Applications :: Damaged ITunes Files - Starting Over
Oct 9, 2009
So the last couple of days iTunes has been hell for me. Couple of days ago, when I opened iTunes like any other time, I was presented with an error message saying my itunes library was damaged. Anyway, long story short, I've started over and created a new one and imported all my songs, podcasts, videos etc in. That all worked well, but I was still missing my precious play counts and ratings, though I was able to import my playlists. So what I did was import one of the itunes database files from the "previous itunes libraries" option. What happened then was that it removed all the files that I purchased after the date in which the database file was created. Annoying as I can't remember every song I've purchased.
The 2 main problems at the moment is that the files I purchased are already in my iTunes media folder, I found that out by just searching some songs I remember, but the matter of remembering each one is impossible. I contemplated the idea of "Add to library" but I think all that does is import everything again into the library rather than find any ones that aren't already in it. Is there anyway to get iTunes to automatically find the files that aren't already my library and just add those? Second problem is I have is the dreaded '!' next to many of my songs, again I am sure that I have these files in my media folder (I've checked), iTunes has just (for some reason) not found those files. Again, is there a way for iTunes to automatically find those files? As opposed to me finding and clicking on everyone of those '!'s and locating the files manually?

I'm using OS X 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.1.1. I'm not very computer literate. When I started iTunes today, I went straight to copy some files into it from another folder. I got an error message about the .xml file and then told files were damaged (I think). I think iTunes started rebuilding the folders but I stopped it and ended up with only 30-something gb of tunes instead of almost 100 gb. All my music is still there in the iTunes/Music folder (I also have 30 back-up DVDs of the library), but I really, really want to be able to keep the Date Added information as this is how I view the music, as well as all the artwork I've manually added. The iTunes Library (Damaged) file is there, as are several Previous iTunes Libraries file.
After a web search, I did the following:
i. Quit iTunes and copied the most recent "Previous iTunes Library" file to the desktop.
ii. I trashed the iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Library (with the logo) files at the top of the folder structure.
iii. I then dragged the copied Previous iTunes Library file into the iTunes/iTunes Music folder and launched iTunes. Should it be dragged into the top-level iTunes folder or where?
It opens, but with absolutely nothing in it. I've tried dragging the Previous iTunes Library file everywhere I can think of (trashing the existing .xml and Library file each time), but still no joy. This latest Previous iTunes Library file is only a couple of months old and I'd much, much rather re-do the last two months music than lose the Date Added and all Playlists etc.

A few days ago, I opened iTunes and a notification appeared saying my Library was "damaged," and then proceeded to reopen with about 500 songs missing. I went through my iPod to find a few of the songs that were on it that were erased from my Library (I haven't synced my iPod since it happened for fear of losing the songs for good), intending to simply re-import them into my Library - but the files were nowhere to be found. I opened Finder and searched for quite a while, but I couldn't find a trace. I've tried opening iTunes while holding down the Option key and choosing a Previous Library, but the most recent of the Previous Library .itl files is the same one - the one missing 500 songs.

I was adding some music to iTunes downloaded through acquisition x, and my external HD (Seagate 320 GB) all of a sudden has no music files anywhere on it. The available space is still the same as when i had 40 gigs of music on it, and iTunes says on opening: "The file "iTunes Library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes Library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes Library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)."
I can't find any .xml or .itl or a (damaged) library file ANYWHERE. THEN the next dialog display says the iTunes application could not be opened, the required file is in use.
So used an applescript to unhide invisible files and folders, and the .Trash is empty, Finder's trash is empty, searched all OVER for any trace of the .mp3 files in my library, but they have disappeared. I also can't unmount or eject, verify or repair my External because it is "in use." The only process running i can see is finder, though I'm not sure.

I recently opened up iTunes to update some of my podcasts. Since my MacBook can keep a charge for about 1 minute (I'm not kidding), it shut down while new podcasts were downloading since I forgot to plug in the charger. No big deal, I think. This has happened to be before. Except when I try to open up iTunes after turning the computer on again, I'm told that something happened to my library, and some file was renamed itunes library(damaged).itl.
Huge problem: there is absolutely no damaged itunes library anywhere on my computer. I'm missing about 2k songs, all of my audiobooks, and all of my podcast subscriptions. Where in the hell could the damaged library have gone? I've read that simply renaming that one and reimporting it brings everything back to normal, but I have no damaged file to do this with. Where does it typically go when something like this happens?

I was listening to music and suddenly my MBP froze, and the song I was listening to got stuck. I was forced to do a reboot. When I turned the computer back on, and opened iTunes, I got a warning message that the "Library was damaged" and that it was rebuilding it from somewhere. It reinstated all my playlists and music fine but all my extensive podcasts, audiobook and iTunes University information is gone! Is there any way to get it back? It took ages to assemble. I have both time machine backups and a series of 'previous iTunes libraries' available in my music folder but I don't really know what they do or how to enable an older library to see if it works.

Had some library troubles with iTunes 9, and decided to do a clean install of not only the program, but of Snow Leopard itself. I was waiting on an iTunes update to come out before I decided to re-load my library in, since I didn't want to risk repeat problems (I've always been one of those bleeding edge-ers, and this is the 1st time I've ever had a problem/held back...guess I learned my lesson). 9.0.1 is out and seems to address the problems I'd been having, but I caught the "start fresh" bug and I want to start over with iTunes. No playlists, play counts, etc need to be saved.
I do have a full backup of my previous system and I'm wondering what the best way to get all of my music back into iTunes is.
- Do I use the Finder to simply drag the contents of my old "iTunes Music" folder into the new "iTunes Media" folder?
- Do I drag the whole folder and drop it onto the iTunes window? (I'm worried this method won't put iPhone apps, ringtones, audiobooks and podcasts in the right place).
- Do I use the import function?
Prior to making the backup, I did upgrade to/select iTunes Media Organization

I was upgrading from iLife 05 to 06 today, so I went and deleted all the 05 apps. but iTunes wouldn't delete because it said "ituneshelper" is in use. So I went to the ActivityMonitor and quit the process and then i was able to delete it. So then I installed iLife 06 and everythitng worked fine except for when i tried to open itunes, i got a message saying "Cannot be opened. iTunes is damaged or incomplete". So i tried totally deleting it again and then downloaded it off of [URL]. As I was going through the installation process, I got a message saying, "There is nothing to be installed." (as if iTunes was already on the computer or something, but it wasn't)

I noticed that some system files are damaged. They are owned by strange groups/owners and the file size is zero. Here are some examples:
Code:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 133312 20 sep 09:37 launchctl
-r-xr-xr-x@ 44093 root 8629311 0 4 mei 2008 link
-r-xr-xr-x@ 44093 8629310 wheel 0 4 mei 2008 ln
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root wheel 73696 12 nov 02:51 ls
I repaired my HD and fixed some chain links, any idea to fix these files?

How do I find 13 files which Property List data is damaged? Running DiskWarrior's Check files feature lists 13 files with "Property List data is damaged that can not be repaired"Although DiskWarrior gives the Location of each searching and looking in the usual .plist - locations I can not locate any of these files. All of them are labeled Properies.plist and BuildVersionHistory.plist As locations all start with: OS X Mavericks/.DocumentRevisions ending with: .pages/Metadata/ Since My Mavericks (up to date) still acts like Molasses I am thinking that this manyfiles with damaged Property List data.

I have an iBook G4 that runs on OS X. Today, my software update box popped up, and I downloaded the new version of itunes. It worked. Then the other update didn't finish. I'm not sure if that's connected. Now, my itunes won't open. When I first tried, nothing would happen. So I restarted the computer, but it wouldn't full restart (stuck on the box with an apple, acting like it was starting up but never did). So I did an archive install with my discs. That worked. But now when I try to open itunes, a box pops up and says that "you cannot use this application with this version of OS X." What?? I feel tricked and panicky. What can I do?

I just got a brand new iMac '09 with. I love it already but the only problem I seem to be having is iDVD. I got a movie that is about 700 MB, and would like to burn it onto DVD. First iDVD was saying its too large for the 4.2 GB DVD, so I selected high quality instead of previously selected Best Performance. That fit the movie onto the DVD. Once the encoding was done, I burned it. However now, when I play in on my DVD player, there is no video (green screen) and sound is all scrambled. Same thing when I play in on the iMac. I then noticed that already on the preview menu (under media) the movie is played with no video and damaged audio. Also, when it was finished burning on the dvd, iDVD kept asking for blank recordable DVDs to be inserted, which after two ruined dvds I cancelled.

As you can see, there are a bunch of Apps that I have completely lost. I did nothing - at one moment they were there, and then a little later I open up the Apps folder to see this. When I try to click on them, they all say that I can't open the file because it may be damaged or incomplete. I haven't installed anything recently, or messed with any settings. The programs are just gone. Can anyone clue me in on to what I need to do to fix this? I just got this computer last Tuesday, so I doubt I should be having any problems.

I have a Mid 2007 MacBook (Core 2 Duo, 2.20 GHz, 2GB, OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard) and I am having a problem with iTunes. I have a fresh install and was going to sell the computer to a client when I realized that iTunes had a serious problem. Whenever I go to launch iTunes, I click on the dock icon. It bounces multiple times on the first attempt, but the program never launches by showing "iTunes" in the top menu. The little light never comes on beneath the icon either. Also note that on each attempt afterwards the icon only bounces once and then stops.

I was messing around with Audio Hijack and it was working just fine. But now it seems iTunes always starts in 32-bit mode (even without audio hijack running). Also it seems to take quite a while to open the app. If I log in as root (or via a Terminal) I can open iTunes just fine, 64-bit and it opens instantly. Also when I log out OS X hangs a while on the screen you get when he's logging you out (the blue-ish screen).

I have a Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite Ver 10.10.1. Whenever I plug in my Apple headphone it in, the iTunes automatically starts and I would like to disable the same. I am talking on FaceTime using my head phone, (I am guessing some small movements of headphone triggering this) the iTunes starts automatically and the songs start to play during the FaceTime call.
Does any one know how to disable the iTunes from not starting up automatically, whenever a Headphone is inserted into Mac. I can start iTunes whenever I want like any other application. But I just don’t want any automatic starting of iTunes, when I plug the headphone!

So I deleted the Plist files because iTunes would constantly crash when it was "processing" the TV show I was downloading after it reached 100% on the download. SO very annoying. Didn't realize deleting the Plist files also deletes all of the preferences and just about everything else except the music, video, etc. files themselves. So I have all of my iTunes files on my external hard drive where they have always been, but how do I point iTunes to it?
I vaguely remember that I have to open iTunes while holding down some key? Is that right? Which key(s) again?
