Applications :: How To Set Default Programs
Jan 13, 2009In Windows there is a way to set the default program to open any file with a given extension.
I can't find any such option in OSX. Granted that I am new to the Mac, but this eludes me.

When I start my iMac, a few programs start along with the computer. I don't want any programs starting by default. I have reviewed the Preferences of these programs, and see nothing to uncheck regarding auto startup. And I don't see anything related to this in System Preferences. How I can start the computer without programs starting with it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to have OpenOffice as the default program to open .doc, .xls and .ppt files, but when I try to set that by chosing the check box that confirms, "Make this program the default program for opening these files?" my choice doesn't "stick" for the next time I open these files. Is there another way to make OpenOffice the default program for these files, or does OfficeMac not play nicely to allow that?

I have a question about using my new samsung tv as a monitor for my macbook. I have all the cables and such and my TV reads the computer. It actually shows the desktop background, mouse, and the toolbar on the tv...
BUT....when i try and open a program such as safari or itunes it does not display the program on the monitor but rather on my macbook screen. It shows the program open on the tv monitor but it shoots off the screen and then opens on the macbook screen.
Also the mouse disappears from the tv monitor screen on the left side only, and when it does it becomes visible back on the macbook screen! Any tips or suggestions on how to get the programs to show up on the monitor instead of the macbook screen?
im looking a good program to download from binarys... used grabit on the pc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedPrograms such as iTunes, EyeTV, Skype, PhotoBooth, etc just RANDOMLY stop responding. I always have to restart my Mac to get them to respond again. The programs work fine on a guest account.
This is my first Mac and this is my only problem with it please help. I don't want to return it to Apple it's worked so great.
Basically I cannot remember the name of two programs I remember I wanted to get but totally forgot the names and browser history does not have the sites.
First program is a booting freeware that lets me choose boot OS Windows XP/Mac and would recognize Linux if installed. The name sounded like ribbit or rbedit.
Second program is a freeware screen capturing program, it allowed me to record my screen for long periods of time or was it pay to use? Hopefully someone can remind me...
I planned on getting these programs but totally blanked out and cant retrace myself.
What are some programs you use that you feel are necessary? What do they do? Why are they necessary? I use smcFanControl, gfxCardStatus, and iStat. smcFanControl obviously lets you control your fan speed. gfxCardStatus lets you choose your graphic card or use the default dynamic switching. iStat is of course the famous widget that basically tells you everything you need to know about whats going on inside. I feel all of these are necessary for me to have complete control of my Macbook Pro.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhile they seem perfectly able to password protect a folder, this folder seems far from secure. In each case, the folder itself is not accessible without entering the password, but the files are visible in the finder under "recent documents".
I was hoping for a program that could securely protect these documents from casual viewing (including the "search for" section of the finder bar) while being relatively user friendly. I don't care about encryption.
I am a potential Mac user and was wondering how deletion of programs and applications work? I understand that most of the files are contained within the installation folder because there is basically no registry for the most part. However, some applications will be tied to the OS right? What is the best way to delete applications completely?

the programs were working fine untill about a week when my computer crashed during an update to 10.5.6. I had to reset the NRAM and PRAM, and then it started up working fine. now when i attempt to open and office program or photoshop, they dont open and it says it has closed unexpectedly.
Also, when i try to reinstal it from the disk, the intallation app closes unexpectedly as well.
Since the crash, safari and firefox open, but i have to reset and relaunch it every time.
This happened to me once before, but i ended up bringing my computer into the mac store and hey fixed it, but i am wondering if there is a way i can do it without having to bring it and not have my computer for a day.

I got my first Mac yesterday after years of crappy Window PCs....the lower end 15 Mac Pro. I had to get Office to make it compatible with PCs otherwise I would have got iWork. I also use Firefox as my web browser. and i know i dont need antivirus but i would like some type of protection. so my question is: what free programs would protect you against privacy and personal issues such as data or spyware? And against Microsoft Office viruses that it brings in? And I know people don't like Java and you should block it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am going to purchase a MacBook Pro and would like to transfer all of my Adobe Programs (InDesign, Bridge and Photoshop CS3) to it from my current MacBook. I have the serial number but do not have the CD.
What is the best way to move these programs? Time Machine, Migration Assistant, drag and drop?
I am trying to sync a folder on my desktop with a folder on a USB drive. Simple, right?
I have seen several programs that (may) do this, but all of the ones that I have seen are $30-$40. I have found several free programs that do something like what I want it to do, but miss the mark by "that much" (for example, Transmit will sync, but only with a network drive). The closest I found was an Automator action, but for some reason the synced items were three seconds apart from each other, so every time it would just re-sync the entire folder (which defeats the purpose).
Are there any free programs that will do a simple sync between two folders?
Basically, before I started using AppZapper for complete removal of the programs, I was just doing the drag'n'drop thing to the Trash when uninstalling programs.
Now I do not wish to keep my MBP polluted with unnecessary cache and other "remnants" of the previous programs that might not have been removed completely by the drag & drop method.
I've downloaded CleanApp, but from the looks of things it seems just like another AppZapper type of a program - for deleting current applications. However, I'd need something to look for possible remains of my previously installed programs.
Is there such a program?
I have a 500 GB harddrive but only a 250 Gigabyte external. I was wondering if I could set it so that time machine only backs up stuff that I think is important rather than my entire laptop.
