient fill) and then duplicating and deleting that layer repeatedly a few hundred times.

So I did them, 10 times each. I could have gone on, but the results were very very stable after the first 2 attempts.

Set-up: a 40Mpx, 16bit image (8000*5000). First test it was simply filled white; second test: black; and third test a black to white gradient. I added a fourth test, using a real (photo) 12Mpx RAW image from my Nikon D300.

I created (took a while!) an action with 350 repetitions of "duplicate layer" and "delete layer", followed by a red fill to let me know the action was done. The same action was used in all four tests.

The computer was restarted before each of the four tests, which may explain the irregularities on the first 1-2 attempts. Nothing else but PS4 was launched.

The results are interesting:

We can clearly see that the simple white and black fills show a speed difference of around 10%.

We can also clearly see that this difference disappears when a more complex image is used. The use of more complex images represents a much more realistical use of PS.

To make things even more realistic, I also tested RetouchActions's speed test on my own 12Mpx image. I use nearly all of the operations of that action on a daily basis, so it's a lot more representative of the work I do on PS.

Here are the results:

The results are clear: 11% increase in performance using 8GB of ram (Vs 6GB) when working on a 12Mpx image.

Added info: number of page-outs after running the 10 test series (after about 45 minutes of intense PS work):
-17K when using 6GB (1.7K page-out avg).
-10K when using 8GB (1K page-out avg).

For me the results are definitive: unless I plan on working only with full black or full white images (not even black and white!), having 8GB is better, even when working on smallish 12Mpx files. I imagine the differences would have been even greater using bigger file sizes of actual complex images.

What would now be interesting: someone with a 2009MP Octo doing the same tests at 12GB and 16GB.
