To take some stuff off my internal HD
I thought i would move my whole itunes library to an external and just have it plugged into my macbook pro when i want to listen to something..
Is this a good idea?

so i followed all of the steps in this support article from apple.
now heres the twist that i need help with.
i recently bought a new imac and i had a 1TB external hard drive from before. all of my music and movies are already on the drive but i didnt have it with me when i first was using my imac so i setup a itunes library on my imac. so when i hit consolidate in itunes none of the music and movies that i had from before are showing up in my itunes.
I am about to order a 1 TB external hard drive to store my photos and iTunes library on.
It will have Firewire 800, so will my iTunes access files on the external drive as fast if they were the internal drive? ( and will iPhoto do the same? )
move iTunes folders/library and all my music from the internal hard drive to an external one? I want to start using an external hard disk as my source of music for iTunes. I'm running tiger 10.4.11 still.

I'm running out of space on my harddrive and am wondering. Is there a way to move some of my library to an external harddrive? Like TV shows and movies that I don't need to access all the time. I don't want to delete anything. I don't want to carry around a harddrive all the time.

And everytime i open itunes it will grab the music from my external hard drive. Also my external hard drive is hooked up to my airport extreme.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an iTunes library of approx. 60GB that is currently stored on an external hd connected via USB to a mac mini. I access this music library via other devices such as ipad, iphone bose soundtouch. Currently the iTunes library is only accessible from the other devices if the mac mini is awake and functioning.
I am therefore considering moving the external hd USB connection from the mac mini to my time capsule which provides the network in my home. I assume that this will provide me with an always on music library rather than one which is dependent on the mac mini. Firstly is this assumption correct or will I still need to have the mac mini awake and iTunes open on it in order to access the iTunes library from an iphone for example?
If my assumption is correct, what steps do I need to go through to relocate the hd from the mac mini to the time capsule and still be able to play music?
I have my iTunes library on a external HD. I purchased a new one with a bigger capacity and I tried to highlight and copy everything to the new drive and it wont let me. A window pops up saying that it cant be copied to the new drive because there are backup items items included or something like that. The drive that I am trying to drag everything to is partitioned so that Time Machine gets 600GB. Could that be what its talking about?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have purchased an external Hard drive to move my grandfather's iPhoto library from his iMac's internal to it (so that it can be accessed by both of my grandparent's accounts instead of just one since they share the same camera), and was wondering if moving it to the external would be enough of a back up or if it should be backed up again? The drive will be partitioned so that there is 400gb available for time machine and 100gb available for "everything else", like the iPhoto library for example. I partitioned it so that time machine backups don't squeeze the iPhoto library space down to 0. Is it nonsensical to have the library back up to the other partition as well since it is on the same drive, or would that in fact be a good idea?

I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.
Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.

Since my iPhoto library keeps getting bigger to the point i cant keep it on my internal small ssdanymore, i have to move it to my external. How can one do that painlessly as possible?
I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? If I were to do this, what would I need to do. Is it as simple as moving the folders that hold these files on to the external. Would the programs find them.

Me wife bought a MacBook to replace her crappy Windows laptop. She's a heavy iTunes user who has downloaded 100+ songs from iTunes and wants to make sure she doesn't lose the songs. I'd like to move all the songs to the Mac iTunes clients, reformat her iPod to Mac, then put all the music, playlists, etc back on her iPod. What's the best way to transfer all her songs to the Mac before formating the iPod?

I'm getting my new iMac today and i have an itunes library on my current macbook(2006, 10.4.11), and i was hoping to move it to the iMac. The files are stored on my external HDD. I can't use the migration assistant because i don't have any firewire cables either. I was also hoping to keep all the ratings and play information ect.
I recently upgraded my internal HD from the factory 120 gig to a 500. Because my itunes library is so large (250 gigs) I had been keeping most everything on an external WD drive. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move all these files from the external to my new internal drive without having to reset all my playlists and such (I have two iphones and an ipad pulling from certain playlists. It would be a huge undertaking to redo all this).
Does anyone know of an easy way to accomplish this? I thought about just copying and pasting all the music directly to the itunes folder. But then when I go to play the song in itunes it says the file cant be located (the external HD is disconnected) and asks if I want it to search for the song. For a few songs this would be fine. But with 46,000 its out of the question.
As a DJ, I rely heavily on iTunes' file-viewing options "Date Added" and "Date Modified" in order to gauge how old files in my collection are. However, each time I move files from my computer to my external, 'date added' and 'modified' reset. Clearly 'moving' files to an external is really copying them to an external, but maybe there is a way to copy library content while retaining or freezing the iTunes library's DATA connected to the content....? Is there a way to get iTunes to realize that the identical files previously on my computer are on the external with respect to 'date added?'
View 10 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

However, all my applications are saved in an iTunes library located in my music folder that saved on the internal hard drive. All songs podcasts etc show the little exclamation mark next to them ... and "cannot be found" except manually.I have - verified and repaired the Passport - all ok Reset and redirected the itunes library in preferences.i am now on the painful step of deleting all tunes .. keeping files and readding them to the library which takes about 2 hours.

I had to install a fresh copy of OS X on a new internal hard drive on my Mac Pro. I'd like to move my iTunes library from my home directory on my old drive to my new one. I'm hopelessly confused about how to do that, now that I'm using iTunes Match and with the recent changes in iTunes structure.

I want to copy my iTunes library from one external drive (currently connected to an iBook) to a 2nd external drive (connected to an eMac). The library is almost 60GB and so can not fit on either machine's hard drive.
The music currently plays through the iBook from the first external drive.
I want to be able to play the same music on the eMac (through the 2nd external drive).
Which is the best way to go about this?
Should I:
a) Connect the 1st external drive to the eMac and manually drag and drop the music from there to the 2nd external drive, or
b)Use Silverkeeper Basckup and do a backup of the Music folder in the 1st drive to the 2nd drive, after connecting the 1st to the eMac?
or is there not much difference in doing either? Or is there a more efficient option using iTunes?
I just bought a MacBook Pro. I have my iTunes library on an external firewire HDD. I want to keep it there, but have iTunes on my new Mac access it. However, even though I have put the path to that drive in iTunes Preferences, the songs there don't show up in iTunes.
The new Mac is authorised, and I have bought a song on the iTunes store, which was saved to the external drive.
So what do I need to do? Do I get one of the library files copied over from the old machine (also a Mac)?
I have a large iTunes library which I manually moved to an external HD about 2 years ago. Back then I did this by literally moving the contents of my "Music" folder to the HD, then launching iTunes while holding the alt/option key and pointing iTunes at the library on the HD. Since then I have learned about the feature of iTunes to change the location where music is stored, then consolidate your library so that the library files are stored locally and only the music resides on the external HD.
Are there advantages to this setup? I am thinking in terms of speed and what happens if you launch iTunes without the external HD attached. I ask now as I have just bought a new MBP with ~250GB free which would allow me to copy my music back to the internal HD then move it back the "proper way".
As it stands I have a windows pc that I hate with about 25 gb of iTunes content that I want to transfer to the MBA. I was just wondering what would be the best way to do it? I was thinking of buying a 32gb flash drive and doin it that way but would I have issues with the format of the drive going from windows to mac?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have roughly a 35gb iTunes library saved to my external hard drive. Initially, I had the files on my internal, but copied the iTunes folder (like Apple's web site told me to do), and went into preferences and pointed the library to my external. After that, I deleted the files from my internal, and voila, everything was working perfectly.
However, I turned my computer off, and the next day plugged my external in, and opened iTunes, but there was no library, just the iTunes intro screen.
All of my music has been stored on an external HDD in a folder: itunes/itunesmusic/. I've gone into Edit, Preferences, Advanced and told it that my I Tunes Music Location is: f:/itunes/itunesmusic But when I open Itunes, I still don't see my songs. I don't want copies of my songs stored on my computer (which is what I think will happen if I "consolidate")
